What are YOU lookin' at?

Postby Sparrowhawk » Fri Mar 30, 2007 11:57 pm

With the rise of alternate medium through which to receive audio-visual stimulation to our hyper-active and deficient attention-giving brain stems, television and its ratings have been falling fast. With the exception of purely psycho-hypnotic programming like American Idol, Dancing With the Stars and Deal or No Deal (essentially the "pick a number" game) that simply zombify people into watching, most people I talk to don't have time for TV.

So the question I ask is, what DO you stare at through the TV tube these days? I admit that I myself don't spend a lot of time with its programming, at least previously. Time constraints and the fact that my free time is usually in the early morning meant that my only options were daily soaps and infomercials. Luckily DVR and TiVo technologies allow me to watch the programs I find to not suck, and skip the ones I think blow harder than the freak love child of Al Franken and Ann Coulter.

Here's what I usually end up watching in my spare time:

(Crime Drama)
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
Law & Order
Bones

(Sci-Fi)
Star Trek: The Next Generation reruns
Star Trek: Voyager reruns
Battlestar Galactica

(Comedy)
Robot Chicken
Family Guy
Futurama

(Tech/Gaming/News)
Cinematech: Nocturnal Emissions
Attack of the Show
X-Play

(Other)
Chip & Dale's Rescue Rangers
Ninja Warrior
Tailspin

Now, some of those (all of the tech and the comedy) I can watch online/via podcast/etc, and more and more of the others (even the established TV heavyweights like Law & Order) are beginning to offer more online content and episodes via the web. Is this the death of TV? Is it really like Star Trek: TNG told us, that TV would become obsolete soon after the start of the 21st century? And, if you actually still watch the 'tube (rather than the inter-tube) what programs still catch your eye?

I would stick mine into categories, but it's too short of a list.

Grey's Anatomy
Scrubs
Family Guy (It just seems to always be on some channel)
Cowboy Bebop (although I own this, so I can watch it whenever)
And i've just started watching Planet Earth

I really don't have time for TV. Even on my free time, it's not my first choice of entertainment.

As for the whole shows on the internet thing, I think it's pretty convenient. I'm hooked on Grey's Anatomy and love that I can catch missed episodes online.

TV? People watch TV? I don't. I don't even watch podcasts anymore, and I only touch Youtube for the occasional viral video.

Heh. Thanks to pweb for eating all of my time :)

The only show I ever watch on TV is new episodes of South Park, and that's mostly because my friends tell me to. Before the newest season started, I didn't watch anything at all.

Is TV going away? I certainly hope so. I certainly do not miss it at all so far.

I haven't watched TV (except for a few lame minutes here and there, oh and part of a movie) since coming to Spain, and that's okay with me.

At home, the only shows I sort of watch regularly are The Daily Show and the Colbert Report, but not even that so much any more since I was too busy last semester to stay up until midnight every night or remember to watch last night's episode at 8. Whose Line Is It Anyway? used to be part of my routine, but I haven't watched that in a long time. The only series I really got attached to were Boy Meets World (still my favorite, and I have 3 tapes full of it), and American Dreams, which was like a soap opera with a historical element.

As long as my list is, I don't watch TV that often. I'm mostly on the computer, playing my DS, reading, or watching anime (on my computer.)

I love TV. There are a multitude of good shows that have come out in recent years. There are also some mediocre shows that I watch anyway.

Sunday Night:
Battlestar Galactica (though, it's now done it's 3rd season - no 4th till 2008)
Smallville (that's when it's on Space Channel in Canada)

Monday Night:
Heroes

Tuesday Night:
House
Gilmore Girls

Wednesday:
by this time Veronica Mars has downloaded (since I don't have the CW), so I watch it on my computer

Thursday Night:
My Name is Earl
The Office
Scrubs

"Background Noise" (somewhat) Daily TV:
Re-runs of Friends, Arrested Development and Sex and the City
Jeopardy
local News
The Hour with George Strombolopoulus
One Duck to rule them all.
--------------------------------
It needs to be about 20% cooler.

I watch TV pretty regularly, but only a few different shows:

Scrbus almost every night
House every week
Futurama when I remember
Colbert Report when I remember

I've also started having CNN on in the background a lot of the time, just so I'm not completely out of the loop on current events.

I've deliberately stayed away from Lost and Heroes, because I'm sure I'd get addicted, and I just don't have time for that.

I've been watching a lot more of it since I've had my own room... the quiet is unnerving, so it tends to be background noise. To that end, I love anything on the food network minus the few exceptionally annoying hosts, and a great many things on the travel channel.

Shows that I am truly addicted to are few, but they are currently Lost, Project Runway or (to a much lesser degree) spin offs, and VERONICA MARS!

I don't have a tv!

But when I do, I will seek out:
Little Mosque on the Prairie
Royal Canadian Air Farce
Jeopardy

Sometimes I will watch, if bored:
CSI
Simpsons (rarely)
Futurama
Star Trek

At work, I try to aim the tv at:
CSI
Law and Order
Jeopardy
News
Anything not reality-tv-based

hear the bells are

But I still watch:

Lost
Battlestar Galactica
Heroes (behind but trying to catch up)
And a ton of different sporting events

On top of that, I watch my Firefly series pretty regularly. But mostly I watch movies.

Do you think Sci-Fi will make a TV show based on The Lost Room? I certainly hope so. :?
That would be incredible. It's time to go download it.

The only t.v. show I watch with any sort of regularity or devotion that is still playing is The 4400. Beyond that, all the shows I ever paid attention to are off the air (Daria, Firefly, Quantum Leap, Sex and the City, the Wonder Years).

I haven't been a huge fan of television since the early to mid-90s, when all my shows from childhood were going off the air (think Nickelodeon or Saturday morning /TGIF shows).

I watched Daria for a while when it was syndicated, but they only play certain episodes and I've already seen them all.

It's because of them the sig limit is so damn short.

My sig is currently at least half the size of what his was. So unless you still think mine is too big, do me a favor and trust that I wouldn't call someone out on something that I myself am guilty of.
