Member Rankings

Postby Hegemon » Wed Sep 27, 2006 10:32 pm

We decided that it would be fun for the members to be able to have rankings again.

What we have come up with is a 4 tier system.

Everyone starts off as a launchie, then after 50 posts they hit soldier, after 500 they become toon leaders and finally at 2000 they become a commander.

The moderators for the time being will be Speakers for the Dead.

In the future we might at times do custom rankings. For instance, we might have a contest to give away a special ranking for a month, or we could tie it into the PWEB Awards (assuming we get it started again).

However, with this new system we will also have a stern anti-spam policy. If we catch a person spamming we will warn them and even delete some of their posts. Furthermore, if we find that the rankings lead to a problem, we will remove the additional rankings and go back to simply having Launchie and Soldier.

And a round of applause for John for doing this!

He is back.

As I recall, Speaker for the Dead started it and did it 2 or 3 times. Then he kinda disappeared and Chris did it at least once. Last time around there were nominations, but they never got finished.

YAY! I think I might've just barely been around when that system was in effect. Cool beans. :)

That's really cool--thank you, John. :)

I like the rankings. They were one of my favorite things about PWeb 2. And, as newbie, they fascinated me as I tried to figure out why Ali and Jani's (I think) were different from soldier and yet I didn't think they were mods.

Are posts in the game room counted in the user's post count?

Perhaps what I meant to say was.... Are posts in the game room intended to be counted in the user's post count? (Or, are they always going to be counted?)

The forum software counts them. I'd love to see them discounted, myself, but I don't even know if that's possible.

I'm not too keen on people spamming up the game board just to get a rank, and it's the easiest place to spam.

It's certainly possible; it just may require modifications to phpBB.

Edit: Just to show it can be done.... if you really do want to prevent Game Room posts from being counted....

in the file includes/functions_post.php, there should be a line like this around line 438:

if ($mode != 'poll_delete')

changing it to

if ($mode != 'poll_delete' && $forum_id != 4)

looks like it would prevent all future posts in the game room from affecting user post count.

(Note that his is horrible coding style, since I'm hardcoding the Game Room forum id; it's just a proof of concept. I'm also guessing on the phpBB version, but I'm assuming it's at least somewhere close to 2.0.21.)

Edit: Come to think of it, another line added should be

if ($forum_id == 4)
{
$db->sql_query("", END_TRANSACTION);
}

around line 448 (above that "return;") to be slightly better. Not that you're actually doing this anyway, since this is just a crude proof of concept....

I could be a commander? ::sobs:: from the very first moment I joined PWeb I prayed I would someday be a commander. I got Launchie, then Soldier, then Toon Commander and I kept going, kept posting, but Commander never came...

I'm going to have to start posting in Word Association.

EDIT: Flood limit should NOT apply to edits.

I should be getting ready to celebrate my promotion to commander right now. It'll probably take me another 3.5 years to get back to 2000 posts... Ah well. :roll:

I can't say as it matters a whole lot to me. i mean i've been a launchie 3 times now. if you added up all my posts from all three iterations of pweb, i'd probably only have 1000 posts. i rather stopped taking note of such things once 2.0 started.

I've used phpBB before, and I could swear there was a little check box in there to turn off post count in certain forums. But maybe that was a different piece of software...

I just looked at the member list by post count, and thought it was seriously funny that i was number 7 in the top ten. that won't last long. lol

anonshadow looks to be in headlong flight to commander though...

Only because I've been holed up in bed the last few days with a terrible cold. Once I recover and go back to my normal routine (which will likely be tomorrow, whether or not I feel any better), I will certainly fall behind.

Edit: Ironically, I also care very very little about post count. I think part of this has to do with the fact that I sometimes post in the game room, and part of it has something to do with the fact that just because I've posted a lot doesn't mean I've said anything worth saying, and part of it has something to do with the fact that on another message board I hit 10k a few months ago.

(It should be noted that it is a very big message board, that I had mono last fall, and that I have been on it since 2002).

The titles are what makes the numbers cool.

I remember, when I first joined last summer, I was inordinately pleased when I hit 10 posts and became a soldier... it was like I'd been given a raspberry icie.

Unfortunately that may not be that far off. I've had a sore throat the past few days.

Though i find no problems with being stuck in bed.

I wish I were stuck in bed. Can we trade places Elena? I have to drive a good distance and I'm going to be gone for the weekend. To make things worse, I don't want to go and I'm leaving right after work!

Honey, you don't want to trade places. I get rewarded for being ill by having to monitor my 12 year old brother all afternoon to make sure he's doing his homework.

Doesn't the Geneva convention have something to say about that?
The Makeout Hobo is real, and does indeed travel around the country in his van and make out with ladies... If you meet him, it is customary to greet him with a shot of whiskey and a high five (if you are a dude) or passionate makeouts (if you are a lady).

The Geneva conventions actually only relate to people at times of war... civilians who are stuck with a war in their country, POW's, etc..

And you know why I know this?

I was in a class so bad on Monday that I seriously wanted to report the prof. I think that the class was a form of cruel and unusual punishment and I was pissed when I saw that the conventions do not apply to me.

hehe I've had a few classes that felt about that bad. granted, i never actually looked it up. I thought it was common knowledge that it was only for times of war.

The problem is not so much the joke being understandable as the person getting the joke.
