I love that when you're an adult, you can totally go and buy yourself a canteloupe and eat the whole dang thing all in one sitting, and no one is allowed to tell you you'll ruin your dinner.

Man I love melons.

I feel the exact same way and thought I was the only one! Everyone else is like "they taste exactly the same, what's your problem?" or are even "no, cantaloupe is gross, honeydew is the one that's edible." WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE, NOMI?

I enjoy cantaloupe but can only handle it in very small quantities. Honey Dew melon is a bit bland, but I like it.

I think I have finally figured out what the cantaloupe problem is, at least for me: It tastes like squash. A sweet squash, but still. It's definitely in there with that family of flavors and, somehow, that puts me off it a little bit.

I prefer honeydews to canteloupes, but I will gladly eat both. Out here something called a Gallia melon is popular, and it's like some sort of freakish hybrid between the two. And their honeydews are bright yellow and football-shaped. Tonight I eat the honeydew, so I'll report back if they're different than the round green ones we're used to.

When trying to concentrate cantaloupe on my quest to make some killer good ice cream, I pureed a melon and simmered it on the stove. Once it heats up, the flavor breaks and it tastes like bitter squash. I have yet to fulfill my quest. I'll just have to find a way to get to Las Vegas to get my favorite melon gelato.

I love all melon, though. When I was 2 and visiting my dad's family in Arkansas, I ate a whole 1/2 watermelon by myself. You know, one of those huge ones? My mom still laughs about that. Honey dew is my least favorite, just because there isn't enough flavor. I enjoy the flavor that is there, but there's just not enough of it! (And it does NOT taste like cantaloupe!)

I typically find honeydew bland, as well. But this bright yellow one, dang, that was tasty! It actually tasted like something!

I could google cantaloupe and honeydew so I had an idea of what you all were going on about but the truth is, I'd look it up, know the difference for all of a few minutes, then go back to not knowing/remembering what they are.

You could put either/both in front of me right now and I wouldn't be able to identify it/them.

Watermelon is great, though. That I know and like.

An English-style honeydew:

And here you can see the honeydew, canteloupe (bottom left), and gallia melon (right of the honeydew):

Yes, that is the cantalope I am used to (bottom left) with bright orange fruit inside. However, the honeydew looks much different. This is what I am used to here, with green fruit inside. Is that the kind you have in Canada?

That's the stuff, Nomi. Clicking around on wikipedia, I found out that the British "honeydew" is also called a Canary Melon. Huh. Apparently there is a wide world of delicious melons out there yet to be tasted!

Actually, the cantaloupe we eat here is Musk Melon. Real cantaloupe apparently comes from Italy (I think).

Steph, do you have a link or picture of the original cantalope? The wikipedia entry for cantalope/muskmelon lumps them all together, although does mention the European variety.

Um, no, not really. I think I heard that from a friend way back in massage school from a friend who's family was close to the melon growing industry there.

ETA: Originally, cantaloupe referred only to the non-netted orange-fleshed melons of Europe; however, in more recent usage it has come to mean any orange-fleshed melon (C. melo)

He was probably referring to this. From poking around the melon articles on wiki, there's a lot of confusing information!

Again, love watching my husband and the cats. Now that we've switched them to wet food, I feed them breakfast, and he feeds them supper. I'm usually in bed by the time he feeds them, so I was not aware of the existence of their little ritual.

Here's me in the morning, getting them breakfast. "Alright, alright already, sheesh. Calm down. I'm getting there." Grab can of food, dump approximately half in Reece's bowl, walk across the room to Tara's bowl, dump the rest. "There you go."

(The bowls are separated so that we can keep an eye on Tara's bowl, because she eats more slowly, and if we can't see, Reece will bully her away from it and take her share.)

Here's Donny at night: "Okay, is it time for num-nums? Ready for num-nums buddy, baby girl? Oh, we're starving, aren't we? It's that time, isn't it? Num-nums time! Okay. Where do we have to go first? Where do we need to go first?" Cats lead him over to the pantry, where he grabs a spoon. "That's right. Okay, now where do we go? Where to now?" Cats lead him over to the stacks of cans. "Which one do you want tonight? Huh? Which one?" Cats either make indication of some type or an indication is inferred. "Mmm... Chicken and tuna with cheese. Good choice, that looks really yummy." Husband puts both of the bowls up onto a box and gives them the can lid to lick, carefully divides the can evenly between them, puts bowl down for Reece, talks to them as he walks Tara's bowl over to its spot.

Cutest thing ever.
