Another board is doing a The Dark is Rising Christmas re-read. I'm participating (though I forgot it started today, what with working a ten hour day shift, I'm out of sorts, date wise) but I'm getting this posted just under the gun.

The idea is to read the book more or less on the days the chapters take place, starting today, Dec, 20th.

Here's the schedule:

20th Dec - Midwinter's Eve
21st Dec - Midwinter Day, The Sign-Seeker
23rd Dec - The Walker on the Old Way
24th Dec - Christmas Eve, The Book of Gramarye, Betrayal
25th Dec - Christmas Day
[Sometime in between - The Coming of the Cold]
5th Jan (Twelfth Night Eve) - The King of Fire and Water, The Hunt Rides
6th Jan (Twelfth Night) - The Joining of the Signs

And I like the idea of doing the Coming of the Cold on New Year's Eve or Day. :)

I really wish I'd seen this on the 21st. Man. I totally would have joined in! I'm sorry, Adam!

I really did want to do this, but apparently "The Dark is Rising" is the second book in a series? Since I've never read any of the series, I didn't want to read the second book first, and I didn't have enough time to read the first book before. So, uh, next year... more warning. :D

I read Dark is Rising first and had no problem with following the chronology of the rest of the series. In fact, it has been so long I can't even remember the order I read them in (though I do remember failing a computerized reading quiz on one of the ones I did not like in 4th grade, LOL).

No, really, you do want to start with the second book. The first one sucks and is superfluous to the series.
