Any Car People on P-Web?

Postby Mich » Tue May 29, 2007 1:12 pm

In short, my car (a '92 Subaru Loyale) is overheating.

In long (while trying to stay as short as possible):

I was driving home from college, a 6-hour drive. One hour into it, I couldn't get above 40 mph. I realized that it was overheating horribly. Three hours later, I had somehow reached a friend who gave me a ride back to town, and was on the phone with my parents, realizing I hadn't put coolant into the car for quite some time. The next day, my mom had driven up to get me and possibly haul all of my stuff out of my car back home, in case the coolant didn't fix it. It didn't; the car overheated again in a matter of minutes.

The next day, my dad and I drove BACK up to see if we could do anything about it. Nope; the coolant stayed in the car, the overheating didn't stop. So we drove to the nearest town with an autoparts store and bought a new thermostat. We replaced it in my car. Nothin' happenin'. We rented a U-Haul tow bar and towed it home.

So, my question: It is not a coolant leak. It is not the thermostat. The radiator is not clogged. A retired mechanic friend suggested the front fan clutch being bad, because, according to him, it appears to be. I'm currently working on that. But are there any other possibilities? We're pretty much flat out of ideas, and the interweb does not appear to be very helpful.

And, if you read all of that, you deserve a star, anyway!

the mechanic is probably right.

still, check your oil for foam and coolant in the oil (it'll be too thin and smell like antifreeze)

Well, replaced the fan & clutch. Still doesn't get any resistance after the car is warmed up, and still gets way too hot. Probably just going to send it to a mechanic.

And the oil's okay, but thanks for the thought, Brain. :)
