I'd just like to say that I am now a Master of Arts. I won't convocate until November, but I got the results for the KILLER LATIN EXAM OF DOOM, and I passed!!!
It's a pass/fail exam, 2 pages of Latin to be translated on sight, no dictionary or other aids allowed. We (students) spend our entire school years preparing for it and fearing it. It's the cause of panic, nightmares, ulcers, and worse.
I passed.
Granted, I only passed the MA version (the PhD version is much, much worse), but still. That fulfills my degree requirements and thus I am now considering myself "Master of Arts."
The petty matter of a 20-page paper pales in comparison.
I win at life.
Passing this exam was something of a sine qua non for PhD acceptance. Passing it doesn't mean I will get accepted, but failing it would guarantee I'd get rejected. I have hope, still.

And there will come a time, you'll see, with no more tears.
And love will not break your heart, but dismiss your fears.
Get over your hill and see what you find there,
With grace in your heart and flowers in your hair.

*runs around the room kicking pillows into the air with glee*
After a very long and nerve-wracking wait, I can finally report. I did not get into UofT for my PhD. That hurt at first, but I really didn't have a strong application and I didn't have a clear vision of what I wanted to study when I applied. In April, I struck upon a vision, and I applied to a different school, one I had a very good feeling about. I liked the program, and at a conference I met with some of the professors, and I liked them and I liked what they had to say. I threw together an application with my new! improved! vision and I sent it off in early June.
Four months later, I have a formal offer of acceptance, from the University of York. For the canucks in the crowd, this is not to be confused with York University.
Yes, I am moving to England in January. It's exciting and terrifying all at once.
But man... I'm moving to England!

I really hope you know how utterly and totally proud I am of you, dearest.
And I think your vision is absolutely beautiful. I hope York is the place where you can realize it, because it is worth doing.
Have fun celebrating!

Thanks!
I experienced several emotional states in rapid succession, something like this:
(opening inbox)
(disbelief)
(burgeoning joy)
(full joy)
(terror)

Not a soul. That's part of what's so terrifying (see: angsty smilie, above). I'm moving away from everything and everyone I know. I've never even visited England before.

Thanks, all. This is definitely a big move for a real homebody like me. Of course, I've always talked about it, about living abroad for a while, but it's the first time I've had to do more than daydream. I'm sure this thread will get more angsty leading up to my departure date, and I'll be whining about everything under the sun.
Today I am going to be visiting my mentor-prof for other reasons, and I can't wait to see his face when I tell him I'm in! It will likely mean a trip to the nearest pub, which I can't complain about.
I'm definitely looking forward to people coming to see me - my best friend is already making plans to visit in March. I'm really excited about that, since by then I will be missing the items I know I'll forget, and I'll be homesick like whoa.
Anyway, that's the news for now. I got the notice in an email, and not much other detail. Apparently a great big package of INFOSTUFF is going to be posted to me, and from there I hope I can make solid plans (like flights).

If full of ducks.
I am SO gonna enjoy this place.

It has the highest duck density of any uni in the country.

It's going to be difficult. Fortunately, my best friend is going to be visiting me in short order and she can bring some extras for me.
