My Adventures with the Mafia

Postby Eaquae Legit » Wed Mar 28, 2007 7:02 pm

Today I was sitting at a Starbucks with my laptop and my codicology work, and since I'd left the iPod at home, I couldn't help but overhear the conversation happening next to me.

There were comments about how you "can't let people get away with stuff like that" and how "breaking his legs" was an appropriate consequence.
Comments about how you don't move to New York* and just try to set up shop without having people who will protect you.

Now either these people watch WAY too much of The Sopranos, or I had good reason to be glad when they left. This was not a joking conversation, there was no laughter. They were in earnest, and honestly baffled why someone would move without "protection." And out of the corner of my eye I could see one of them kept looking over at me. Keep your head down, act absorbed in the codicology, don't look at them...

It was very surreal. I wish I'd written down some of what was being said. But then, maybe you'd never hear from me again.

* May not have been New York exactly, but the city is irrelevant.

Scary Mafia!! Funny thing is, though, a lot of people in Italy thought the Elders were mafia when Brian was there on his mission.

I'm pretty sure missionaries don't talk about breaking legs... Of if they DO, I got short-changed when they visited me. No leg-breaking, just God and history and stuff.

Alan's dad is higher up than that. Remember, Alan has bodyguards when not at school. And not just the renta-cop kind. Bodyguards. Like good ones. His dad is on a much higher pay grade ;)

I love gossiping about Alan's dad. He gets mad though. Keep it hush hush.

Haha. Yeah, just watch out Lewis. You don't want any big russians breaking your knees just 'cause you were having a little fun.

No accents at all! I was so disappointed.

Just my luck that when I run into mafia, they're boring local mafia.

Alan's dad et al have the accents. The scary russian mobster accents. Sadly, they'd just have some lackey do your knees. Remember, they're on a high pay grade.
