Rating Systems

Postby Gravity Defier » Tue Apr 16, 2013 8:59 pm

How I interpret 5 stay rating systems (Amazon, Goodreads, etc.) has come up twice in as many days and between the three different people involved in said discussions, we all had different interpretations. Which is probably why I don't trust ratings on anything I buy.

But, mine goes something like this, specifically on Goodreads (I no longer rate on Amazon):
1: I didn't like it OR I hate it. If I hate it, I'll leave a review as well but usually just the rating if I dislike it
2: Meh. I didn't dislike it but I didn't like it, either
3: I liked it well enough and don't regret reading it
4: I really, really liked it
5: "Please marry me, book!"

How do you interpret the ratings?

My interpretations are pretty similar, except it's a lot harder for a book to get a "1."

1: Really disliked. Wish I could get back the time I spent on it.
2: It was okay. Could have traded my time for something better, but not a complete waste.
3: I liked it. Probably won't rush to re-read, but no regrets.
4: I really liked it and will recommend it to others.
5: I absolutely loved it and want to have it with me forever. Generally, these are the books I hug after I read them. I know--weird.
I used to hate gravity because it would not let me fly. Now I realize it is gravity that lets me stand.

what's weird about hugging books? does that make it weird for me to do it? oh well, I'm already so weird it probably doesn't matter...

Your guys' are pretty much mine. The only one that is an active "do not read" is really 1 star. 2 is more "someone will like this book, but probability points to you most likely not liking it." In fact, I guess that's how I view all of them. More stars means more chance of you liking it.

My recent shopping expirence has featured a five star rating system of a slightly different variety:

***** You could drive off a cliff and probably walk away.
**** You'll survive, but minor injuries are likely.
*** You'll probably survive, but you won't like your medical bill.
** If you survive, you'll probably wish you hadn't.
* That's not a car. It's a meat tenderizer on wheels.

1: I actively disliked this product/book/movie and would recommend you avoid it.
2: it was kind of okish. There were some definite problems and there is likely something better out there.
3: perfectly satisfactory but not awesome.
4: pretty freaking cool. Would definitely recommend but I can think of a few downsides.
5: blew my socks off awesome. I love this thing and super highly recommend it.
