"Peggy-O" by the Grateful Dead. It's an old Scottish folksong, originally "The Bonnie Lass o' Fyvie". I love the old folksong so much better, but I'll settle for the only recording I could ever find, from a bootlegged live Grateful Dead concert. But here's a question:

It's an old Scottish folksong. It's about a "troop of Irish dragoons." What's with that? I guess there are folksongs that we know about other countries, but normally they are, you know, folksongs from those countries. Unless they're derogatory in some manner... so maybe the song isn't supposed to be heroic and iconic like I've always pictured it, but is, in fact, about how bad the Irish army was. One guy deserts his troop for his love, his officer shoots him out of anger, and they all march on without his body.

Anyway. Good song.

Breaking by Anberlin.

Do you memorize theatrical lines
that seem to lead them in
Play the role with the good girl heart
hide the tangled webs within
Who was it that led you on
that makes you want to hurt me so
Who do you want to forget
who forgot you long ago

Do you still feel him
calling in the air tonight?
Do you still feel it
Seems like you've done this before
You make breaking hearts look so easy
Seems like you've done this before
You've got breaking hearts all but down
and you've done this, you've done this before
You make stealing hearts look so easy
Where is the girl I adore?
You've got breaking up all but down
and I can't love a thief anymore

Do you collect the souls you've lost
in the top of your dresser drawer
Count the number of tears displaced
on lonely bedroom floors
Now the shape where your heart once was
slowly takes the place of you
Will they hold the memories now
of the love I thought I knew

Do you still feel him
calling in the air tonight?
Do you still feel it
Seems like you've done this before
You make breaking hearts look so easy
Seems like you've done this before
You've got breaking hearts all but down
And you've done this, you've done this before
You make stealing hearts look so easy
Where is the girl I adore?
You've got breaking up all but down
and I can't love a thief anymore

You make breaking hearts look so easy
You've got breaking hearts all but down
You make breaking hearts look so easy
Seems like you've done this before
You've got breaking hearts all but down
And you've done this, you've done this before

The best you could hope to be is,
Now just a bitter sweet memory
And you make breaking hearts look so easy

I must have listened to Lynzie Kent's cover of Use Somebody by Kings of Leon at least a hundred times since being linked to it this morning. I LOVED the original anyway, but this cover destroyed me.

By complete coincidence, I got a Kings of Leon album the other day. It was on my "stuff to get" list, I don't know why, and I have yet to listen to it. Maybe you even recommended it at some point! Now I shall be sure to listen to it.

Weird. I listened to that song Kelly linked (about 12 times so far...) and when I walked to the kitchen, my brother was playing the original, Kings of Leon version, having no idea that I was just listening to the Kent version. I did a double take and then asked if he had heard me listening to this one but he hadn't; he was looking for the ringtone.

I'm listening to Come On Get Higher right now on my phone. I love that song! It's just so sweet.

And earlier, I had Kiss Me Thru the Phone (I love that song!!!!)on repeat for like 15 minutes, but I finally got tired of it. Well, I didn't get tired of it, I just wanted to listen to my other music.

Um, COGH just finished, and it is Right Round (another awesome song. Flo Rida is great).

Always - Newsboys
(probably my second fave song of their music and I just found a live version (which is how I first heard it, as a haunting encore song before the album it was from was released)) I think I like the album version better than this newer version, but still a great song.

What were you thinking?
I got a right to ask.
Is there a reason
other than your past?
A great pretender.
Why was i the last
to see through your skin?
Is there a chance
you'll ever change?
It's always the same.
You're always to blame.
Is there any way around this?
I can't see.
You walked out on her.
You planned to be free.
I'm trying not to point the finger,
but it's killing me.
What were you thinking?
Were you thinking of me?
Did you see what they wrote
on the family tree?
I know it's over.
All in the past.
I need to forgive you
if i'm to last.
Will i ever change?
It's always the same.
You're always to blame.
Is there any way around this?
I can't see.
You walked out on her.
You planned to be free.
I'm trying not to point the finger,
but it's killing me.
Take these pieces
thrown away
put them together from
night 'n' day
washed by the sun
dried by the rain
to be my father
in the fatherless days
So, Lone Star, now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb.

