I occasionally call it a "drink machine".

I occasionally call it a "drink machine".
But not a "drinks machine"?

...

For some reason I can only imagine that in a British accent.

For some reason I can only imagine saying it like Chapelle's "purple drink" in various sketches.

Most of Phoenix' population is out-of-staters; you will hardly meet a native Arizonan anymore, at least here. I was beyond annoyed to see someone from the south/midwest hasn't learned that the term is soda. At a store I went to recently, there was a sign posted to an aisle refrigerator that said something about a 'pop.'

I almost ripped it down.

Definitely the first time I've seen that (wrong) word used in this state.

Drat! Turns out that Kansas appears to be a "pop" place as well. I was hoping that I'd have a chance to unlearn this stupid habit of speech.

I grew up in Texas. It's coke here. It was weird, I went to Oklahoma recently and my aunt, cousins, grandparents, and such asked me if I wanted a pop. I blinked at them and was taken aback for a moment, but eventually got used to it that week a spent there.

I'm sad that Canada is not on there! I had no idea so many people had no word for sunshowers, and also, the shoes you might wear to gym class or during other athletics can be running shoes, runners, or trainers.

Ali, the last info graphic at that link blows my mind!

There is a DISTINCT difference between "Mary" "Merry" and "Marry."

People really pronounce all three of those words identically?! :gasp:

I have never in my life heard those words pronounced differently. I can't even think how you would.

I'm really curious as to how you pronounce them. I don't know anyone who has ever pronounced those words differently!

I pronounce them all the same, but growing up near Philly I definitely had friends who pronounced them differently.

Mary is pronounced about how you'd expect. The 'a' in 'marry' is pronounced the same as in 'bat'. Merry is either "meh-ree" or "muh-ree".

Wikipedia has a discussion of it here.

I do apparently have other parts of the Philadelphia dialect, like "hoagie", "sneakers" and "syrup" (pronounced 'seer-up').

Or maybe the fact that there is a distinct difference between the three means that the context alone is enough to show the difference, rendering changes in pronunciation unnecessary.

There is no "The City" here. Minnesota has "The Cities," which is obviously superior.

I'm just sad "roof" wasn't included.

Noticed I'd never voted in this poll. I've now voted Pop on principal, despite more often referring to it as soda.

I voted tonic, but I was being silly in doing so. I only order tonic with gin.

I don't order a soda, I order a whatever it is I want. Usually that is Dr. Pepper, sometimes it is Barq's. If there is rum, then I order coke.

Having grown up on Lawn Guyland, and later in upstate New Yawk, I hate to break it to you all, but there is only ONE "the City."

At a diner in the mid-west, once, the waitress asked me if I wanted a coke. Since I wanted a Coke, I said, "Sure!" She then asked, "What type? Orange, Root beer, 7up, etc.?"

I was on a short road trip with a college friend (now my brother in law) and we went through the drive through for dinner. I was driving, and he had me order him a combo meal. When she asked what flavor coke he wanted with it he shouted out over me, "Bunny flavored!"

The lady in the drive through didn't really understand what he said (or she may have just thought that, because who orders bunny flavored soda?) but I couldn't say anything after that because I was laughing so much. It was the first thing that popped into his mind.

Yes, somehow asking what kind of "coke" I want always makes me want to be a smart alec too - don't they REALIZE how silly it is to make me say I want a "7-up-flavored coke" or some such thing?

Although I've also been known to throw knives at people who say "ATM machine" or "I need to unloosen the nut on the bolt" or "I'll throw a piece of toast into the toaster."

Twice-toasted toast could be a thing, like a twice-baked potato or refried beans.
