if only, if only
the woodpecker sighs
the bark on this tree were as soft as the skies
while the wolf waits below
hungry and lonely
crying to the moon
if only, if only

if only, if only
the moon speaks no reply
reflecting the sun and all that's gone by
be strong my weary wolf
turn around boldly
fly high, my baby bird
my angel, my only

There's a sequel? I'm ashamed that I didn't know that. Holes is an excellent book, and the movie wasn't half bad.
I used to hate gravity because it would not let me fly. Now I realize it is gravity that lets me stand.

While I was shot-clocking a basketball game today, a coach was yelling,

"Make the other team work for the ball! Make them work for it! Make them WOOOOORK!

...or just give it to them, whatever they want."
If you ever find yourself reading a book entitled The Bible, you will find yourself reading the story of Adam and Eve, whose daring lives led them to put on clothing for the first time to escape from the snake infested garden in which they were living.

Jesse: Maybe what I'm saying is, is the world might be evolving the way a person evolves. Right? Like, I mean, me for example. Am I getting worse? Am I improving? I don't know. When I was younger, I was healthier, but I was, uh, whacked with insecurity, you know? Now I'm older and my problems are deeper, but I'm more equipped to handle them.

First one is from Evil Dead 2, the rest are from Army of Darkness.

Hail to the King, baby.
*bangs head on desk*

I just recently watched Army of Darkness, for embarrassing reasons (like... theguyi'mkindastalkingdresseduplikethatforhalloween... ). That is one effed-up movie.

Anyway... making with the quotes...

from henceforth i refuse to be apologetic for posting overly-much in this forum.

quote-hunting is a hobby of mine, and i don't have a paper journal to stack 'em all in, so this is a nice way to keep them all together. plus many of them are from truly amazing sources; you can only benefit from exposure.

"She had one of those virginal faces in which sincerity and affability are both clearly visible through the delicate features of Love and all the Graces... lovely blond hair rippling down to her waist, big blue eyes suffused with tenderness and modesty, a slender, supple and delicate figure, skin like a lily and fresh as a rose, posessing many talents and a vivid but somewhat wistful imagination, with some of that gentle melancholy which leads one to love books and solitude--all attributes which nature seems to grant only to the individuals for whom it is keeping unhappiness in store, as if to make that happiness seem less bitter when they encounter it, imbuing them at such times with a sombre and affecting voluptuousness and making them prefer tears to the frivolous joys of happiness, which are much less powerful and much less intense."

for Kirsten, as she's got it in my head, now:

Jack. How can you sit there, calmly eating muffins when we are in this horrible trouble, I cant make out. You seem to me to be perfectly heartless.

Algernon. Well, I cant eat muffins in an agitated manner. The butter would probably get on my cuffs. One should always eat muffins quite calmly. It is the only way to eat them.

Jack. I say its perfectly heartless your eating muffins at all, under the circumstances.

Algernon. When I am in trouble, eating is the only thing that consoles me. Indeed, when I am in really great trouble, as any one who knows me intimately will tell you, I refuse everything except food and drink. At the present moment I am eating muffins because I am unhappy. Besides, I am particularly fond of muffins. [Rising.]

Jack. [Rising.] Well, that is no reason why you should eat them all in that greedy way. [Takes muffins from Algernon.]

Algernon. [Offering tea-cake.] I wish you would have tea-cake instead. I dont like tea-cake.

Jack. Good heavens! I suppose a man may eat his own muffins in his own garden.

Algernon. But you have just said it was perfectly heartless to eat muffins.

Jack. I said it was perfectly heartless of you, under the circumstances. That is a very different thing.

Algernon. That may be. But the muffins are the same. [He seizes the muffin-dish from Jack.]

the poetry that i appreciate is highly select.

however: e.e. cummings pretty much just squats in my soul while i'm sleeping and then hustles out at day break and writes down all my secrets sans punctuation.

i.e.

since feeling is first
who pays any attention
to the syntax of things
will never wholly kiss you;

wholly to be a fool
while Spring is in the world

my blood approves,
and kisses are a far better fate
than wisdom
lady i swear by all flowers. Don't cry
--the best gesture of my brain is less than
your eyelids' flutter which says

we are for each other: then
laughleaning back in my arms
for life's not a paragraph

