So, who here's good with computers?

Postby CezeN » Wed Jun 16, 2010 10:35 am

Why I ask? My computer screen has been tinting blue, randomly, for some reason - starting about three days ago.

It's usuable if you turn down some of the stuff on the monitor controls, but otherwise, it's near impossible to see stuff.

Basic research says that it should be a monitor problem or a video card problem.

However, whenever the screen tints blue, I jiggle the wires in the back of the monitor a couple of times, and it'll randomly jump back to blue.

Does that mean it's more likely a cable problem?
And anyonelse had this problem, before, or has any advice?

Have you tested the monitor on a different computer or tested your computer with a different monitor?

Sounds like a cabling problem to me. I've seen exactly this sort of issue come up numerous times when using a VGA monitor cable; if one of the wires in the cable is damaged, it can do exactly that. Usually, though, it's caused by the connector not being secured to the back of the computer (those 2 screws are surprisingly useful).

fixed

Syphon, we don't have another monitor to try. However, the one we have is pretty old.

Thanks DaPyrox. I'll try this connector thing first, assuming I can spot the right cable thing as the connector.

Here are the cables in the back of my monitor:

I couldn't see any screws, and then couldn't figure out anything that could be changed or adjusted significantly.

Well, i don't recognise the white wire, but that one should be the one carrying the video signal (the black one is the power chord). Plug it tighter, also try plugging it tighter to the pc. Or if you can get hold of a different wire altogether, try with another.

The screws dap says are for the vga wire, with a distinctive blue head:

They have a couple of screws that help plugging them real tight. I don't recognise which wire is the one your monitor uses, though.

It looks like his monitor is pretty old, back before VGA cables didn't come pre-attached. That can be a problem if he's not computer-hardware literate and is trying to fix it himself, because it's not as easy as "screw it in harder."

buck's solution is looking a little more realistic than it did at first.

If it's jiggling the cables near the monitor that fixes the issue, I'd suggest it's time to look for a new monitor. Trying to repair those built-on cables is a pain. I would check the "computer" end of the cable to make sure it is in fact fully connected to the computer (and check the aforementioned screws) before jumping to a replacement, though.

This has less to do with computers, but I'm doing this New Record thing for college and I have to submit a picture, but it says:
Please use the following specifications when submitting your picture:

Resolution should be at least 225 dpi
Image file format should be TIF, EPS, JPG, or GIF.
File name should not have any spaces and should not include apostrophes, commas, forward or backward slashes.(smithjohn.tif)
Image should be at least 85 x 117 pixels or 1 3/16 x 1 5/8 inches.
Image should be smaller than 5 MB.
Now, I neither know how to check the resolution of my photobucket pictures or pictures on my computer.

But more importantly, it says the file name shouldn't have forward or backward slashes.

How is that possible?
Pretty much every internet link has slashes....
How would I do that?

They said the file name should not have slashes. Using their example, they want "smithjohn.tif" instead of "smith/john.tif" And if you open your picture in Paint, you can see resolution under Image -> Attributes (ctrl e).

Oh yeah, I do have paint, just haven't used it ever.

Maybe because the only way I can find it is by using the search function.

Thanks Sonnikku, but I already submitted it.

I figured if he owned either of those (particularly Linux), he wouldn't be asking the question(s) he was.
