i beat the original legend of zelda on my DS today.
now I want to try to do it without dying once, I died 29 times this time through.
after about five tries, I got the bombs, the first two heart containers, the blue candle and the white sword all before entering the first dungeon before dying. It is extremely difficult to stay alive in the overworld when you have few hearts and are not really going near the fairy ponds. :-p

yeah I didn't get that far. I'd only picked up one of the 100 rupees at that point. stupid zora keeps hitting me. I am getting much better at evading and killing most of the little overworld enemies without getting hit, rather than basically running through them. :-pAhh...That's why you also need to get the blue ring.after about five tries, I got the bombs, the first two heart containers, the blue candle and the white sword all before entering the first dungeon before dying. So I can do the first U down the bottom up the right and across the top to pick up the heart containers, rupees, candle and white sword, now I just need to get back across to the outskirts of the lost woods to pick up the other rupees and get over to the durn blue ring and third heart container, then I may or may not buy the magic shield and arrows before heading to the first dungeon.

The big shield is always on my list of things to do before the 1st dungeon. It is key, especially if you are having trouble with the Zoras. Arrows can wait. Though it is a good buy if you have the ruppees. Just need to get them before the fifth dungeon to take care of those damn rabbits hopping all over the place. That is really their only purpose outside of the sixth boss.
on the drive to Grandma's house I got through all 8 dungeons dieing only twice, once in the sixth dungeon and once in the 8th. then I had to deliberately die a third time to bring up the save screen. if only you could save on the GBA without dieing.
So, Lone Star, now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb.

I love the new Spirit Tracks game, a lot more than I thought I was. Like, a lot more. I was actually looking for another DS game to play on the trip to ND, couldn't find it at any store, so I "settled" for the new Zelda game that has a train. It's great. Really, really great. It's everything Phantom Hourglass had, but with more sidequests and everything DS-y streamlined. I'm loving it and actually don't want to beat it as quickly as I could, so I'm forcing myself to stop playing it every couple hours.

Far Side. While reorganizing our office, I discovered my husband's The Prehistory of The Far Side. This was the first comic I would specifically go look for in the paper and is still probably my favorite.

Having only seen La persistencia de la memoria bandied around, Salvador Dali was never of much interest to me. But I really find myself drawn to, loving, Galatea of the Spheres.

I respect Dali. Nowhere have I seen an artist who can paint my nightmares in such ways that they appear beautiful.

Nicely put. I don't know if there is personal significance that I'm unaware of (seems highly likely), but all the same, I like the way you described his work. If you care to share more on specific works, I'd be thrilled to hear. If not, that's fine, too, of course.Nowhere have I seen an artist who can paint my nightmares in such ways that they appear beautiful.

It's mostly involved with just my nightmares frightening me to the bone for no real reason. I don't know what makes dreams nightmares to other people, but whatever it is for me, it shows up in Dali's works more often than not. The most specific example is La Tentation de Saint-Antoine (or whatever the real name is, I couldn't find the exact name, but this one:
[img]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/e ... nthony.jpg
Theres that quality in there that makes it so I can't look at it for too long. Even The Persistence of Memory starts to get to me if I look at it for too long. I think it's this feeling of barely contained control, like the laws of the universe are being obeyed but are about to snap at any moment, or that they already have and you just can't tell, or something like that. It's very, very difficult to describe.

Thanks for that. I think you really hit on why Dali and other surrealists' paintings work - I mean, I don't think they're beautiful in most cases but one would have a strong case in saying that isn't their intention.I don't know what makes dreams nightmares to other people, but whatever it is for me, it shows up in Dali's works more often than not. ... It's very, very difficult to describe.
They are great at catching subconscious thoughts/ideas -or what we can presume are meant to represent the subconscious and, well, surreal quality of a dreamlike or otherworldly state- and putting them into visual representations, much the way your brain does when dreaming. So, as I said before, I think you put it quite nicely.

That last link was pretty funny.
I love that although I'm quick to shoot off my mouth without thinking things through, making me wrong quite often and embarrassed equally often, I have the ability to mull over the opposing argument, change my mind when I know I'm wrong, and admit as much.

I just saw the last episode of There Will Be Brawl. I enjoyed it, though I find it a bit confusing at the end. I forgive Mr. Mercer for delay on the last episode; heard he nearly freaking killed himself trying to do the editing.
I also liked that I heard that in their forums, there were lots of "I think X did it!" threads (the series is a whodunit, sorta), and not one of them got it right. Although it can be nice to have something where it's possible to deduce the mystery using hinted at clues... I dunno, it was cool having something coming that really is pretty much impossible to determine beforehand.

I love my in-laws.
I also love that when you watch the videos of the Pope being tackled at the Christmas Eve mass, you can see my friend John right in front of him in the procession. I knew he was in Rome, but I didn't realise he was saying mass with the Pope! His fellow Jesuits are now threatening to send him to martial arts classes because he totally FAILed in his Pope-protecting ninja duties.
This delights me more than I can say.

Stupid would-be terrorists overshadowing all other news for an entire week after Christmas. The Pope got tackled? How is it, in a snowed-in house full of raging Catholics, all of them with nothing to do but watch TV (or similar), I completely failed to hear about this story?I love my in-laws.

There you go. Good thing for amateur vids, since the news cameras were aimed at the wrong spot and missed it entirely!

My new urologist. I know, weird, right? I actually love all of my respective specialists but this was a new one for me. I was surprised by how nice and informative she was. I don't often learn a lot at the doctors but I actually did today.

This American Express commercial. I think it's brilliant -simple and creative- and it just makes me smile.

There was some Zelda talk going on today, so I decided to play through it since I haven't in a while. Took about 2 hours. No deaths. I also realized that I only use candles for coin collection, since I already know the pattern of all of the dark rooms. I also finally have the 9th dungeon down pat. This one always used to take a little time since when I was younger I never knew how to get the red ring. So I just used to wander aimlessly around until I stumbled upon it. I also always used to finish with 15 hearts because I didn't know where one hear container was. I imagine it was the one in the bush, but I'm not positive. I ended up beat the dungeons in an odd order too. I hit the ones that were convenient after I did my early shopping. I ended up going 3,4,1,2,8(with the white sword, that was fun),6,5,7. I don't have a particular order except that the first four are done in some order and that 7 is last. 7 is such a stupid level. Oh, did I mention that I love this game.now I want to try to do it without dying once. :-p

Because the red candle really comes in handy and the boss is so cool that he comes back all the way from level one and there are so many cool new enemies and there is this awesome guy that makes you give him a 60 rupee piece of meat to get passed. Level 7, you deserve to be located at the bottom of the lake.
