The Essentials

Postby Young Val » Fri Nov 10, 2006 1:13 pm

i know that we are much more than the things we own, the way we dress, the music we listen to, the skills we have. but a lot can be learned about a person by these small details. so, here's my question: if someone wanted to be you for a day, what are the essentials? what would they NEED to have in order to embody some facet of who you are? (this will get into a bit of self-mockery, i'm sure).

some of my essentials are as follows:

wardrobe: jeans. sandals. tank top. cardigan. fingerless gloves (in winter). leather jacket (in winter).

items: a paperback copy of Franny and Zooey
claddagh ring
nose stud
messenger bag
laptop
ipod
c.o. bigalow's mint lip gloss
small blank notebook.
pen containing blue ink
a surplus of bandaids and gauze
large cup of coffee, black no sugar.
a pack of camel lights (i know, i know, spare me).
a deck of bicycle playing cards, blue, the box held together by duct tape.
five or six metro cards, only one of which has any money on it.

with these simple items, you too can experience what it's like to be Kelly-As-She-Runs-Errands.

stay tuned for Kelly: The High School Years. The College Years. and all those other years.
you snooze, you lose
well I have snozzed and lost
I'm pushing through
I'll disregard the cost
I hear the bells
so fascinating and
I'll slug it out
I'm sick of waiting
and I can
hear the bells are
ringing joyful and triumphant

This is fun! And you know, Kelly, when you're living in America, you're what you own. ;)

Wardrobe:
Usually jeans or a denim skirt.
A t-shirt or something more decorative, depending on how dirty my house is.
Lately footwear is slippers. In the warmer months, bare feet. If I go outside, a cute pair of heels.

Items:
Pink cell phone
Sippy cup
Cute notebook with dinner lists/shopping lists/important notes/Tyler scribbles
Hair tie
Pink Nalgene, half full of water

Kitchen knife, cutting board, some sort of skillet or pot, wooden spoon
Pacifier hidden in pocket, only for nap time

In order to do it right, make sure you have banana smears on your jeans! Then you will be truly authentic!

It just occured to me that I think given the new configuration of members I might just have become Pweb's most girly member.

How to live the life of Jani the art student:

Wardrobe:

-my favorite jeans
-two or three tanks, tee shirts, vintage sweaters, and/or Good Will discovery tops layered together.
-any of variety of dangly earings. Life is not right if I don't have earings on.
-Cuban Larimar ring on my right middle finger.
-hair tie on my left wrist.
-a variety of pairs of boots, heels, flats, and somewhat sneakerish things that aren't actually sneakers.

The more out of control my life happens to be at any given moment, the more complex the outfit.

Carrying:

-giant, shapeless black leather dump everything bag
-cell phone/life line
-Burt's Bees tinted lip balm
-continually lost set of keys
-journal/sketch book
-Fiber Castel sketching pen M in burnt siena
-Micron artist's pen in .03 (best pen in the WORLD)
-book of poetry of some variety, currently Dickenson
-all of the conents of my wallet taken out of my walet and stuffed into pockets.
-Pom pomegranate lyche green tea, when I can afford it (pretty bad when you go to lunch and your drink costs more than your sandwhich), bottle of water when I can't.
-copius amounts of change jingling in pockets
-fingerless gloves and hat
-puffy coat
-flashdrive/sanity
-iPod, when it's working

I can add your number 8 to my list, but I really just wanted to tell you how much I love you for having paper snowflakes. Seriously. I just taught a lesson (for a class I'm taking) on how to make paper snowflakes, I love them that much.

Yeah, I went through a major paper snowflake phase. I had bought a big book of scrapbook paper -- and I don't scrapbook. So I'd cut them out when I had insomnia or was watching TV. Now I have about thirty of them -- very lacy, very colorful -- as kind of wallpaper by my desk. It's very psychedelic. I'm thinking of thinning them out.

I love unfolding them, especially when they're extremely lacy.

What's cool is cutting them out of magazine pictures. I have one picture of a cafeteria lady that is now a snowflake. It's kind of eerie. Or pictures of cities, masks, animals -- it's very fun.
There's another home somewhere,
There's another glimpse of sky...
There's another way to lean
into the wind, unafraid.
There's another life out there...

To be Caspian in Grad School you would need:

Attire
There's a lot of leeway here, but you're definitely not looking for anything too nice. If you want to play it really safe you want:
T-shirt with a clever (but never objectionable) saying or logo on it, OR a button-up long sleeved shirt.
Tweed sportcoat OR black blazer.
Brown cords OR Jeans
Thick-rimmed glasses

Items for a day at work

- keys: house, car, and classrooms/office (of course)
- netbook pc (for work and recreational web browsing when I have few minutes, like right now)
- Iphone (seldom used, but I always like to have a phone when I'm out of the house. Also replaces my previously carried ipod nano)
- Kobo Touch ereader (lunch time reading)
- 8gb USB flash drive (for back-up and quick transfer of essential work related files on my netbook)
- calculator wristwatch (my 3rd of the same model I've been wearing since the 8th grade)
- wallet (of course)
"Deep in the human unconscious is a pervasive need for a logical universe that makes sense. But the real universe is always one step beyond logic."
- Frank Herbert's 'Dune'
