Comic Book Movies

Postby Hegemon » Tue Mar 20, 2007 9:08 pm

Many of you know that my first love is and always has been comic books. I love them and just about everything related to them, from the action figures to the movies.

The last few years have been a golden age for comic book movies, which I have naturally loved. I am going to list a few of the upcoming comic books movies, with what i expect to see and what i would like to see.

Spider-Man 3: I have no idea how it will be enough other than a steaming pile of s***, however I have faith in Raimi making it good. I just honestly don't see how he will pull it off.

The previews have some awesome effects. Venom looks great and so does Sandman. Harry Osborn looks like... an evil green power ranger with a flying glider. I would have preferred him to be brought in as Hobgoblin. Anyways, I have no idea how they will have a coherent and halfway decent story when there are three villains who seem to be totally different and disconnected. There is also rumor of a fourth villain.

The Incredible Hulk: From what I know it will have nothing to do with the last Hulk movie. THANK GOD!!! I don't want to see another Hulk that grows to 30 feet. The Hulk is 7 to 8 feet, max. And once he reaches that height, he doesn't get bigger!!! The other thing is that the origin was needlessly changed because in this post 9/11 world it would be pretty easy to explain why new kinds of nukes are being tested.

Iron Man: Great casting, so I am pretty hopeful for it. Not nuts about their choice of villain, being the Mandarin, but I understood it because the guy is his primary antagonist. I am curious as to how they will explain his power rings because the story involving them being a power source for a spaceship, created by a sentient race of dragons that crash landed to Earth sounds... I honestly wish that wasn't the story in the comics either...

Batman: The last movie was fantastic. My only qualm was the fact that it seemed to overlook Bruce's detective skills and intelligence, which is the thing that makes him such a badass. Superman and the rest of the Justice League aren't intimidated by him because of his fighting prowess, because those guys could splatter him with their pinky fingers. He is in their league because of his amazing mind, and that should be shown in the movies. I would bring it in by adopting some CSI type elements into the story.

Superman: I wasn't thrilled with the last movie. Lex Luthor's plan was completely idiotic and pointless. And then there is the child... I hate the child so much... my blood boils every time I ever think of the little bugger.

What do I want in a Superman sequel? A couple things. Firstly, someone other than Lex to fight. Perhaps a team-up with Brainiac would be good. I would also like a villain who can match superman in a fight. That could be done by bringing in Doomsday (his origin would likely need to be changed). The alternative would be to have a teamup with Lex and Darkseid, which would be pretty sweet because Darkseid is one of the few people who can stand up to Superman in a fight.

But there is one thing that is more important than anything else when it comes to the sequel. KILL THE DAMN KID!!! SUPERMAN IS NOT SUPPOSED TO HAVE A SON!!!!!!!! Plus it would be a cheap and effective way of bringing emotion into it. Like Superman goes totally nuclear on Doomsday after Doomsday squishes the kid.

Wolverine: It's about time they gave him his own movie so he can stop hogging all the damn X-Men movies.

There is a lot that they can do with the character. I would like to see some sort of focus on his past as a Weapon X operative. Perhaps something that shows his relationship with Sabretooth. Sabretooth is set to be in the movie, however i would like there to be some big changes from what we saw in X-Men.

Sabretooth is big, but not necessary bulky. He needs to be muscular and lean. In X-Men he was totally stiff and slow, which is very unlike his character. Sabretooth doesn't hit people with trees and toss them around. He gets up close and personal, slashing savagely gutting his opponent. Most importantly, he is very fast, and so is Wolverine. When Wolverine and Sabretooth fight, it should practically be a blurry mess of blood and torn flesh.

That is all I feel like talking about for now. What do you guys think of the ideas and what would you like to see in the films? Anything you want to see made into a movie that hasn't been done yet?

