No, I don't really think some terrible incident can make a person change for the better: that stuff occurs only in good fiction.
My grandfather is going through a terrible ordeal and he hasn't reformed one bit.

I say yes. I know a girl who had a traumatic childhood, and she says it has strengthened her faith, and made her stronger.
