I saw the movie A Big Year yesterday because, well, it's about competitive birdwatching
Please explain "competitive birdwatching"? Is it just "who finds the birds the fastest" or ... ?

A Big Year is an informal competition among birders to see who can see or hear the largest number of species of birds within a single calendar year and within a specific geographical area. I had never heard of it until this movie but I'm new to birding. The movie is based on a book which is based on a true story. I'll probably read the book, it has good reviews.

Wow, another double post.

Okay, I need help from anyone who has bought a house. We are in the very early stages of considering buying a house. It would technically be our first house. We currently own a mobile home and have a "personal loan" on it. It isn't considered a real mortgage but it's a hefty loan, which is almost half paid off. If we sell the mobile home for anywhere close to what we paid, we will have about $15-20k for a down payment on a house.

The thing that we are confused about is how you go about selling the place you are living in and looking to buy a new place, while not having the money to put down on a new house until you sell your current place. Obviously people do this everyday, so it can't be that difficult but I'm not sure what the answer is. So, help?

I have heard of people putting offers on a house, doing all the paper work with banks and the like pending the sale of the house they are in. So if is somehow doesn't sell you aren't out anything, or strapped down to payments you cant afford.... You might be able to ask a real estate agent about it.

My inlaws and I looked at a wonderful house a few weeks about and the owners said they had another house lined up pending the sale of their current one.

If anyone is bored and wants to do a little google hunting, I've got the project for you!

I'm looking for a map of Boston to frame and hang in my apartment. I'd like it to be fairly large--poster-sized. I would consider spending up to $50, but would prefer that the price be lower, rather than higher.

I'm open to just about any style of map. Vintage, modern, hand-drawn, painted, stylized, whatever. I am not interested in photographs. I'd also like the focus of the map to be specifically on the city of Boston, though maps that include the surrounding areas are fine.

So, if you love Etsy or Amazon or your local art dealer or whatever, and you think you can find a map worthy of my walls, let's see it!

I'm not even sure how to pose this question, due to the variables, but generally speaking, how dangerous is it to walk for about a mile (about 10-15 minutes' walk in fair weather) in the middle of the snowy winter?

I guess it depends on how cold it is, I've gone on plenty of long walks in the snow. You just have to be dressed accordingly!

Shoot from the hip answer, so other people can feel free to chime in. It'd say generally not dangerous. That's assuming it's not a blizzard or whiteout conditions, not dangerously low frostbite temperatures, and that you are wearing appropriate clothing.

Is this about the possibility of walking in Chicago? *hopes*

I don't know anything new; my anxiousness while I wait has led to me looking into possibilities of it happening, which is quite dumb, since it's getting my hopes up.

This! Warm hat, good boots, mittens, and a good warm coat, and you can walk as long as you want! And possibly some thermal underwear. Rei spends a lot of winter using longjohns, because he's from a warmer climate than I am and less used to cold legs. Or maybe his get actually colder, who knows? Anyway, dress right and you can walk as long as you want!

Ooh, glad to hear so many people confirm this. Jan mentioned some wool-lined tights or something like that, so I started looking into those a bit. They sound like something I would want to help keep warm.

The weather channel (type places) usually tell you when it's actually dangerous to be outside for extended periods. This is when it's like in the single digits or below, usually with additional strong winds. Those times are fairly rare (a few days a winter). Other than that, you'll be fine as long as you're dressed for it.

I'd like to weigh in, but we don't really have days that are cold enough to matter.

Pretty much what everyone else said. Walking in snowy winters isn't bad at all as long as you have gloves, a hat, and good shoes. The only times walking in the winter sucks is when there is an awful wind chill (or any high winds at all) or ice. You'll want boots with good traction for that weather, and very waterproof ones if they get wet snow. Tights might be a good idea, especially if it's really cold, but you're kind of stuck wearing them the whole day, which can get rather hot. I've found that mainly only the front of my thighs get cold, where the jeans are tight and the cold air is attacking head on.

Walking is single digits or below can be hard on the lungs, but isn't that bad unless there is wind. Just bundle up extra warm and have something to cover your face. Your snot may freeze. And gloves. One can never go wrong with gloves.

I got confused when you started talking about single-digit temperatures being dangerous, but then I realised you're all using an outdated grading system. :D

I'm kind of a wimp; I wear pants all year long indoors and I wear a hoodie all year long at work. I don't think this would be a problem.

Hey Syphon, last semester I had a Psychology and Law class that let me access some law database that my college lawschool uses. Academic Lexis Nexis? Something like that.

I was wondering if there are any interesting/landmark/whatever court cases you can think of that I should look up (for fun!). When I get back to the Emory network and can use their database of court cases.

Any random ones you can think of would be appreciated.

Okay, this is a totally random question, but I have a cold and this is where my thoughts wander.

What is the job interview protocol for when one has a cold? Do you reschedule? Does it make you seem unreliable if you do? Do you show up and try to avoid sniffling? Do you bring a tissue? Do you shake hands, or is that gross? Can you decline to shake hands due to your illness, or is that just weird?

I would go, decline to shake hands and tell them, "Sorry, I'm just getting over a little cold and don't want to get you sick." Yes, bring a tissue but also take some cold medicine ahead of time to minimize any sniffling if possible.

It got my age range & gender right, but thinks I am exclusively interested in Computers/Software & Intellectual Property law. Which is kind of random.

WHAT

Edit: Actually using this thread... for syphon or any others with legal knowledge:

I've seen many things over the years with disclaimers like "this does not constitute legal advice" or I've had law students say that they can provide advice on things, but not... like "official" legal advice or something. What is the trouble you get in if you give "legal advice" before you pass the bar? What law is dealing with this?

It's unauthorized practice of law, which is usually a felony.

I guess my confusion is about when/why such notices are necessary? I don't usually tell my friends "hey, you should probably pay that parking ticket, but this doesn't constitute legal advice".

The general rule of thumb is that the practice of law includes "the giving of such advice or rendition of such service requires the use of any degree of legal knowledge or skill" to a third party. Which is pretty broad and all-encompassing.

So, engaging in any activities that fall under that broad category without a license (or a provisional license) is a very bad idea. I suspect the disclaimers they give also serve to somewhat protect them from establishing an attorney-client relationship and/or claims of malpractice. Even people licensed to practice will sometimes give the same disclaimer for that reason, which I think is dumb because the only real protection is to not provide the advice at all.

So, my knowledgeable friends, why do books sometimes have those rough, irregular page edges? Is it just a stylistic thing, or what?
