What are you afraid of?

Recently, I've noticed that Pweb seems a lot less dead when you can see that around half of those "Guests" who are on at any given time are actually hidden Pwebbers. When did we all become anonymous cowards? I realize some have a good reason to stay hidden and that's fine, but it seems like many others are just hidden for the sake of being sneaky. I'm guilty of it as well and only in the past few weeks have I had a semi-decent excuse for it.

Note, I'm not trying to force anyone to change if they don't want to. If you're hidden and you wish to remain hidden, that's fine. It's just something I noticed when Jan gave me my mod hat and seems like a good thing to discuss. I've also changed my settings so I'm no longer hidden and dare others to do the same.

There. Unhidden. I'm not sure why I had it set that way in the first place.

Assuming you are speaking of being "hidden" (logged in but anonymous) vs being a "guest" (not logged in, and thus anonymous): late September, early October of 2003, roughly, for me. I remember who pushed me to it and what they said that made me go that route. It was meant to be completely innocent but being the oversensitive goob that I am, I took it as teasing and not the friendly kind, even though that's all it was.

What gets me is I've now pushed at least one person into going that route and it's a pretty lousy feeling.

I left Petrie unhidden but I couldn't tell you why that one and not G D. Sorry to say, I don't think I'll bring G D out of hiding, even though I get a tad annoyed with everyone else hiding. Hypocrite, here. *grin*

Do people get hurt that some of us use the hidden setting that was available to all?

No, not really. Some of us will complain anyway, though, since we're a bunch of crotchety old farts who aren't happy unless we can complain about something.

Speaking of complaining, it's going to be hard for me to not confuse you with a certain someone's husband who needs to post more himself. :P

As for the hidden online status thing, I just thought it was interesting and worthy of discussion.

I just wanted to add that, while I don't hide my online status, I don't even bother to log in until I post, and then I log right back out again. Same thing as hiding, really.

I think he was referring to getting Brian mixed up with eggbalancer, steph's Brian.

Ahhh, that makes more sense. I thought for some reason it was me and Caspian he was getting confused about, which made no sense at all.

Yes, not one in the same.
