I like homonym. And splurge. And hitherto. And pidgin.

Aw, all my other favorite words are bad.
The woods are lovely, dark, and deep
But I have promises to keep
And miles to go before I sleep
Miles to go before I sleep

Onomatopoeia.

Hippopotamus. Which I always, ALWAYS mis-spell as "Hipopotamus" or "Hippotamus".
Who controls the British crown? Who keeps the metric system down?
We do! We do!
Who leaves Atlantis off the maps? Who keeps the Martians under wraps?
We do! We do!
Who holds back the electric car? Who makes Steve Gutenberg a star?
We do! We do!
Who robs cavefish of their sight? Who rigs every Oscar night?
We do, we do!

I know where "Nerd" comes from... (10 points to those who recognize the exact episode):

Remotely
Dorky

I actually think the word "crush" is evocative and totally accurate. Crushes come quick, they come hard, and at the end of things they usually hurt like hell. A crush has a definite physical element to it--the racing heart beat, the butterflies in the stomach--I often remember feeling as though I was collapsing in on myself when in a room with a crush. It's hard to bear up under all that emotion!

(also, WHOA high school flashbacks when thinking about this word).
you snooze, you lose
well I have snozzed and lost
I'm pushing through
I'll disregard the cost
I hear the bells
so fascinating and
I'll slug it out
I'm sick of waiting
and I can
hear the bells are
ringing joyful and triumphant

at the end of things they usually hurt like hell.
Amen to that.

From Grease's "Hopelessly Devoted To You":
Guess mine is not the first heart broken, my eyes are not the first to cry
...
My head is saying "fool, forget him", my heart is saying "don't let go"

I'm more of a flush in my cheeks, tremble/tingle in my lips, brain dumps onto the floor sorta gal when I have a crush. Not to say I don't also get the heart and stomach stuff, it's just typically not as strong or consistent a reaction as the other stuff.

Dork means phallus

Geek has something to do with chickens.

I'm not sure I buy either one of those.

The use of "dork" as a slang word for "penis" was only around for a few years before it really shifted to mean somebody stupid. Even prior to the shift, it certainly didn't refer to the sex organ, but rather to the slang use of "dick" and "penis," generally meaning somebody worthy of contempt.

As far as "geek" goes, it originally meant "fool." But then folks started calling the circus freaks "geeks" and it took off from there. So, while people certainly called those performers that bit the heads off chickens "geeks," it definitely wasn't exclusive to them, as it was generally applied to any kind of carnival freak.

Oh, and nerd was originally slang for stupid/crazy. Isn't it funny how words change in meaning over a few decades?

And they said learning the linguistics of American slang was pointless! Now I just need to find an application of the research I did for my paper on the linguistics of Appalachian slang (primarily that of the Smoky Mountain region in eastern Tennessee). :P
