Good. I was interested in that too. :)

Man, that smiley is creepy. But that was kind of a creepy statement, so I guess it fits.

I also thought it was pronounced "toke".
Me too, me too! I shall continue to pronounce it thusly, just because it makes sense.

I was a bit nervous, methinks.
If any of this was my fault (probably), I apologize! For what it's worth, I thought you did brilliantly. I believe my exact words to Wil were, "Janburglar meant business!"

Helen, I wanted to thank you for that comment in the interview but I couldn't make it work. I wasn't ignoring your comment and am glad to hear that you like it.

Comment in the interview?

Hello, English language, only true language of mine; you and I will love each other one day.

And hello again, Helen. What I meant was, you made a very kind comment in this thread that I wasn't ignoring, that I was going to try to address in the interview intro. But I was low on comments to work with in general, from either this thread or IMs, so it would have been a very lonely piece of "fan mail."

What, no questions about how Jan and Paul produce super adorable babies? :P
We'll save that for part 2.
Man, when Jan lets the walls down, she really lets 'em down.

FAQ

Is it safe to call you for a friendly chat?

Yes! I respect you all immensely and would never record conversations without your explicit permission. Plus, I don’t even know how to record without making you aware of the fact; you have to call my Google Voice number and then a creepy stalker lady will announce she’s recording. The technology exists to record in other ways but this is Alea-friendly, so this is what we go with.

Can I help?

Yes! (Man, I’m apparently excited about getting to answer some questions.) Volunteer yourself. If you’re too shy or too un-American/un-mainland Canadian, just listen and tell the others how awesome they are.

I can’t do more?

Ye…no! There are about 2 dozen active members and somewhere around 18 listeners, assuming people are only listening once. Part of the fun is reaching as wide an audience as possible and I feel that letting the audience help more starts to blur the lines too much. If there is interest in a different approach, I’m all ears and/or eyes after this series is over; I’d even be willing to pass the torch, so to speak, and let someone else lead the calls if they wanted.

How does this work, anyway?

As soon as you volunteer, I arrange for a week to do the interview but let you pick the day and time (after I get out of work). Ideally, it’s a Friday or Saturday call but earlier is okay, too. I do try to avoid Sundays, since Wil has to edit them for a Monday release but I’ll make exceptions when necessary and I’ve told Wil Tuesday releases are fine; I think he ignores that so he can blame me for his work conditions (you’re not getting a raise) but I blame him for everything else, so it’s fair.

As soon as a time and day are decided on, if you are an American, I give you my Google Voice number and try to get you the questions* ahead of time. You call, I go on rambling for 5 minutes about how nervous I am, how I hope I don’t make you nervous, how I think I’m past being nervous, which gets me going for about 2 more minutes on how the nerves returned, and then I suck it up and rush through the intro as best as I can.

If you aren’t American and have a Canadian phone number, I call you, then I call Wil and we do a conference call so he can record it; Google Voice is a strange beast but at least it’s still allowing for free calls up north. He doesn’t listen in on the actual interview as it is happening but he will have to listen eventually.

*Why do you ask everyone the same questions?

Because I’m lazy, unoriginal and didn’t think this through! Or because I actually like comparing the answers. Plus, I do try for a few unique questions each interview.

Didn’t you used to ramble more?

Still do! Thanks to the power of editing –and more importantly, a sense of needing to keep these under 20-30 minutes-most of this gets cut from the final. If you really want to hear how awkward my rambling can get, call me! Or ask for the unedited interviews. Or, and I like this one best, trust that Wil is doing you a favor removing it. And he will. The first thing to go, when the time is pushing 20 minutes for the interview proper, is me.

I want to do this but I don’t want you to have my phone number.

Well then, talk to the hand ‘cause the face aint listening. No, kidding. If the concern is that I’m technically a complete stranger to the majority of you, I’d just like to point out I’ve met 10 Pwebbers and only almost-killed Ed (his fault, not mine). Okay, okay, I may have also given someone else a bloody nose but I maintain their nose hit itself. If the concern is me calling you, the good news on that front is: I have a bit of a phone phobia! I don’t call anyone freely/on a whim, save my family, so if I don’t have a standing, pre-approved appointment or permission via text to call, I won’t. I would also be more than willing to erase the number from my “Calls Received” immediately after. I’m a pretty decent, cooperative person most days.

You know nothing about Google.

So sad yet so true.

Your intro music sucks.

Here's the thing; it's something like 10 seconds long. Just suck it up and suffer through it! (And yes, that is what she said)

These haven't been questions for a little bit now...don't you know the difference between statements and questions?

Sometimes.

I was trying to drum up one more volunteer, to even things out. And I was tired. It didn't work but things are a lot funnier when you're tired, so I had myself giggling at least. Plus, I didn't make up all but two of those, I think.

Spotlight On - Session Four - Mich - August 1, 2011

If you have problems with the link, an alternative.

Interesting factoids:

Session Four Call Time: ~49 minutes
Final Cut: ~22 minutes

Like with Jan, this was a first ever phone conversation between us.

I got another volunteer after all, so this will be a 10 session series (though I wouldn't turn down any volunteers, if anyone has a change of heart later). Thanks so much, volunteers and big thanks to Wil for doing all the hard work.

Nah, she's just not used to seeing men of my caliber without clothes.

I guess I'll just have to... ween 'er.

Apologies to anyone who ever lived, especially Jan and Paul.

I honestly haven't even thought about the right way to pronounce it in forever. I know how to pronounce Quim, but I honestly forgot in between the last two readings of Speaker.

Ol-YAH-do. Ol-YAH-do.

It's definately Ol-hah-do. Why? Because that's the way I've always pronounced it and I'm too stubborn/lazy to change.

Wait a second, fanmail for me? What?

ETA: Also there were so many things I forgot to bring up during my interview, like the fact I used Dogpile to find Fresco (and thus P-Web). Yes, kiddos, Dogpile.com. The original awesome search engine.

Bad joke about little Mich getting fanmail.

While Steph and I did flirt, in a manner of speaking, for a good 25 minutes or so (and Wil was a gentleman and left that out), that was my little shout-out to you guys who jokingly expected things to escalate past the boozing and nakedness. Let me just pretend/say that someone wrote to Mich's lower half and get that whole thing out of the way so we can tackle this interview like big kids. :P

I actually didn't sound as bad as I feared. I didn't think I'd be able to listen to it, but it didn't weird me out too much.

Wil edited that one mostly without my input, while I was out volunteering, and it was done shortly after I got home. I wouldn't have minded everyone hearing any of that (ETA but I didn't want to have him start up again after he finished).

Spotlight On - Session Six - Nomi - August 15, 2011

If you have problems with the link, an alternative.

Interesting factoids:

Session Six Call Time: ~39 minutes
Final Cut: ~30 minutes

We recorded this interview this morning. (For the person who I interviewed earlier, who Wil and I had every intention of airing today, I know you're confused but you provided a very solid interview and we felt we wouldn't be able to do it any justice if we rushed the editing. There's a good chance that will be a multi-parter next week, say, Monday and Wednesday or if necessary, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. If the rest of you pay attention to the interview, I make reference to the fact that I already interviewed said person.)

ETA: Steph, Wil actually put together some of the stuff that might have been blooperish from our conversation but it ran way-long (18 minutes), so I gave him some reference points to cut it down to maybe 3 or 4 minutes, tops. He then told me to get the okay from you and I never did. Totally my fault. Let me know if you want that info and we can add it. Also, my sincerest apologies. I messed up the link to yours last week and just noticed, so hopefully people knew to use the alternative. For those who didn't, it's fixed now, thanks to Wil.
