The haiku thread

here's one I read in a parenting mag.

Excuse me loses
its effectiveness when it's
shouted fifteen times.

haha.

Before I share mine, here's a little background:

There's this local radio variety show that is taped at this cool theater in Portland. One thing that they always do is to have the audience write haikus before the show and then they choose their favorite 3 to read on air. The first time I went to the show with my family, it was a week after the 2004 election. My dad wrote this:

Bush re-elected.
Divine retribution for
Complacent lefties?

Needless to say, it was read on-air and got a huge laugh.

None of us has ever had another haiku read.

Writing a haiku
need not be just one sentence
split into three lines.

A single word sounds
I listen, but cannot hear
The singer continues.

Monotone lecture.
Students hypnotized, sleepy.
Pull fire alarm?
There's another home somewhere,
There's another glimpse of sky...
There's another way to lean
into the wind, unafraid.
There's another life out there...

The Makeout Hobo is real, and does indeed travel around the country in his van and make out with ladies... If you meet him, it is customary to greet him with a shot of whiskey and a high five (if you are a dude) or passionate makeouts (if you are a lady).

i dreamt about you
holidays are hard enough
you f****** a******
you snooze, you lose
well I have snozzed and lost
I'm pushing through
I'll disregard the cost
I hear the bells
so fascinating and
I'll slug it out
I'm sick of waiting
and I can
hear the bells are
ringing joyful and triumphant

I went to P-Web
In the Spring, while the hail fell
Warm friendship replies.

There. A proper haiku.

I read each haiku
To find extra syllables
No one fails so far

It takes Alea
To bring back this lovely thread
Be grateful for her

Truly I will do
Anything to avoid work
Even write haiku

Feeling a little
Like this place has once again
Become comatose

Giving up my nap
(Was going to crawl under-
neath my desk at work)

Instead, I will post
Perhaps, like all of the fun
diseases, it spreads
