at around 6" of snow since yesterday and going to get another 14" tonight. which is pretty cool. i dig snow.

Same here, except the 6" was today and the 14" is coming tomorrow.

so now the wind is gusting up to 50 mph. it is really just awesome out there. its a white out so there's times where i can't see across my street because the snows blowing around. just cool as hell.

so far out my front door there's a few places where i can see sidewalk, but the rest is about 2 foot deep cuz apparently my front yard is one big snowdrift. i'm going to guess that my garage has about 4 foot of snow in front of it.

i love this stuff. nothing makes me happier than a big ol' snow storm. rain too. i prefer it to warm sunny days.

and there's just something about the wind howling and rattling my windows that i find relaxing for some reason. and i find it neat that when it snows, pitch black night actually has more of a pinkish orange glow. but that's probably just the town's lights reflecting back down on us.

so yeah, i'm positively buoyant.

So, that was my apartment last night. NOT relaxing at all... granted, that was also possibly because it caused 2 grumpy kitties and a freaked out weenie dog.

0 degrees fahrenheit. Which is the high today.

At first I just saw the '0 degrees' and thought, "Oh that's not bad at all!"

And then I saw the 'fahrenheit'.

The snow system has moved north to us now, we're getting 3-6 inches in the next 24 hours. Yay.

So I get my first snow day in years. Of course it falls on the "turnaround" day between semesters, when there aren't any classes and the only thing I would have had to do is prep, which I will now have to do less effectively from home.

On the bright side, I'm still in bed.

Yeah, it's pretty bad. I AM jealous of all the snow that Joshy's getting though. We've had a pretty wimpy snow winter. The mountains have been pounded with snow, though, so at least we won't be in drought this summer.

Schools are all out for cold again today. I don't think school has EVER been out (in colorado) for just cold before.

Why would anyone close scools for cold. I don't know about you guys, but our classes are held in doors.

We had schools delayed because it was -15F a few weeks ago and they couldn't get the buses started. That's a pretty good reason.

I think they are worried about kids who have to walk to and wait at the bus stop. Especially if the buses are late because of start issues and ice, the kids can be out there for a long time.

Here, if anything they just cancel buses. Actual school closures have become very rare.

Yeah. They've cancelled school or 3 days because the roads are bad. My team needs practice for the drill meet and nobody's parents wants to drive them anywhere...wimps.

it's blown around so much no way to know how much we got. still blowing but not snowing anymore. i think only 15 people made it in to work today our of over a hundred. they gave us t-shirts for coming in.

anyway, so much fun driving my jeep in this stuff. i love having a vehicle that you have to force into going out of control. and there's nobody on the roads so i can play around all i want. i think i was driving sideways for a full block.

they cut the power back, but not completely. so lights seem brown more than yellow or white. everything is dim but flickers less than candles.

I've never experienced a planned brownout here in upstate NY. I've only experienced a brownout when there is a car accident or something similar that brings a power line down. It's usually very temporary.

Some cities are doing brownouts, some are doing 40 minute blackouts. So far I've had one brownout in my apartment, though the restaurant I went to for lunch had a blackout. My fiance's news station had a blackout during their noon-time show (luckily they have a generator to keep them on the air.)

I'm not sure how they're deciding who gets a brownout and who gets a blackout.

Also, it gets REALLY COLD when the power goes down.

I'm a bit disappointed. I moved to the Mid West and everyone's all "Be prepared, amateur! Our winters are SERIOUS."

Now, I'll give Minnesota this: it's much colder, ok, much, MUCH colder than I'm used to* (or comfortable with*). But the snow? Psh.

The East Coast is getting SLAMMED right now. As is most of the Mid West (Chicago, etc). But Minnesota? Not worth batting an eyelash.

Also, today's snowstorm wasn't even that bad when all was said and done. The general consensus seems to be that closing schools was an overreaction based on the hype. Do all meteorologists suck or is it just the ones around here?

They all suck! And it isn't fair! They make a really bad predicition and everyone's all "oh, you can't predict the weather!"

But pretty much any other profession gets called out all the time on real or imagined incompetence.

To be fair, I suppose weather forecasts are one of those things that you only really notice and remember when they're wrong.

My brother was just in Idaho visiting inlaws and when he came home, he declared, "Our meteorologists are GENIUSES." I guess the meteorologists out there were wrong about every storm that they got (or did not get) during the three weeks he was there. Our guys are actually pretty darn good. I have heard that the Hudson Valley is a very challenging and interesting weather area, so maybe we get the good ones because of that.

give it time. our midwest winters are usually a cycle. some years we get very little, and other years we get twice what they're getting in the east.

It was -14f this morning around 8 when I checked. And the heaters at work are broken, so the ambient temperature was around 45f.

My fingers have been so cold today I didn't even dare scratch my nose. Just accidentally brushing my skin while tugging my shirt down is like icicles touching me. It's warmed up to 3f tonight. I'm freaking cold.

I'm just thankful it hasn't snowed today.

Holy crap I never thought I'd be glad to live in Cali. its freaking sunny here and mildly cool. And yet if you try to swim here you freeze to death.

I will be pissed if the weather sucks when I move back to Texas, and I'll be really miffed when it gets hot over there if I get heat sickness again.

...except it seems to be a bit of an overreaction to the storm that didn't come. Sure there's 10" of new snow, but it's not really stormy.

It's 21F in Tucson, feels like 8F...most of the city is without water at the moment because all their pipes are frozen. Meanwhile, here at the homestead, it's 38F, feels like 33F. Which means I get to layer again on my way to work. At least my fingers thawed out yesterday during the ride, after 2 or 3 miles.

It was so dead (at work) yesterday, too, with the exception of all the snowbirds running around.
