The "Spotlight On" Series

Postby Gravity Defier » Mon Jul 11, 2011 8:30 pm

Remember this thread? That's okay, I hardly remember it, either! But I am a persistent person and I don't let go of things quite so easily, especially when I knew there was something in that idea worth pursuing. So pursue, I did. And now I'm sharing the results of that with you and inviting you to be a part of it.

I'm not going to do set-up in text because I do most of that in the recording. Whether or not I did a good job of that remains to be seen but it is something I hope catches on after you learn more about how I ultimately approached this.

I'd like to keep this thread clean of requests so that it may focus on the content of the recordings and the posters themselves. And thanks to the magic of technology, I believe it can be done -for free!- with Canadians as well.

Alea, you could totally have your own radio show.

Woo! Pretty snazzy!

(I'm glad I wasn't the only one disappointed when nothing ever came of the previous attempt)
So don't go worrying about me

How about if I promise not to ask that question?

Thanks. That means a lot, especially since I know you listen to real podcasts all the time.

Alea, you could totally have your own radio show.

Pssh. It's an over-saturated market and most everyone else can string together a sentence much better. But thanks for the thought. :)

How very cool of you to say that. :)

Whoa. American accents, galore! For the record: this is the first time I've heard your voice at length, Alea, and you sound nothing like I imagined. :)

Also: FEEEAAARRRR ME!! FEAR ME with my pointy mod hat!!

I love it so much, and I would really happily be a subject in the future.

Though, to catch me on the phone it might be a lot of "Ginny, Mommy's on the phone."

Muh-LAH-gray is how I have always pronounced it. I have no idea if I made that up or got it from one of the Portuguese pronunciation guides in SftD or Xeno. Probably the former.

ETA: Just listened to it and I guess Alea pronounces it the same way as me. :)

And that was hysterical, you guys!

How are people pronouncing Milagre?
I got my pronunciation by likening it to Spanish. The word is slightly different -"milagro"- but it is pronounced "me-lah-grow", so I figured Milagre was similar. Though the Portuguese have strange accents to my ears, so who knows.

This is what the majority of your posts will be from now on, isn't it?

Also: currently listening! And I'm glad that I continue to imagine Alea's voice as she presented, like, a year ago. Aka correctly.

Yes.

Also: despite the fact that I've heard her voice a bajillion times in total, I almost always do a double-take because it's not exactly how I imagine her voice. Is this weird?

ETA: How are people pronouncing Milagre? I've always done more of a MILL-EGG-RA kind of thing.
I used to say "mil-AH-ger" or maybe 'gruh' in my head, and I have trouble not still seeing it as that. But I think I started doing that before I knew any Spanish.

Also, this was really fun! I don't even think I could even put my finger on why, but I liked listening to it.

I don't want to give too much text commentary on any of these so here's the link:

Spotlight On - Session Two - Fred - July 18, 2011

If you experience issues with the link, an alternative.

Questions and comments for our guests are encouraged! For as long as we have volunteers, we're going to aim for Monday updates.

And some factoids:

Session One Call Time: ~25 minutes
Final Cut: ~15 Minutes

Session Two Call Time: ~49 minutes (46 recorded)
Final Cut: ~19 Minutes

As for volunteers, I have an opening for the week of the 25th-31st, for air on August 1st [ETA: Spot filled] and the week of the 1st-7th, for airing on the 8th [ETA2: Spot filled]. If you're interested, send a PM. If you're unsure but interested in what the process is like, as a determining factor, I'm happy to answer questions via PM. :)

Thanks to Wil for editing, of course.

I didn't mean it that way!

Oh man, Fred, we just got schooled by Ed and Garfield. The funny thing is, a part that got cut was me telling Fred those boys should have taken a geography class...but Garfield had that part covered. Curses.

Thanks to the two awesome volunteers, who have volunteered to share their awesomeness. (Note to self: threatening a stutter works; use more often) We can now expect 4 more of these, since I already had one lined up for next week and three weeks from now.

Juuuuuust now listening to these.

Interesting factoids:

This is the first one I will not have listened to, either in rough cuts or final cut, before posting it.

Session Three Call Time: ~46 minutes (~44 recorded) - I thought both numbers were higher
Final Cut: ~27 minutes

Spotlight On - Session Three - Jan - July 25, 2011

If you have trouble with that, here's an alternative.

Helen, I wanted to thank you for that comment in the interview but I couldn't make it work. I wasn't ignoring your comment and am glad to hear that you like it.

Jeff, that is just about the best compliment ever. I hoped, above all else, that people would learn something about the interviewees.

No more comments from me, despite wanting to mention more than I ever end up doing.

Yay! I love these. They are especially great for nights of insomnia.

I'm not really scared of you Jan, but if I were it would totally be in a Dumbledore way and not a Voldemort one.