Mr. Pitiful by Matt Costa.

Those new iPhone commercials made me go on a Matt Costa binge, the first in about a year. I mostly like this song for the one line "If you don't like the movie then quit acting," but it has a great tune and catchy melody, and it's a tribute to it that one of my roommates last year spent about a month playing it over and over again on his piano, learning it the only way he learns songs, and I still like it.

Cascada's "Evacuate the Dancefloor."

Something about it reminds me of Girls Just Want To Have Fun, "Dancing In Heaven (Orbital Bebop)" most specifically, I think, and it makes me a little too giddy whenever it comes on.

First Train Home by Imogene Heap

Come Home by One Republic featuring Sara Bareilles

But mostly Sometimes I Rhyme Slow, Sometimes I Rhyme Quick by Nice & Smooth.

The first time I ever heard this song was the day that David and I decided, really and officially decided to move to Minnesota together. We had recently watched the movie THE WACKNESS and so Pandora was set to A Tribal Quest station with lots of 90's hip hop. We were sitting together on his mustard colored couch that faces the one and only window in his tiny studio apartment in Queens. My head was on his shoulder. His arm around me. We were holding hands. We sat in complete silence and let the weight of our decision fill the room. It was late afternoon and the sun was sinking, filling the whole room with a golden-orange glow. His body felt warm and solid against mine. The first notes of "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman floated out of the speakers, and before I had time to wonder about it I realized it was being sampled for this hip hop song. And although the lyrics don't line up at all, are not lyrics I can apply to my life at all in any way, this song, the FEELING of this song embodies so perfectly how bitter-sweetly sad and joyous I feel about leaving New York City, which became a home to me in such an unexpected way. The city that taught me to be an adult. This song fills me with so so much nostalgia for a time and place in my life that I haven't even left yet.

I cannot cannot cannot stop listening to it.

Banana Man by Tally Hall

Do you want a banana?
Peel it down and go mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm
Do you want a banana?
This banana for you! (cha cha cha)

My friend listened to this song every day during our last year of high school, while he ate his banana. One day he forgot his banana and screamed a scream reminiscent of Cameron's from Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The entire school heard it, prompting a call on the intercom. "Is that Andrew?"

I love this song.

people can say what they want about the show or Brendon Small's vocals. but he has channeled the ultimate metal guitar. Can definitely hear all the Queen rip-offs, but i do the same thing as much as i can so i can't complain. really enjoy the whole album as background music, but the songs that really stick out in my mind are duncan hills coffee jingle, thunderhorse, go into the water, murdertrain a comin', and kill you.

FOB made its way out, specifically "Tell That Mick He Just Made My List of Things To Do Today."

When I'm less angry, more mopey later, I'll put on "See, I'm Smiling" and tomorrow, when my mom is at work, I'll make my dog cry by belting it.

And then to regain my anger and sense of self-worth, Beyonce's "Irreplaceable."

someone gave me a nickel creek song, and many of the songs were impressive, but the one that the songwriting stood out head and shoulders as all time great insane songwriting was the second to last track, "Tomorrow is a Long Time" I played it about five times straight, so impressive. Then I went and googled it. Heh. it's a cover of a Dylan song.

it's also been covered by Elvis, Odetta, the Kingston Trio, Rod Stewart and many more

the lyrics are phenomenal, and I kinda like Nickel Creek and Dylan's versions best from what I've listened to:

If today was not an endless highway
If tonight was not a crooked trail
If tomorrow wasn't such a long time
Then lonesome would mean nothing to me at all

Yes, and only if my own true love was waiting
If I could hear his heart softly pounding
Yes, and only if he was lying by me
Would I lie in my bed once again

I can't see my reflection in the waters
I can't speak the sounds that show no pain
I can't hear the echo of my footsteps
Or remember the sound of my own name

Yes, and only if my own true love was waiting
If I could hear his heart softly pounding
Yes, and only if he was lying by me
Would I lie in my bed once again

There's beauty in that silver singing river
There's beauty in that sunrise in the sky
But none of these and nothing else can touch the beauty
That I remember in my true love's eyes

Yes, and only if my own true love was waiting
If I could hear his heart softly pounding
Yes, and only if he was lying by me
Would I lie in my bed once again

the song is also a masterclass in how to update an older song for a contemporary sound, brilliant work by Nickel Creek giving it a current spin--it's the sort of thing that escapes most Idol contestants but which is essential to success on the show.

