Philotic Tunes

Postby Dr. Mobius » Fri Dec 08, 2006 6:15 am

I've decided to try this again since the board's more active now than it was back in July. Basically, everyone suggests a song or two, then I create a CD-sized (80 minute) iMix from the suggested music and post a link. Anything goes, the only requirement being that it's available on iTunes.

Variety is key. The whole point of this is to get people to open up to different types of music they might not have considered before. If your suggestion is significantly different from the others, it actually has a better chance of being in the album. Who's definition of significant are we using? Mine. Why? Because I'm the crazy bastard who'll be buying all this stuff.

A few ground rules:
1. One song per pwebber on the CD.
2. One song per artist on the CD.
3. If we get more suggestions than the 80 minute maximum allows, seniority and diversity come into play. So an oldie who listens to weird music would be pretty much guaranteed while a newbie who likes pop has a ice cube's chance in hell. Sorry, but there had to be some way to resolve the inevitable problem of too much music.

iTunes itself is free. If you don't have it, download it here.

And yes, I realize there's other less expensive methods of doing things. However, I prefer to keep things legal when I can. If you want to debate the ethics and economics of file sharing, do it somewhere else.
The enemy's fly is down.

The Streets Fell Into My Window by The Red Paintings?
If you ever find yourself reading a book entitled The Bible, you will find yourself reading the story of Adam and Eve, whose daring lives led them to put on clothing for the first time to escape from the snake infested garden in which they were living.

Ack! One song to embody my entire musical taste!

Right now... either Kite by Copeland or Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap. But that would probably change next week.

Well, damn, one of my favorite songs isn't available through iTunes.

Ok, how about Ieavan Polkka (Ieava's Polka) by Loituma

Well, I'm torn between coming up with a really obscure song that I like or picking a song thats a bit embarrassing but I love.

"Camouflage" by Third Eye Blind or "Saint Simon" by the Shins.

Stupid iTunes doesn't have my first choice.

(Walking Years Away, Charlie Mars)

I can't decide between these two. You choose.

Crack of Dawn - Rachael Sage
Walking Back - the Cranberries

Simon by Lifehouse

If that's not available: Smokey Robinson and the Miracles "You've Really Got a Hold on Me" or Lion King's "I Just Can't Wait to Be King."

Lifehouse is my first choice, though.
I love all those songs! :D The first one, though, almost made me cry when I listened to it in high school (and I am NOT a crier)... it is 100% applicable to my social history.

Erm, my suggestion? "Naked Eye (Live)" by the Who, from the remastered version of Who's Next.

Can't decide between two, so you make the decision:

"How It Ends" by Devotchka
and/or
"When It Flows" by Great Lake Swimmers
It is not the sound of victory;
it is not the sound of defeat;
it is the sound of singing that I hear.

Wow, someone else who's not only heard of Lifehouse but someone who knows a song that wasn't a radio release. Color me majorly impressed, Mahatma. NoNameFace is my musical bible. I'm not sure I've ever come across a situation where I couldn't find some lyric from that album to comfort me in some small way. "Simon" just happens to be my favorite from the album.

I can't decide.

I've been listening to Geek in the Pink by Jason Mraz a lot lately.

Last night I listened to Sister Golden Hair by America for about 2 hours.

Also Gamble Everything for Love by Ben Lee.

Can someone tell me if "Atomic Food" by David Guetta is in iTunes? If so, I would suggest that.

My first choice would be Hildegaard von Bingen "Caritas habundat in omnia" but Hildegaard can't be found on itunes. Poop.

Second choice... Hidden Cameras "Death of a Tune" (Can be found in itunes! YAY!)

Edit: Results of the search I did on itunes: David Guetta was found, as was the album Just a Little More Love, but the track Atomic Food was not.

1.5 hours of music suggested so far which is more than enough for a CD, but I'll keep this open for a few days at least so everyone gets a chance to participate.

Elena: I'm assuming you meant Waltzing Back.

As for my own suggestion, it'll probably be "Stretched" by Infected Mushroom. Or maybe another IM song, since it's about a 5-way tie for first place.

I was thinking Stretched, Shakawkaw, Converting Vegetarians, Illuminaughty, or Bust a Move, but I Wish is pretty good too. Actually, just about any IM song would be great. It probably wouldn't be a smart to have a song twice as long as everyone else's though, so that would rule out Stretched and Bust a Move.
