No. I made a deliberate choice this year to embrace football, so I'm noticing it everywhere. (Considering the upswing in 8-12 year old boys I've been working with, I think the choice has MORE than paid off.)

But, up till now, I've barely been aware of it. And I grew up in Texas, for heaven's sake! I mean, sure, I've been to superbowl parties, but that's more for the food and company than the game. In short, if you want the cultural experience of American football fandom, it's there. But if not, no worries. Just try not to drive near any colliseums on game day and you'll have no problem ignoring it.

So I think it is official that Winter is now longer my favorite season. Snow is/was a big part of the reason. 2 feet of snow over the weekend. And nothing. I wasn't happy. I didn't play in it. Wasn't annoyed by it, but simply didn't enjoy it. I am kind of distraught over this.

(Of course, some people might not consider it too cold id you're in the way north) It's been in the teens/single digits here, with wind chills in the negatives sometimes. and I thought I liked Winter... I was mistaken. I want to see and feel some sunshine right about now.

After two weeks of ranging between -5F and 15F, it's finally up to 31F and it's even supposed to get up to the high 30s later this week. Maybe all this snow will finally melt.

ETA: I'm not looking forward to the predictions that this is going to be the coldest winter in twenty-five years. The last time they predicted that we were still getting snow in April.

As long as I can function, I don't care what the temperatures are. However, they are real low. My hands have seemed to freeze up when I left them out in the cold, even for just 5 minutes. I hope it warms up, but don't want the sun to go back to rising at 8-9 PM. I lose my sleep pattern that way, and sleep way too late when the sun sets at 9 PM.

It's definitely real. Britain is currently s***** itself over a lack of grit, lack of snowplows, complete inability to be sensible, and lack of decent insulation.

For example, you'd think that driving along - as in ON - a semi-frozen canal might be a bad idea. Or going mountain climbing the day after you have a freezing rain downpour. Or not going outside to garden (lady, your plants are DEAD, don't bother!). But no. The famed stiff-upper-lip of England can't handle a bit of cold weather.

To be fair this almost never happens here so natural selection hasn't taken care of the snow-stupid in quite the same way as it might have elsewhere.

And it's not all tales of stupidity and hubris! My trains (when the school's been open) have been fine for the last few weeks, and given British Rail's previous tendency to fail due to such unlikely events as 'autumn' this is definite progress.

That said, I'm trying to get back to the north tomorrow, so I might be back with grumblings if that doesn't work out.

It happened last year! Granted, this is a bit more prolonged, but I remember at least 6 or 7 days last year where my bank didn't open because the employees were afraid to leave the house. The snow wasn't even up to my ankles!

Kudos to the British Rail, though. I'm pleasantly shocked.

I am home two hours early from work today on account of the weather.

In a normal year, this town gets 2-3" of rain. For the entire year. In two days worth of rain, we've reached 1.31" and counting, with a whole day left in rain watch. Our roads are flooded -some out of the city-proper are closed- as are the parking lots to many of our schools/offices. The army base is on Emergency...something or other status.

It was both tragically funny and sad to explain to our snowbirds that us seeing 12+ hours of continuous rain is something many of us have never seen here; I certainly haven't, having lived here for the better part of 18 years (however, in Tucson, this is quite normal, especially during Monsoon months). We've certainly had days that were overcast for at least that long, but if it rains, it tends to do so for 1-20 minutes and at most, an hour or two if it's a good rain.



ETA: the 1.31" figure was from 2PM; we're now at 2.06" and on tornado watch until 10 tonight.

I'm turning into a total wimp. Two years away from the northern plains, and I'm becoming a wimp. It's not that I complain about the cold, I really don't. (I have people who keep saying that they cannot possibly be expected to walk outside or go anywhere at all in this cold, cold weather. I give them absolutely no sympathy on that topic.)

But, damnit, I'm tired of winter. It's been sooooo long. I want it to be oooooovvvvverr already.

Even though I know, really, that this isn't winter. All the same.
