Plasma Shields

Postby Sparrowhawk » Fri Apr 27, 2007 12:35 am

http://www.newscientisttech.com/article ... news_rss20
The US Army hopes, within a few years, to deploy a plasma shield – a machine that generates a protective screen of dazzling mid-air explosions – to stun and disorient an enemy.

The device uses a technology known as dynamic pulse detonation (DPD). A short but intense laser pulse creates a ball of plasma, and a second laser pulse generates a supersonic shockwave with the plasma to generate a bright flash and a loud bang.

The Plasma Acoustic Shield System will eventually combine a dynamic pulse detonation laser with a high power speaking for hailing or warning, and a dazzler light source. PASS has already been demonstrated by the system's makers, Stellar Photonics.
But not to be outdone, in the same article:
The company has also pitched a portable laser rifle, which would be lethal, to the US Army. It would weigh about fifteen kilograms, would have a range of more than a mile, and could have numerous advantages over existing rifles – better accuracy and the ability to hit a moving target at the speed of light.

It could also be used in non-lethal mode, "offering the individual soldier a first response non-lethal alternative, with the capability to go lethal should the situation call for that level of response", says Braun.
When I read "portable laser rifle" in the article my first thought was "Covenant Sniper Rifle".

"Set the Blasters to 'stun'!"
"..."
"I said to 'stun', dammit"

Quoted from generic sci-fi movie.

That is not a laser. It's a little light bulb that blinks!

Here's something this topic made me think of:

In the Star Wars universe (forgive me OSC, GL is my first love) they have lightsabers, which can pretty much cut/melt through anything. Do you think it would be possible (yeah, in the Star Wars universe) to create a lightsaber cloak around your spacecraft? Then you could deflect all manner of intersteller artillary while punching nice little holes in Star Destroyers by ramming into them. Cool idea?

I am not sure but i believe plasma can be contained and manipulated be strong magnetic fields. The only reason nuclear fusion is not a viable power source is the energy used to contain the reaction is greater than the yield. So to make a "plasma saber" might require a very large battery.

I could be completely wrong, but i like to think im always right.

And the Beam Rifle from halo was the first thing that came to mind.

What no-one seems to realise is that lightsabers would be no-match for old-fashioned solid bullets. Even if the lightsaber melted them you would still have burning liquid metal flying at you at 500 miles an hour

"portable" 15 kg rifle... 15 KILOS! That's pretty hefty for a RIFLE! Maybe they should just call it a canon!

and besides, every rifle has a non-lethal mode; just hit 'em with the butt!

I'm not sure whacking someone upside the head with a 30 pound gun could be considered non-lethal.

I guess that's why they had to include a "non-lethal laser" mode for this model. Normal rifles don't quite weigh 30 pounds, so the whack is a little less traumatic than this beast's would be.

just wondering if they did make a light saber how would they make it stop at a sertin length if they dont think of that when or if they make one it could just be truned on and head out into nothing until the energy crystal runs out of power

that would be hilarious in my opinion:).

Not that the post has anything to do with the topic, but you've sparked my interests, so I'll say they will make a different type of Light Sabers- ones that'll have the swords stuck in them, and pressing a button will make the sword come out, whilst pressing another button afterwards will give the saber a lethal amount of electricity- and a third button would be used to return the saber to the holder.

Actually, people can build such a saber right now..

I would say "it's impossible to make a 'real' lightsabre (like in the SW movies)" but people were probably saying the same thing about "communicators" and such from Star Trek... and look now at cellphones. So, perhaps YOU will be the one to make the leap and invent the impossible. It will take a strong knowledge of physics, however... and my present knowledge of physics would indicate that it's impossible. So first, you need to "re-invent" some parts of physics. (Of course, that also happens every day...so much for the 'absoluteness' of science.)
