LOL I guess that's what I get for not responding when you mentioned it in Bob

I know it's broken, I just don't have any idea how to get to that photobucket account anymore, much less any good avatars to use

There's an idea, we'll make this a thread to decide what my future avatar is.

Because nobody expects the spanish inquisition!

Our chief weapon is surprise! surprise and fear... fear and surprise....
Our two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency....
Our *three* weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency...and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope....
Our *four*...no... *Amongst* our weapons.... Amongst our weaponry...are such elements as fear, surprise.... I'll come in again.

NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! ...Amongst our weaponry are such diverse elements as: fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope, and nice red uniforms - Oh damn!

There's too many new threads as it is. How the hell am I supposed to continue ignoring this place if you people keeping making and posting in new threads?

Let's skip the thread this time and just use one of these instead:

Tha kirby is much slower than I remember, though.
That's because i was messing with the animation shop 2, to join leekspin with running kirby into a single gif. Had i put them separately in the sig, they would appear vertically instead of horizontally, and that would have cause a "divide by cucumber error". And we do not want that.

So, which gif gets the axe? yeah i think that 3 animated gifs is a bit too much XD

Actually, I'm a little impressed. You may have noticed we're quite community-focused here. Small courtesies like that are really appreciated. We're not just "people on the internets," at least, not to those who stick around for any length of time. We call each other, have meet-ups, send gifts and cards to each other, even date and get married ( ). Sure, we've got some new folks who haven't started being a part of that yet, but there's no reason they can't be, and being nice just because is a good way to start.

I guess I'm unimpressed because I feel that it is wrong to conform to people's standards.(This is of course not the same as conforming to rules and obligations)
An avatar is supposed to be a personal expression of you, what you're feeling, or whatever you want. Whatever reason you want it.

The fact that he'd change that uniqueness, his personal choice, to look better in someone else's eye isn't something I'd admire. Though, mostly because I'm not the type to stuff my individuality and give in to the masses, for internetsocial acceptance.

Speaking of creepy avatars, where's Jebus? Did he get banned again, or does he just hate us?

So, you actually had a real, genuine reason for having your avatar - and then threw it away because it hadn't yet had the affect you intended, but mostly because someonelse said they didn't like it?

Even if it doesn't seem to be having the effect, let your mind get used to it, used to looking at it and facing your fear, and maybe you'll gradually find that you feel your phobia less and less.

One person suggesting that perhaps the "face" you present leads to readings of your words that you didn't intend is "giving into the masses"? Actually, from a purely pragmatic standpoint, it's good sense to change it at that point. If you aren't having the effect you want, changing in order to achieve that effect is good communication. Especially if you don't even like the thing you put up.

*shrug* There's lots of ways to be individual. And hey, no judgement in this, but if you don't want to be part of the "internetsocial" life here, that's your loss.

I disagree. I don't think any bias should be any factor, but the actual words themselves should be considered.
Especially if the bias can't be justified.

Also, at the point I was talking about myself, not really the situation.

And again, I wasn't talking in particular about the community. More about my nature in general. I don't actually not want to be apart of here, but at the same time it's not the opposite way.
However, if someone told me that they'd look at my words differently because of my own personal expression, I wouldn't care one bit. (That's like looking at someone speaking sense[not saying I speak sense though], and saying you aren't gonna even listen to him because his image isn't pleasing to your eyes. His image and his words are completely unrelated.)
Especially since avis and siggies are the main way people express their individuality or whatever they want to express.

Image and words are NOT unrelated. They go together in a very automatic and natural way. Trying to keep the image from affecting how you read the words takes an incredible amount of mental effort, if it can be done at all. Particularly for new members, when we don't have any context other than their words and avatar. Because seeing that image while reading the words is just an automatic process. We see the image before the words soak in. Also, the areas of the brain the images and the words are going to have very different functions. The image gets precedence. And, since in the case of the clown it's an ambiguous image associated with creepiness, it's going to set the amygdala (flight/fight/freeze center) on alert, because that's the amygdala's job. It's the fastest and most primal part of the brain. So, such an image is going to make things seem negative, unless we have enough positive experience with the poster to override it. That's just how the human brain works. The printed words are going to the rational part of the brain, which does not have nearly the weight with the emotional systems as that primal part does.

We can override it, but it takes motivation, context, and competing positive experiences to do so.

(For example, I find your avatar seriously disgusting, CezeN. But it doesn't affect my reading of your posts nearly to the degree it would if you hadn't posted here a while before adopting it. Because, if it were my first experience with you, my brain wouldn't have a "CezeN" shortcut it could go to when trying to figure out who the voice is behind the words, and would only have the avatar's clues.)

There is literally a TON of literature about how appearances affect people's judgement in real life. Appearance has an effect. If you want to challenge that it doesn't, I will literally bury you in citations. It's natural that our built-in gift for trying to figure people out via mental shortcuts is going to apply to internet avatars as well.

Should people work this way? I don't know. What I know is that they do work this way.

Should that cause other people to change their behavior? It depends on what their goals are. If CrazyTom's goals are to get us to like him and be part of the community, then, yes, changing the avatar to something less creepy is probably a smart move. If the goal is to stand out as an individual and keep everyone else on edge, then it probably doesn't make a lot of sense.
There's another home somewhere,
There's another glimpse of sky...
There's another way to lean
into the wind, unafraid.
There's another life out there...
