Alea that sounds great! Any idea on when you're planning that? As far as I'm concerned I have no time commitments so it makes sense to plan around that.
When I'm hammering out the details, or when it's supposed to take place? Not sure for the first part, but it's been narrowed down from my first invitation of 'some point in the summer' to 'either the 3rd or 4th week of June, or the 2nd week of July.' So far I have three that are most likely definite shows and two maybes. Three maybes if I count you.

I welcome any other Pwebbers to come to AZ for a gathering next summer, though there'd likely be hotels involved because I can only house so many and it's not even something I can provide everywhere for the ones I have personally invited.

Yeah. That's all.

ETA: I'm not sure what you're interested in doing, Alex, but my basic plans -more specifically than driving around the state- if the interest is there were to visit the Grand Canyon, Sedona (gorgeous, I hear), Flagstaff, Tucson (for hiking and the Saguaro National Park), and San Diego, CA (for the beaches, possibly Sea World).

Postby Yebra » Fri May 09, 2008 6:28 am

Ah, I knew I had a thread for this. Long story short, I'm starting out in a few weeks! This both makes me excited and wish I'd developed better long term planning at some point.

I've got my first few weeks planned out which take me through Toronto, Ottawa, Boston, New York(lodging with the lovely duck-girl) and Philadelphia. Anyone in those places who wants to hear my cool british accent (or my barely passable irish one) give me a yell.

Then I'm flying west to see the ewok-ish one(who is AWESOME), and working my way up the coast to Vancouver. That leg is less planned out at present, I know I want to visit San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle on my way up (and a few more I haven't decided on yet), but anyone who wants to throw ideas of places I might not of thought of (or those I have thought of but haven't yet been told of how crazy-awesome they are) please do.

Yay for Boston and New York!

If you have any free time during your stay in the city, give me a call!
you snooze, you lose
well I have snozzed and lost
I'm pushing through
I'll disregard the cost
I hear the bells
so fascinating and
I'll slug it out
I'm sick of waiting
and I can
hear the bells are
ringing joyful and triumphant

Please tell me you've worked Chicago in there somewhere, anywhere? Because silly me, I just sort of assumed you did.

I love that city more than just about anywhere and it's my opinion that it's the best place in all of the midwest (not that it counts for much, seeing as I've only ever been to MN, parts of Wisconsin and parts of Iowa).

Michael...back me up here.

Ok, need advice. Either I can visit San Diego or Sacramento. The uncertainty comes from the fact all coaches to San Diego are going through LA first, which I'd then be visiting afterward, whilst going to Sacramento cuts off time from the ungodly long trip to Seattle.

So purely from a critical path approach to this I should go to Sacramento, but that's possible not the best way to plan a trip.

Expert opinions? Normal opinions?

There's the Phoenix -> L.A. -> San Diego route, to be sure, but have you looked into the Phoenix -> Yuma,AZ -> El Centro,CA -> San Diego route? There should be a way to do that, but it may involve buying two tickets (Phoenix -> Yuma, Yuma -> San Diego), which may be more money and time than you're willing to spend.

If that seems like too much work, I say just go to Sacramento. San Diego is gorgeous in places and I've never been far enough north in CA to make it to Sacramento, but I hear it's nice and can't see you missing anything major by cutting S.D. out. CA has pretty beaches and great weather elsewhere, and the only other thing I like doing in S.D. that doesn't involve concerts or sporting events is going to Balboa Park (museums, Spanish mission, Old Towne, San Diego zoo).

Hope that helps.

I had a look at the other route but it was a little problematic. I think I might just go with visiting somewhere else up north or staying a little longer in each place. Ahh, choices.I should learn how to make them.

Poo. Okay... number one rule of meetups. You must have photographic evidence of the meeting. Especially when it's a girl I haven't seen or heard from in years. :P

Pfft, I was too busy meeting up with a girl I hadn't seen in years to take photos for your benefit :-p

Also I <3 boston subways, waay better public transit than ottawa buses.

I think I left a sandal in Ottawa. Which annoys..

I <3 boston subways

I miss the T sooooo much. Granted the subways here are much...newer and less likely to...crash. But oh, how I miss the green and blue lines!!!!

I'm afraid I'm a terrible disappointment. Lack of sleep on buses has made me an uninteresting tourist today.

In truth I arrived about 6 (boarder crossings remain creepy, having my finger prints taken underneath a portrait of George Bush is a strange experience), dumped my bag, sat in South Station and hammered out a few pages of a story idea I'd had the night before (I suspect the lack of sleep might make it mostly unusable but hey). Went checked into a hostel, entered into a no mans land where i both couldn't use a room or the facilities yet, yet couldn't explore town. Then once I was finally set up, I just went and wondered round the north end for a bit. Watched some boats, wandered round some of the history stuff. Went back to the hostel and crashed out for a bit. And here I am.

Whilst I can't actually say I've 'done' much, I do really like the feel of the place, I'm a sucker for nice seafronts and quality public transport. I don't know if it's the tickets making me feel like a better version of the oyster cards back home, the sheer contrast to the hour waiting for that frikkin' vital bus yesterday, or the doors that move like the ones in star trek, but I really like the subway.

Otherwise I'm just being a horrible disappointment to a native. I'll go be quiet now.

Good god, it is NOT always sunny in Philadelphia.

The downside to using celestial navigation to work out north is it goes out the window when the sun goes away and people on the street are LOUSY at directions. So I walked about an hour more in the rain than I meant to today.

But hey, here. Will go explore tomorrow. Jani and Kelly are both super awesome as I haven't mentioned New York here yet..

So... I read that as "eww, Bay Alea." And despite the fact that I'm completely aware that that made no sense at all, I was thinking "geez, I didn't know Adam had such a thing against Alea."

Relax guys, I'm seeing them both so I can settle this. My criteria do mostly depend on easy of public transport and time it takes to connect to the hostel's wifi though.

Alea is scary.....scarily AWESOME.

ah well the bay area is better with public transit, but it is certainly much worse to drive in. Stanford is pretty though. Chinatown is fun. :p pizza at the cheeseboard in berkely is all sorts of awesome.

The Yebra is swift like the night, half zebra, half vampire, half lizard, half mathematical impossibility.

I'm leaning with liking the LA area better at the mo because it didn't involve fountaining equipment to walk up the street, but perhaps that's just because I had a local to show me the pretty bits, got taken to a neat little lookout in the woods over the city!