Pweb, I need your help and ASAP! I need to create three playlists for my trip next month and I'm not sure I have the music necessary for them.

I would like:

1) Calm, soothing, happy, relaxed music of a "I'm happy to be alive" sort, as in it makes you feel that way versus out and out saying that.

2) Energetic, bouncy, happy music of the same nature as stated above.

3) Err, scratch the third, as I forgot what I wanted for this one when I was typing the first two. :P But I'll put here: please no country.

I don't know if it fits the "happy to be alive" bill but I've been listening to this playlist lately. It always makes me happy for some reason:

1. Her Morning Elegance - Oren Lavie
2. Mad World - Gary Jules

3. Older Chests - Damien Rice
4. All Good Things (Come to an End) - Nelly Furtado
5. I Will Follow You Into the Dark - Deathcab for Cutie
6. Have You Forgotten - Red House Painters
7. She's My Ride Home - Blue October
8. Duncan - Paul Smith
9. Sweetness Follows - REM
10. Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol
11. World - Five for Fighting
12. Crash Into Me - Dave Matthews Band
13. It's Just Me - Blue October
14. In God's Hands - Nelly Furtado

I like you. My favorites are in bold.

I'm going to start off by saying thank you, seriously, because I'm much too much of a wuss to share music easily myself. I'll also add that I did enjoy the snippets I heard and will likely seek these out later.

But

lyons24000 wrote:I don't know if it fits the "happy to be alive" bill

Not at all for most of them. I know I said the lyrics didn't need to explicitly say "happy to be alive" and I did ask for calm, but some of those songs are flat out bitter-sweet to depressing. I also don't want songs that are so obviously about being in love with someone; if they can be twisted into a generic sort of love of life or friends or anything not a romantic interest, then they're okay.

Maybe I should search instead of asking for suggestions. I feel bad saying it's not quite what I'm looking for but...it's not quite what I'm looking for.

I find that Ben Lee's music makes me happy to be alive. He isn't the best singer in the world, but the music is bouncy and happy. For a sample, test "Catch My Disease". Also Hellogoodbye makes me very happy. Let's see... The Elected, just calm happy music, "Someday" and "Girl in the Sea" by No More Kings, most of Stunt by Barenaked Ladies makes me happy, Fire Escape by Fastball, and any cover of "I Melt With You" by Modern English.

Those are my suggestions, with bands bolded for easy reading!

And Jeff, well done! "Catch My Disease" is exactly the kind of bouncy-happy I was hoping for; I got visions in my head of bopping around with a Chai in hand. Also loved "Someday." I'll be looking into the other stuff you suggested.

Awesome! There's nothing like having your taste in music reaffirmed by someone who obviously has good taste. For specifics on The Elected I suggest trying "Biggest Star," and for Hellogoodbye try "Oh, It is Love" (slow then building), "Baby It's Fact" (bouncy happy), and "Here (In Your Arms)" (slow versus and bouncy choruses).

WHY did no one think to tell me about James Morrison (not to be confused with Jim Morrison of the Doors) sooner?!

I stumbled upon him, quite by accident, last night. He is amazing. I've been listening to his album "Songs For You, Truths For Me" all day and part of last night.

Okay, I don't normally check this thread, but I need serious help.

Please, please, please someone(s), I need new workout music desperately. Very little of the music I listen to is good for this. At all. Motivational and with a good beat. Please.

That's a hard combo. I find good techno makes good workout music, but it's hard to find "motivational" techno. Look up cyborgjeff's album "Just a Smile"

For less-electronicy goodness, lookup Taller Children by Elizabeth & The Catapult Airstream Driver by Gomez. Trolley Wood, Invasion, and Plenty of Paper by Eisley. Also, Gaelic Storm in general is pretty fantastically upbeat and fun.

Alea: I realize your plea was a couple weeks ago, but cyborgjeff might fit the bill there too.
