Sure you can turn it off. From the home screen, go to Menu -> Settings -> Reading Options and then turn the Public Notes slider to 'Off'.

Also, if you want to just see notes by a certain person you can set that up on the Kindle site, I think.

I'm about 90% sure that I'm buying a Kindle Fire on Saturday.

(I already have a DX, which I'll continue to use for reading.)

Mich (and anyone else with the Fire), how do you like it?

It works decently well as a hobbled-Android device, I can read on it for hours without the usual problems I get with monitors (although that might just by psychological), and I constantly want to rootkit it but don't ever feel the drive.

How's that for a summary?

Just out of curiosity:

Are Kobo e-readers at all common or well known in the States? I know for the most part it's all about the Kindle, but here in Canada Kobo e-readers (Kobo inc. being based in Toronto and owned by our largest book retailer, Indigo/Chapters) has 36% of the e-reader market to Kindle's 25% according to wikipedia (which cites a source I'm not familiar with).

I was just wondering if Kobo enjoyed any kind of popularity outside of its homeland.

To be honest, I'd never heard of the Kobo until you mentioned it in here earlier. I am familiar with Indigo/Chapters, though.

I've heard of Kobo, but haven't seen one in person (I've only seen a couple of Kindles in person, actually). I chalk it up to the fact that I follow tech blogs like Engadget and Gizmodo. I think they are a lot less popular than Kindle and Nook.

That's pretty much what I figured. It's a shame because Kobo has a nice line of e-readers. The more I use mine the more I love it, but I guess you Kindle users feel the same way.

Am I correct in understanding that Kindles only read the mobi format (and other basic formats like pdf and txt) but not epub? In practice that probably doesn't matter since most users will have no problem buying all their books from amazon, but epub is actually a more universal format, I believe. But I suppose it's also a moot point since programs like Calibre allow you to convert formats.

The only place I've actually seen Kobo sold is Best Buy. I know that they were partnered with Borders (who went bankrupt), so that could why their U.S. market share is so low. It doesn't help that the Kobo is the same price as the Kindle.

Yes, you're right that Kindle only reads .mobi and things like .pdf and .txt. (The Fire reads .epub, but none of the others do.)

I've never had a problem with .mobi not being the more "universal" format. Amazon usually has what I want and usually for much cheaper than anywhere else. I think I've bought one book in a non-mobi format because either Amazon didn't have it or it was more expensive. And Calibre worked just fine. (Calibre also works great for my work stuff, plus I can have case law sent directly to my Kindle.)

Erotic books popular with e-readers

I suppose one advantage of e-readers is that you can be more discreet about what you're reading.

I'm thinking of breaking down and getting a Kindle. Specifically, a Paperwhite. Has anyone seen this model in person?

Oh, I did end up ordering a Paperwhite Kindle but it doesn't get here until 12/24!

Elvis, I usually look through the "currently reading" thread for ideas.
