IMPORTANT: Does the new board work for you?

Postby Wind Swept » Mon Sep 19, 2011 3:28 pm

UPDATE: We're live.

Stage one of project "Make Pweb Awesomer" is an update from phpBB2 to phpBB3.

We have phpBB3 installed, and it appears to be in working order. Please give it a quick once over to make sure everything is working for you as it should be: http://philoticweb.net/phpBB3

Report back here when you're finished.

I don't want any feedback here about aesthetics. This is just about function. Moans and/or cheers regarding the new default theme can be made in the Meta Talk thread on the upgraded board.

Report back quickly.

ETA: Assuming there are no major issues, I'll re-import a completely up-to-date version of the board tomorrow morning and redirect everyone to the updated board.

In the meantime, keep posting on this version of the board.

Works fine for sign in, my PMs all seem to be there, I could post just fine, and my avatar will be viewable as soon as someone enables avatars. I'm happy with how it works.

I'd like to avoid as many posts lost to overlap as possible.
We can't get around this? I'm going to assume whatever has been posted on bb3 (Josh, you, me, and Ela so far) was experimental and can be stood to be lost, whereas the latest version of this one, when a significant number of people have reported back, can be used.

Well, I can re-install and re-import, which will take all of a half-an-hour.

There's only been one post--in Bob, by Claire--since this import that wasn't about moving, so I'd just as well switch now.

ETA: And now one from neo...

Jason also posted and I suspect more people will throughout the day. I think allowing people the rest of the day, at least, to check in and say if it worked or not would be the better option. Then, you can state "At such and such time, redirect will happen." Or something.

But where's the fun without confusion and minor outrage?

Hey, if you want minor outrage, just keep letting me talk. I will get it for you sooner rather than later. ;)

Probably doesn't have to be the whole day but at least an hour or two. Let people make sure their personal belongings are all in order, and all. Basically, give them some warning.

I'm confused and frightened. :?

But it seems to be working for me.

It appears to work. I'd recommend that (1) Sometime in the middle of the night rename the /phpbb2/ folder to something else, (2) Re-import the phpbb2 data to phpbb3, and then (3) Change what I assume is an htaccess file causing the redirect from /phpbb2/ to /phpbb3/.

Yeah. To be honest, I'm nervous about it. Not the technical side. Chris, zero, and Wil have done a great job with the parts they've done and Noodle, who will hopefully keep helping in whatever capacity he can, has been a great ambassador for them. I trust them and think they've done great things.

I'm worried about the politics of changing the aesthetics and what has been referred to as the directional components. We'll see, I guess.

Let's take things one step at a time. so far we have the forum software upgraded, and that will make life a lot easier for everyone. From there we can work on the directional aspects.

This is an exciting step.

I was able to log in and my PM's are there. Seems to be working fine.

I don't know if this counts as an aesthetic thing or a functional issue, but polls look kinda weird. Or is that just me? (feel free to ignore this until further aesthetics discussion)

It works for me. Although the avatars are weird. Is that just my comp settings or is it the new board?

Is there a way to skin it back to something closer to the old board while we discuss/decide on aesthetics?

There is an updated version of the old theme included with phpBB3. Someone with Admin access *ahem* could easily switch it.

Can we move the username, title, avatar box back to the left side of the posts?

I've never liked the view where that info is on the right, personally.