And death i think is no parenthesis
you snooze, you lose
well I have snozzed and lost
I'm pushing through
I'll disregard the cost
I hear the bells
so fascinating and
I'll slug it out
I'm sick of waiting

One day, Old Witch, the head witch of all the witches, was banished. Amy, just an ordinary real girl, not a witch, said Old Witch would have to go away. So, Old Witch had to go. Instead of living in the briers and the brambles, the caves and the heaths, instead of flying around on her broomstick wherever she wanted, chanting runes, doing abracadabras, casting spells and burly-burlies, this great-great (multiply the "great" by about one hundred and you have some idea of how old she was) old grandmother Old Witch had to go and live on the top of an awful, high, lonely, bare, bleak, and barren glass hill! And at first, she had to live in the witch house up on that hill all alone because at first there was no witch family--there was just herself.

The opening of my favorite book ever in the world (for reasons i don't even think i could defend or explain) The Witch Family by Eleanor Estes

The creature laughed, scornfully. "I," it said, "am afraid of nothing."
"Nothing?"
"Nothing," it said.
Charlie said, "Are you extremely frightened of nothing?"
"Absolutely terrified of it," admitted the Dragon.
"You know," said Charlie, "I have nothing in my pockets. Would you like to see it?"
"No," said the Dragon, uncomfortably, "I most definitiely would not."
There was a flapping of wings like sails, and Charlie was alone on the beach. "That," he said, "was much too easy."

"There are four simple ways for the observant to tell Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar apart: first, Mr. Vandemar is two and a half heads taller than Mr. Croup; second, Mr. Croup has eyes of a faded china blue, while Mr. Vandemar's eyes are brown; third, while Mr. Vandemar fashioned the rings he wears on his right hand out of the skulls of four ravens, Mr. Croup has no obvious jewelery; fourth, Mr. Croup likes words, while Mr. Vandemar is always hungry. Also, they look nothing at all alike."

(Basic Translation)
Glory!

One indomitable heart, Brothers all.
We, the wrath of Mandalore, Brothers all.
And glory, eternal glory,
We shall bear its weight together.
Forged like the saber in the fires of death, Brothers all.

One indomitable heart, Brothers all.
We, the wrath of Mandalore, Brothers all.

And...

Those who stand before us light the night sky in flame.
Our vengeance burns brighter still.
Every last traitorous soul shall kneel.

Those who stand before us light the night sky in flame.
Our vengeance burns brighter still.
Every last traitorous soul shall fall.

Forged like the saber in the fires of death, Brothers all!

Taking advantage of the propitious moment, Meg slipped away and ran down to greet her husband with a smiling face and the little blue bow in her hair which was his especial admiration. He saw it at once and said with pleased surprise, "Why, little mother, how gay we are tonight. Do you expect company?"

"Only you, dear. No, I'm tired of being dowdy, so I dressed up as a change. You always make yourself nice for table, no matter how tired you are, so why shouldn't I when I have the time?"

"I do it out of respect for you, my dear," said old-fashioned John.

"Ditto, ditto, Mr. Brooke," laughed Meg, looking young and pretty again, as she nodded to him over the teapot.

The October night comes down; returning as before
Except for a slight sensation of being ill at ease
I mount the stairs and turn the handle of the door
And feel as if I had mounted on my hands and knees.
"And so you are going abroad; and when do you return?
But that’s a useless question.
You hardly know when you are coming back,
You will find so much to learn.”
My smile falls heavily among the bric-à-brac.

“Perhaps you can write to me.”
My self-possession flares up for a second;
This is as I had reckoned.
“I have been wondering frequently of late
(But our beginnings never know our ends!)
Why we have not developed into friends.”
I feel like one who smiles, and turning shall remark
Suddenly, his expression in a glass.
My self-possession gutters; we are really in the dark.

"For everybody said so, all our friends,
They all were sure our feelings would relate
So closely! I myself can hardly understand.
We must leave it now to fate.
You will write, at any rate.
Perhaps it is not too late.
I shall sit here, serving tea to friends.”

From Portrait of a Lady by T.S. Eliot

I do so love this portion of the poem.
There's another home somewhere,
There's another glimpse of sky...
There's another way to lean
into the wind, unafraid.
There's another life out there...

-Catcher in the Rye, JD Salinger

I'm sick of waiting
and I can