I would love to see superman fight doomsday and die, setting off all of the superman wannabes (superboy, man of steel, etc.) that take his place. I see the fight with doomsday happening early in the movie, and hte movie focusing not so much on superman as what happens after he's gone. I'm not saying they'll ever make a movie like i want, but its a nice idea.
The Makeout Hobo is real, and does indeed travel around the country in his van and make out with ladies... If you meet him, it is customary to greet him with a shot of whiskey and a high five (if you are a dude) or passionate makeouts (if you are a lady).

Am I a geek if I just want them to make a movie about Doomsday's origin, without bringing Superman into it?

Aren't you forgetting the new Fantastic Four movie, with the Silver Surfer?

I enjoy these movies, because I've never been a big comic reader, and I am introduced to a whole cast of characters and new plots that I otherwise wouldn't encounter.

Except for Daredevil. I have no idea if the comics are any good, but that movie was so awful that it upped my hatred of Ben Affleck, something not previously thought possible. God that movie sucked.

I actually never understood what the problem people had with the DD movie was, although I don't think that all that many saw the director's cut which was far better than the theatrical release.

As for the Fantastic Four, I didn't say anything about it because I am still royally pissed about the last one and don't really give a damn one way or another what they do with this one as long as it is fairly successful. err... in case you wonder why I care about its success, it is because when a comic book movie tanks it can sour the market for comic book movies for awhile.

The way I see Spider-man 3 playing out is the same way the Venom Saga played out in the 90s cartoon. Harry Osborn and The Sandman are only villains for Symbiote Spider-man to fight and the main villain is the Symbiote and Venom. They chose Sandman for god-knows-what-reason. He's a throw away villain in my eyes. He will be playing the role of The Shocker. As I recall, Spider-man fought The Shocker while wearing the Symbiote and it hadn't occured to Peter that he was losing a fight to the Symbiote when he almost killed The Shocker.

As for Harry Osborne, he might be an ally later on down the road for Spider-man, but for right now, they have to finish what they started in the first movie, but he's as likely a main villain as Sandman.

Most people are assuming Venom will be in the last battle only, but I'm with the other group of people who think he'll be in the latter half of the MOVIE. Once again, I wouldn't worry too much about Sandman or Harry Osborne as I don't think they'll be as big of a deal as Venom. As far as a fourth villain goes, I don't see it happening unless we're talking about Symbiote Spider-man vs Peter Parker's conscious.

Erm... I've been quickly becoming a big Spider-man fan since my friend bought me a couple of volumes of Ultimate Spider-man for Christmas...

Anyway, off the subject of Spider-man...

Batman Begins was bad ass. I loved how realistic everything was. I was getting tired of Bat-this and Bat-that and Bat-skates and all the crap and I'm glad the movies were revamped to stop it from going off the deep end and jumping the shark.

Superman--Not a big fan of the alien man and so I can't really say I was disappointed. I am, however, a fan of Kevin Spacey and I was not disappointed with him.

Hellboy--I wasn't a Hellboy fan when I watched the movie, but I used to know someone who was. Quite frankly, I liked it and I'm looking forward to the next. Ron Perlman is a superb actor.

TMNT--I grew up with the original cartoon and I liked the new TV show, so this is a definite see for me.

Transformers (technically...)--I did watch G1, but I was mostly a Beast Wars fan and though I was disappointed when David Kaye wasn't chosen for Megatron, I really can't argue with the G1 fans because this isn't my Transformers movie, it's theirs, but I will enjoy it nonetheless. (I wasn't too broken up about Gary Chalk not getting the role of Optimus because he's more of the Gorilla Optimus than a 16 Wheeler Optimus.)

Sin City--I never read the comic, but the first movie was good. I'm looking forward to the next two.

Fantastic Four--Okay, I wasn't a big fan of the comic or cartoon or whatever when I watched the movie, but I really enjoyed the film, despite the monster level of corniness. I am looking forward to the Silver Surfer's appearance in this next one.

X-men--I'd like to see a second trilogy where the group fights Apocalypse. Magneto has had his trilogy and it was pretty good. As far as the actual X-men goes, I think a somewhat new cast is in order. Obviously Jean Grey is out, Wolverine in, new Charles in, Gambit in, etc.

