Help Yebra Plan His Trip!

Postby Yebra » Mon Aug 27, 2007 1:58 pm

So I'm taking a gap year before going to uni and I'm thinking about going travelling for a little while next spring or summer. I'm thinking either round Europe or the US and I'm leaning towards the US because of the language and the wonderful exchange rate we have going at the moment, but I'm not set yet.

Of course, I know NOTHING about this and haven't begun to look into it. So pwebbers, help me out! Any ideas on what I should do, where I should see, how I can get around spending as little as possible and so forth?

Are there any areas of the States or Canada that you particularly want to see? Overall it's a pretty big place and you will probably stick to a few general areas, neh?

Not particularly, that's why I'm asking for suggestions. But yeah, a few general areas make sense, I suspect hanging loosely around the East Coast would be an idea, although that's all I've ever seen so darting out of that might be interesting. I'd love to see some of Canada, but have no idea how practical that is.

Quebec City. Or Toronto. Depending on how good your French is. Or perhaps Montreal, which is in Quebec as well but easier to traverse in English.

Well I just got back from a 5 1/2 week road trip round America a few weeks ago. Our big stops were in Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana (New Orleans is awesome -- especially seeing the godly and ungodly side of the city), Texas, New Mexico, Arizona (Grand Canyon + Zion Nat. park), Utah (Bryce Canyon!!!), Nevada (I didn't like Vegas, but I'm glad I went so I can say I didn't like it), California (LA is cool, there's this little town above San Diego called Encinitas --a sweet little surf town totally undiscovered by tourists -- that we loved and it's the palced we stayed the longest, and we went to San Francisco, where I would have loved to stay for much longer than 2 days), Yosemite, Redwoods, Oregon (Portland!!), Washington (Seattle we didn't get much tiem in but it sure looked nifty), Montana (Yellowstone of course), and 40 hours straight back to South Carolina, Georgia again, and Florida. Whew.

I strongly recommend hitting up the west coast and the bordering states. Beautiful, amazing, fun, and diverse (but I grew up on the east coast so I've got that cultural tolerance). Also see if you can't find people to stay with. Everyone will want to show you a good tiem in their home town, so you might get pampered, or at least a couch instead of paying for a hotel.

If you have any specific questions about a place I went to, I can give my best answer. The only big thing I might have done differently is go less places in 5 1/2 or I REALLY wanted to give myself more time in general for the trip.

Also, I'll be going to Europe for three months... I leave in 8 days, so I'll let you know about that.
It is not the sound of victory;
it is not the sound of defeat;
it is the sound of singing that I hear.

If you're on the East Coast you're not too far from Niagara Falls. The falls themselves are beautiful (Especially from the Canadian side), just stay away from all the touristy crap up the hill. Maid of the Mist or Cave of the Winds are both good.

The American experience can be summed up in two pieces, one short and overwhelming, the other long and overwhelming. The first would be New York City in general. The second would be a road trip all around the states. That is long, exhausting, amazingly interesting and unforgettable.

Come to North Dakota.

When you return to your real life, it will seem like a vacation in comparison.

:D

(I love my state. I do. But I am the only person I know who ever spent childhood vacations here on purpose and in retrospect, I think that a trip to Boston or Montreal or, hell, even Disneyland for just one summer wouldn't have killed us.)
There's another home somewhere,
There's another glimpse of sky...
There's another way to lean
into the wind, unafraid.
There's another life out there...

I'd tell you to come see Seattle, but that's almost as far west as you can go.

The west really is about as beautiful as it gets, though. Especially the lower mainland of BC, or Vancouver Island.

If it's next summer, I've invited some Pwebbers to come out here and a few have actually said they most likely will. Depending on who shows, we might do a mini-road trip around AZ (Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, Phoenix, Tucson) and head to San Diego, time depending. It's looking like it'll be the last week in June.

You are more than welcome to head this way if you so desire. You'd have a place to stay for free in Phoenix and my hometown. The others would require some money if they were overnight trips.

Wowza, you mean the good stuff isn't all in the same place? Whose lousy idea was that?

Alea that sounds great! Any idea on when you're planning that? As far as I'm concerned I have no time commitments so it makes sense to plan around that.

That's two endorsements for Boston I've heard now, so that's gotta be in. I'd love to go to New York again and most of my non-pweb Americans are scattered round that area so that makes a fair deal of sense.

I saw Niagara Falls last year on a school exchange but I like the idea of going further into Canada. Montreal sounds fun, might have a look into that.

Given that car rental is probably out of the question for me, are there any more economical ways of travelling vast distance than by air? What are the train links like?

Well, if you're traveling long distances you could do bus or train. I'm not really familiar with anything else enough to recommend them.

Sadly, the trains in the US suck and the busses aren't too much better.

Thirded.

Two years ago, I went to the first time to the U.S., and was on a tour on basically the east coast for 3.5 weeks, that might be a good start: Like stated before, I travelled to Niagara Falls (Canadian side better..oh, and I almost got arrested there, but that's a different story), the Hershie's factory (an actually really fun tour, and you gotta love those big boxes of Hershie "kisses" you can buy on the way back), a quick trip to the Amish country, some Washington DC., NYC for a week, Disneyworld for 5 days (I still miss Orlando T_T) and more. (I also intended to go to New Orleans, but a month before I had to go, Katrina came along..-_-)
You could do that (minus whatever you like) then go on a tour to the west coast, though I have no idea what you'll find there. But I highly recommend the east coast and Canadian Niagara Falls =)\

And, if you're bored and want to see the world's most beautiful girls (and boys) and have a lot of money...COME TO ISRAEL! ^___^

From what I hear, the trains in the States are better than in Canada. ViaRail is a small fortune to ride. Although for shorter distances, the GO system from Toronto to a few of the surrounding cities is pretty good. I don't really know where it all goes, though.

...em remember? You were going on about how he had a lot of good ideas and some of the things he did were pretty reasonable "if you think about it" and then you said his moustache was cool too (which was totally out of order, moustaches aren't cool).

I must agree. Although, General Burnside had quite a neat one.
