Question about the piggies reproduction, EXPERTS NEEDED

I recently finished xenocide, and a question about how the piggies reproduce came to me: if they can only enter the third life by being dismembered and planted, and they are cut using knives that are given to them by trees, WHERE DID THE FIRST KNIFE COME FROM? Also, how wa the first piggy ever "planted?" did they just happen to carve one up and it happened to grow a tree, so they kept doing it, and eventually learned to talk to the trees? Am i missing something..