Ah, right. Another Frank Miller classic. I kind of wish I was a Frank Miller fan after watching two really good movies based off his comics. (Possibly three if Batman Begins was based on one of his Batman graphic novels.)

Oh, wow, see, I hated SinCity. I mean, there were parts that were okay, but so much of it was just so terribly overdone that it felt like it ruined the good parts.

I liked both Sin City and Hellboy a lot. I don't really know anything about the comics that they come from, so there is nothing that I really want from their sequels.

I basically had 3 problems with the FF movie. Two of them were interconnected, which was the dumbing down of Reed so that he is basically just a physicist and making Sue smarter so now she's some bio genius. That bit of characterization comes right out of the Ultimate version of the FF and I have never liked the change. But the thing that really pissed me off was how badly they dropped the ball on Doom. Doom is by far my favorite character in any medium and they totally destroyed him in the movie, so badly that there is no way to possibly redeem him in a future sequel. I would be happy if they just pretended the first movie didn't happen and start from scratch, but sadly that won't happen.

As far as the sequel is concerned, I must admit that the Surfer looks really cool.

I think you're probably right about the Spider-Man movie. That is actually something I had considered, but i could see Harry lasting throughout the whole movie. As i recall, in the cartoon, Rhino was also one of the villains that Spidey beat when wearing the symbiote.

I think that Sandman is a very cool looking character, but I have never been nuts with him as a spidey villain because he is so far out of spidey's power range. In any case, I figure that raimi came up with a clever way for spidey to beat him.

i really liked Sin City.

i've loved the graphic novels for years, though. so that might have something to do with it.

He'll probably beat Sandman the same way he did the first time in Ultimate Spider-man. Lots and lots of water. And thanks, I couldn't for the life of me figure out who the other villain was in that saga.

I liked Spider-man 3 despite being pissed off about how they did Venom for the movie. Though I was upset about him being so scrawny, never doing the fearsome tongue thing, and the white spider never being that obvious on his chest (at least it was there. It wasn't there on Spider-man's chest) the thing I was the most pissed off about was that they gave Venom like no screen time. They would show him for a second and then switch back to one of the other three characters in the fight. He didn't really even smack Spider-man around that much, either. The most he did was hold Spider-man down while Sandman beat on him. Lame.

But the rest of the movie I liked.

Spiderman 3 was weak. There's no getting around it. By far the worst of the series. I hope they can continue them going, because Spiderman is an icon and worthy of screen time. Sam Raimi is tired, it's time to move on with a new director and a different direction. As for Kirsten Dunst not coming back, oh well. That's fine. Peter Parker doesn't need Mary Jane anyway, at least not right now. I was disapointed with the portrayal of Gwen Stacy. I liked Venom, but the movie lacked. The only important piece to the puzzle is Tobey Maguire, if you can get him to return you don't have to worry about the series.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfur looks awesome. That's exactly what I look for in a comic-to-screen. I haven't read a lot of FF comics so I'm not totally invested into the characters, nor do I know them very well. I guess that's why I could excuse it's flaws where as John couldn't.

Sin City 2 will be cool.

TMNT was enjoyable.

Wolverine is going to be badass.

Magneto should also be very good.

I enjoyed Superman Returns and I think that the sequel will be even better. Singer had to introduce Superman to an entire new generation, in many ways it was a retelling of the original. The next one will go Wrath of Kahn on us.

Salaam

I saw S3 last night and halfway through I said to myself "This is really cartoony", but it's supposed to be cartoony in a way, since it's a comic book movie, but it could have been so much better.
How many bloody times does Peter Parker need to cry in a two hour movie??

On the plus side, I had a blast going to see it because, quite frankly, it's hilarious. Paul and I made snide comments to each other and the group of guys in front of us were making snide comments, so it made it quite enjoyable.

Ah HA! So I'm not the only one who noticed the sudden eyeliner. Where'd it come from, anyway? He combs his hair in front of his eyes and suddenly he's got eyeliner on.
