On PWEB 2.0 we had a few incarnations of quotes threads, although I cannot recall how many.

Anyways, if people like, we can separate this into threads for specific quotes, such as movie quotes, etc.

I was watching Grumpier Old Men today and these quotes were hilarious.

Jon asks Max how he will be complimenting Maria over dinner.

“Maria, there are many fish in the sea, but you are the only one I want to mount over my fireplace.”

“That’s not.............. bad.”

“You notice the sexual innuendo?”

Max getting nervous and screwing it up:

“There are many women floating in the river... but you are the only one I want to stuff and stick on my wall... over the fireplace.”

Both from Grumpier Old Men, a fine movie that shows us what a loss the deaths of Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are.

"Dad can drive. He's bound to have some classic mid-life crisis transport. Something red, shiny, shaped like a penis." - Spike, on Buffy

Anya: Will you still make me waffles when we're married?
Xander: No, I'll only make them for myself, but by California law, you will own half of them.

My prof in class-- Why is the war of 1812 the best war ever? Because it was the only war where the US got firmly beaten down, and we did it. We even burned down the whitehouse.

Prof -- "Must my goose be inspected?"
Student -- "Is that a euphemism?"

Same prof: "Remember that a mushroom is basically athlete's foot in poop soup"

My favorite Dead Like Me quote. From Delores Herbig, talking to the main character George, who has moved in temporarily in order to have a place to keep her dog.

"Heaven knows, I've taken in my share of drifters. Shame about the homeless. Desperate, passionate lovers, but they will rob you blind."

(It's funniest if you know the series and can mentally hear Delores saying it!)

the last few stanzas of Carol Ann Duffy's poem, Little Red Cap. which i am obsessed with.

I clung til dawn to his thrashing fur, for
what little girl doesn't dearly love a wolf?
The I slid from between his heavy matted paws
and went in search of a living bird--white dove--

which flew, straight, from my hands to his open mouth.
One bite, dead. How nice, breakfast in bed, he said,
licking his chops. As soon as he slept, I crept to the back
of the lair, where a whole wall was crimson, gold, aglow with books.
Words, words were truly alive on the tongue, in the head,
warm, beating, frantic, winged; music and blood.

But then I was young--and it took ten years
in the woods to tell that a mushroom
stoppers the mouth of a buried corpse, that birds
are the uttered thought of trees, that a greying wolf
howls the same old song at the moon, year in, year out,
season after season, same rhyme, same reason. I took an axe

to a willow to see how it wept. I took an axe to a salmon
to see how it leapt. I took an axe to the wolf
as he slept, one chop, scrotum to throat, and saw
the glistening, virgin white of my grandmother's bones.
I filled his old belly with stones. I stitched him up.
Out of the forest I come with my flowers, singing, all alone.

Wow. I like that one too, Val. And I'm not a huge poetry guy (although I'm a fan of Helena Bell... you should google her poems at Southern Gothic ... you may like them).

I posted the whole thing on my LJ, but I love the wedding vows in Dragonlance's Dragons of Winter's Night.
The reprise is good, too.

But you and I, through burning plains,
through darkness of the earth,
affirm the world, its people,
the heavens that gave them birth
the breath that passes between us,
this new home where we stand
and all those things made larger by
the vows between woman and man.

One of my favourite poems, a classic by William Carlos Williams

This is just to say

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold

I love Pweb. The only place I can find Firefly and Dead Like Me fans.

Jan, that poem is one of my mother's favorites, too.

(had to find this online. might not be 100% accurate).

Kaufman: There was this time in high school. I was watching you out the library window. You were talking to Sarah Marsh.
Donald: Oh, God. I was so in love with her.
Kaufman: I know. And you were flirting with her. And she was really sweet to you.
Donald: I remember that.
Kaufman: Then when you walked away, she started making fun of you with Kim Canetti. It was like they were laughing at me. You didn’t know at all. You seemed so happy.
Donald: I knew. I heard them.
Kaufman: How come you looked so happy?
Donald: I loved Sarah, Charles. It was mine, that love. I owned it. Even Sarah didn’t have the right to take it away. I can love whoever I want.
Kaufman: She thought you were pathetic.
Donald: That was her business, not mine. You are what you love, not what loves you. That’s what I decided a long time ago.

-Adaptation.

"Enlightenment better damn well be worth it. -'98"

A scribbling on a toilet stall wall in my high school, that was unfortunately painted over a year later. I found out later that this was actually scribbled in by my best friends older brother, who stated it after a rough experience and a couple of drinks, and thought it was cool enough for a bathroom stall. Many times when I ask myself if life it worth it, I fall back to that quote. It cheers me up.

This is one of my favorite quotes from The Little Prince.

"For millions of years flowers have been producing thorns. For millions of years sheep have been eating them all the same. And it's not serious, trying to understand why flowers go to such trouble produce thorns that are good for nothing? It's not important, the war between the sheep and the flowers?... Suppose I happen to know a unique flower, one that exists nowhere in the world except on my planet, one that a little sheep can wipe out in a single bite one morning, just like that, even without realizing what he's doing - that isn't important? If someone loves a flower of which just one example exists among all the millions and millions of stars, that's enough to make him happy when he looks at the stars. He tells himself, 'My flower's up there somewhere...' But if the sheep eats the flower, then for him it's as if, suddenly, all the stars went out. And that isn't important?'"

THANK YOU. This was a pet peeve of mine before. So many people had been quoting random statements that were random to begin with. That's not out of context... it's just dumb.

"Here is how Aquainas sets up his arguments. First he asks a question and answers it as someone of his times might. Then he responds with his own answer and reason. For example: Is the Earth flat? Yes, for people do not fall off. However, I say no, for Augustine says, 'Verily, the Earth is round!'"
