Underrated Disney Movies

Postby AnthonyByakko » Wed Nov 22, 2006 12:02 am

Disney has put out a lot of movies in the last few decades - some of them have become iconic in our culture, while others have become simple nostalgia. Some of these less-acclaimed films are just as good as their more successful cousins.

To wit; my particular favorite amongst these gems is The Great Mouse Detective. Adventure, danger, comedy and fun, along with quite possibly the cutest voiced Disney character ever, Olivia Flavisham, make it one of my favorites in any genre.

Got a favorite/something to say?

i have a soft spot for Oliver and Company, if we're tlaking strictly underrated Disney movies.
you snooze, you lose
well I have snozzed and lost
I'm pushing through
I'll disregard the cost
I hear the bells
so fascinating and
I'll slug it out
I'm sick of waiting
and I can
hear the bells are
ringing joyful and triumphant

Never seen it. There are so many of them... The Rescuers, Fivel, Black Cauldron, All Dogs Go To Heaven. I hope more of them get the new Disney treatment of restoration and re-release to DVD.

I really liked Disney's rendition of Robin Hood (the one with all of the animals). I don't know how underrated it is, though... I don't tend to discuss it often.

Also, I just looked it up on IMDB, and it was made in '73! Maybe it's just my idealized childhood memory, but the animation seemed a lot better than something from 73...

I agree. But I think Robin Hood is the best Disney cartoon, so it's not underrated in my book.

but the animation seemed a lot better than something from 73...
that's because massive chunks of animation were lifted directly from the Bambi vaults (probably the most artistically complex and pure animated film ever made, and the version we know was drastically cut from a planned two hour runtime, the animators were very upset that the death of thumper scene following the fire was cut, as well as about 80% of the fire).

you'll also find a lot of disney purists/snobs dismiss robin hood as the worst disney animated film, because of this and because the film is nearly a scene for scene remake of a live action 1938 warner bros movie, The Adventures of Robin Hood. Oh and they hate the budget ran out and a large chunk of the movie was never animated (like the credits and narrator)

However I don't care, I still love the movie and think it's an extremely affecting, especially the Not in Nottingham number.

I think the pure artistry of Bambi gets overlooked because it's subject matter is so emotional, but the film is artistically phenomenal. The most overlooked modern film is Rescuers Down Under, a film with unbelievably great animation and characterization that manages to easily surpass the first film. My sentimental favorite is Fox and the Hound which just worked for me as a kid, though Great Mouse Detective was grand too.
So, Lone Star, now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb.

Oddly enough, yesterday both the animated Disney Robin Hood and the 1938 original were on at roughly the same time, so I got the chance to DVR and watch both. Either one is wonderful.

The Emperor's New Groove *I think that's the title?*, voiced by David Spade, was definitely one of my favorites.

OMG! A Disney thread!

AB, all is forgiven.

At any rate... I love all of those movies. And I've seen them all. My mom has a bit of an obsessive compulsive nature when it comes to things she buys/collects, so I've seen, like, every Disney movie. I liked Great Mouse Detective, but it wasn't one I re-watched ad nauseum. I suspect that's just because the whole Sherlock Holmes riff was never really my thing.

Bambi, Robin Hood(my third favorite!), Rescuers, all great.

Oliver and Co., I have mixed feelings about since, like, everyone made jokes about my name because of it. Damn cat.

And Emperor's New Groove, is my fourth favorite Disney movie. "I'm sorry, you've thrown off the emperor's groove."

(the rest of the top five, for those interested:
1) Lion King
2) Alladin
5) Sword in the Stone)

I'm not sure if it's underrated, but Beauty and The Beast is my favorite.

I'm pretty sure All Dogs Go to Heaven was Don Bluth, not Disney. (That movie gives me the wibblies.)

An American Tale isn't Disney, either, though I can't recall the studio off the top of my head.

I'm a real fan of The Rescuers Down Under.

I hate Bambi, though. And Pinnochio. And Dumbo.

Robin Hood, The Sword in the Stone, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King were all childhood favourites, though they're definitely not underrated. I also kind of like Sleeping Beauty - more now than when I was younger. I get the jokes more now, and the sheer animosity of Maleficient is marvellous!

I love Disney movies but I have to point out that not all animated movies from our childhood were Disney-- notably Fievel and All Dogs Go to Heaven.

I third the nomination for The Fox and the Hound which was just rereleased on DVD!

Also, Anthony, what movie are you talking about when you say "Fivel"? Do you mean American Tail, by any chance? Because that is also a Don Bluth, not Disney.

Robin Hood, Fox and the Hound, and Oliver and Company were favorites of mine as a child.
The emperor's new groove I just finally saw - it's really quite funny!!

Sword in the Stone--That's one of my favorite Disney movies, but it doesn't seem that popular. That and Aladdin (the original), and Robin Hood.

Hmm... I'm definitely going to have to watch some of these soon; the names are familiar but I'm just not remembering the actual movies. Sword in the Stone I think I remember, though (that had that "That's what makes the world go round" song in it, right?), and I loved that.

Can't say I particularly liked Emperor's New Groove, though, ugh.

I also know several people who seem to know all of the words to Mulan, and occaisionally recite them. I don't think I've ever seen the whole thing, but the music seems okay from what I hear offhand.

I wouldn't say Mulan is an underrated Disney movie. In fact, it seems pretty popular. Disney likes to make itself seem international, so they use Mulan and Aladdin in their ads. They even had them in their "Disney on Ice" thing.

I also agree with Fox and the Hound and Robin Hood.

I use to have a crush on that fox.

Fox and the Hound was awesome. I honestly liked the hound better (when he was young. The fox was my favorite when they were old). Newsies is high up on my list of favorite Disney movies.

Yuppers. I think it was their lowest-grossing live action movie ever, or something like that.

Hey guys, this isn't a libertarian community - no bestiality!

That being said, Robin Hood needed a sweet makeout scene with Robin and Maid Marian.
