Banned Words

Postby Olhado_ » Tue Jan 02, 2007 6:21 pm

So I heard this on the radio and I thought it was interesting. So, if I thought it was interesting and I probably say words all the time people wish they could ban, then people here might like it. :)

Here are some of the words that have been banned recently:
* GITMO
* COMBINED CELEBRITY NAMES (c.f. Brangelina, TomKat)
* AWESOME
* GONE/WENT MISSING
* PWN or PWNED
* NOW PLAYING IN THEATERS
* WE'RE PREGNANT
* UNDOCUMENTED ALIEN
* ARMED ROBBERY/DRUG DEAL GONE BAD
* TRUTHINESS
* ASK YOUR DOCTOR
* CHIPOTLE
* i-ANYTHING
* SEARCH
* HEALTHY FOOD
* BOASTS

Sorry to go a little off topic, but I swear I know that name (Olhado) and I just can't place it...is it the handicapped guy in Homecoming?

Hanicapped guy from the speaker series, I think.
The Makeout Hobo is real, and does indeed travel around the country in his van and make out with ladies... If you meet him, it is customary to greet him with a shot of whiskey and a high five (if you are a dude) or passionate makeouts (if you are a lady).

Here is a slight clue

recordable eyes.

I had to look up Gitmo.

What's wrong with Chipotle? It is a mexican food chain and a type of pepper; am I missing something?

Just a guess, but it probably has something to do with the pronounciation of the word.

Ha, "chi-PO-tulls"... ugh, that irks me. And "tuh-MA-leez" instead of "to-MA-layss"... "ha-la-PEEN-yo" instead of "ha-la-PAIN-yo" ...and when people can't figure out how to pronounce frijoles ("free-HO-layss"). There's also a Mexican restaurant in my hometown called Chilango's, and everyone says "chi-LAYNG-goes", so I've just given up calling it "chee-LAHNG-gohss" because nobody knows what I'm talking about.

*sigh*... At least most people get tacos and tortillas.

H is completely silent in Spanish, though...

ah-lah-peen-yo

:)

Other than that, I'm irked by all the same things. It's a far less difficult language than English...and I understand being ignorant of that, and there's nothing wrong with it. But so many people just assert a way to say it that's completely wrong :(

Jalapeno starts with a J....not an H.

Edit: And I don't pronounce it l"ha-la-peen-yo" or "ha-la-pain-yo." I say it "ha-la-pen-yo," just like every other person I know does. The other two sound a bit ridiculous.

I break out the velar fricatives for some of that.

That school's been doing the list for years as a publicity stunt. Everyone pays attention for about 5 minutes and then forgets it even exists until they make next year's list.

hehe, true... [x]... although my Colombian friend says [h]. But we're talking about Mexican food. :P

yeah, sorry, ha-la-PEN-yo is better. I guess I wanted to differentiate between [ε] and [e], and ended up going overboard with [eı].

"Ironic" has made an unfortunate comeback. I could also do without "interesting".

You finally post something inflammatory & get away with only a hint from h_k? Damn. Olhado was one of Novinha's sons. He had robotic eyes and was the only one of her children not to pursue science as a career. He was also considered by Ender to be the closest thing he'd ever have to a child.

Hee, yeah. Vowels are always a trick. I find it way easier to get consonants. Vowels are almost all approximations.

oh god.... it's easy!
it's Ja-la-pe-ño

and mexicans do pronounce the fricative velar (or palatal, i am not sure) very very fricatively, like in Spain. If you guys took lessons in french, ñ is like french -gn-.

What is ironic is that you, english speaking guys, have difficulties with Spanish vowels... we only have 5 vowels, and you have almost 20 O_o... and from what i learned about English phonetics, you have all the vowels we have. English phonetics for a Spanish speaker is hell... because there are so many sounds we have never ever heard. The only sounds we have and you don't are: -j-, -r- and -rr-.

Finally, i love the expression "we are pregnant". I mean... a pregnancy is not a matter of a single person, and that expression stresses it.

I just have trouble hearing what symbol I should be using for any given vowel. Although, you are right, the Spanish ones are pretty easy. It's transcribing English vowels that's a trick for me. Especially diphthongs.

I'll be re-reading the series soon. I've only read it once (I read Shadow 3 times, and Game itself 5 times, but the rest of Game Series only once :()

Yeah, English vowels get crazy. Which is why English speakers have problems with Spanish vowels, because we complicate them! :P Take taco [tako] -- by the time an English speaker gets done with it, 1) any number of things could have happened to the first vowel depending on where you're from, and 2) the second vowel gets diphthongized -- not to mention aspiration -- so that where I'm from, people end up pronouncing it [tʰɑkoʊ] (myself included, I'm sure). :stoned:

Jeepers... I have to make an effort to get the [ɑ] sound. [a] comes far more naturally to me.
