Hi Pweb,

Thread is for exactly what the title says. You could probably figure it out via google, but you don't feel like googling or it's not really a good google question or the question just occurred to you while you were browsing pweb.

Alright, there is a word that has been at the tip of my brain all freaking morning and I can't remember what it is. It's a literary device where you use a bunch of similar consonant sounds. The beautiful bird blithely began bobbing his head in the bubbling brook. I seem to remember that when you're looking at similar vowel sounds in a row it's called assonance, but I'm not even sure of that anymore. It's driving me batty. Help. I know that I know this word, damnit!

There's also consonance, where the repeated sound doesn't have to be at the beginning of the word. But I like alliteration better.

Neat idea. I actually have a question!

I'm taking an iPhone programming class because, well, it's fun and I needed the credits. Next week I need to submit a final project proposal but I can't actually think of a final project. It needs to be somewhat complex, but not overly so. So, do any of you have any good ideas? :D

I can't think of anything specific, but the best iPhone software, much like the best Mac software is complex on the inside so it can be deceptively simple on the outside. Try to think of a task you perform repeatedly on your iPhone that could be done better then write a program that does it your way. I don't have an iPhone myself so I can't really be any more help than that. (I'm perfectly happy with my simple Nokia clam shell.)

Sorry, I just didn't know what "iPhone programming" meant, whether it was an app, or something else.

I don't have much experience with apps, so I don't know what exists, but...

Something that linked together all of the blogs I read with how they connect to each other. Who links to whom, who's following who on twitter, who is part of the same organizations of bloggers, etc. I read lots of Mommy Blogs and sometimes it feels like they all know each other, but I'm not sure how they all connect. I'd like to.

Is that something an app could do? I have no idea.

I love the idea of GPS games...

How about a Iphone assassin game? The game would keep track of your location and send you a notification if you got near another person also playing the game. The person that is able to "shoot" or take a picture of the other player gets a kill/points/mad skills.

Real-life snakes. Your iphone keeps track of where you have walked, projecting a tail behind you. You would then try to cut off other people playing the game without getting cut off your self or running over your own tail. For every kill, your tail would grow longer.

If you end up using either idea, u owe me a bear.

And a second question in a row, can someone tell me in unadorned, non-partisan terms what happened as a result of this recent US election? (Also, who/what was getting elected, because geez you guys have a lot of elections.)

Thanks for the ideas, guys! I'll have to see what I can come up with.

Members of our House of Representatives are elected every two years. Members of our Senate are elected every six years (and the elections are staggered so that 1/3 are elected every two years). This year, there were 37 Senate seats up for grabs; Republicans snagged 24 of them.

Prior to the election, the U.S. Congress makeup was as follows:
House of Representatives: 255 Democrats, 178 Republicans.
Senate: 59 Democrats, 41 Republicans.

The next Congress' (whose term begins in January) will be as follows:
House of Representatives: 188 Democrats, 239 Republicans (there are 8 races that are still too close to call).
Senate: 53 Democrats, 47 Republicans.

The eight races still too close to call--
California 11: Democrat is leading by 441 votes.
California 20: Republican is leading by 1091 votes.
Illinois 8: Republican is leading by 553 votes.
Kentucky 6: Democrat is leading by 600 votes.
New York 25: Republican is leading by 659 votes.
Texas 27: Republican is leading by 799 votes.
Virginia 11: Democrat is leading by 920 votes.
Washington 2: Democrat is leading by 3841 votes.

Basically, the House of Representatives is now controlled by Republicans, while the Senate and the Presidency are still controlled by Democrats, which means that neither party has the power to unilaterally ram anything through.

Also, there were 37 races for state governors. 11 Democrats won, 23 Republicans won, 1 Independent won, and 2 races are still too close to call (and Democrats are leading in both of those races).
Step softly; a dream lies buried here.

Thanks for the ideas. I really like that GPS based snake game idea, but it's far too big of an undertaking to use as a final project. On top of this, the school isn't giving us the ability to transfer games over to an actual iPhone/iPod Touch, and as such we are left with using the much simpler iPhone simulator on the computer where we lose much of the functionality like accelerometer, multitouch, GPS, etc. I'm still considering what to do, but it IS due on Sunday so I need to make up my mind fast. The best option I have at the moment is a sort of "Trip Calculator" app.

I have another question though: Is it better to go on a vacation with only cash, or perhaps keep less cash on you and better to transfer money over to a checking account and use the debit card everywhere?

I usually only take enough cash to cover incidentals for places that don't take credit cards (usually I bring $40-60 or so). The rest I use my debit/credit card for.

I always say it seems like the only thing the iPhone can't do is wipe your ass for you. So...
I'd go with this, you can have the screen display two sheets of TP, you can pick various softnesses, patterns, etc and then when you run your finger along the screen it scrolls to the next two 'clean' sheets of TP. The idea, is that if you were to actually wipe your ass with your iphone, the motion/action of wiping would do the same thing and scroll to new 'clean' sheets of TP.
So, Lone Star, now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb.

It was sparkie_adams until about a week ago.

Im trying phase out that old screen name. I came up with it when I was about 14 years old, I'm now 27. Lol, I needed to put my email on my resume, and sparkie_adams was just plain silly.

So I created a new email. Luckily google is pretty cool about letting me create a second gmail account and have them linked together. Its actually pretty sweet, emails sent to either email now go to the same place.

EDIT: PS, funny pic.

Hijacking a bit...

So my grandparents are visiting, and we found some cool old coins in a box they brought. Any ideas how to look up the value of old international coins? Everything I've googled has not been very helpfull...

Your local public library will really likely have a couple of reference books on the subject. You might have to bring a couple of the coins with you, because you might not be able to take the book out.

iTeePee (Name is a Work In Progress)

They always say that the only thing the iPhone can’t do is wipe your bum for you. Well, now it can! With the iTeePee, you can bring up a virtual roll of toilet paper and literally use it to clean up after yourself in the bathroom *!

* Not recommended for sanitary reasons. Do not flush iPhone.

Features and Functionality
• Scroll through virtual rolls of toilet paper with a flick of your finger
• Choose the pattern of the toilet paper
• Place a photo on the toilet paper using the camera or from your gallery
• “Flush” to exit the program, with sound!

I'm still thinking of what else I can add. I don't think it is quite complex enough yet. Any other ideas that can be added to it? :P
