210$ and nothing to buy...

210$ and nothing to buy...

Postby BonitoDeMadrid » Sat Dec 06, 2008 12:29 pm

So, I recently acquired 210 dollars.
This Christmas, my father is coming to New York, so I asked him to shop for me (using the acquired money) over there, so that we can skip delivery, the insecurities about shopping online and the rest of that. (He said yes).
The problem: I don't know what to buy.
Can you give me advice?

In general, I would like something electronic- a music player of sort would be lovely, but other things are fine. (If it connects to the TV, though, we can't shop for it at the U.S. because it'll be Region 1 and I live in Region 2). I was considering purchasing an Ipod Touch second generation (I don't want to need a software upgrade), but I can't seem to find any under 210$. (220$ is fine, too.)
Thanks for any advice!

Region settings are a software thing, not a hardware thing, I thought. I can certainly hook my region 1 laptop up to a British TV, anyway. The only trouble is the voltage conversion, which requires a special gizmo or it will overload.

On an unrelated note, someone figured out the price difference between the UK and US of some variety of the Adobe Suite was so great that it was cheaper to fly to New York, stay the night, buy it, and fly back then to get it on the high street here.

That seem a little silly to anyone else?

Region 1, region 2, etc are DVD region codes. You're probably referring to the difference between PAL and NTSC. You could just get an NTSC-to-PAL converter in addition to whatever device you buy, if you wanted; a quick googling showed one place selling it for around $30.

Yeah, that's the one. Thanks for correcting me.

Though now things that connect to the TV are even less possible, since I gotta buy the converter as well- and I don't think I have enough money for both.

I'm sure this is not the most exciting answer, but you could consider simply NOT spending the money in favor of saving it for a time when you actually need something, or at least when you discover something you really want.

It takes me forever to decide to buy something because i'm such a big fan of saving. I don't' know, it's exciting to me to see my savings go up...

I thought of that, but I figured out I would make much better use of my 210$ by spending them, rather than changing them into my currency (and 210$ in my currency is nice, but not enough for big things later on) or keeping them as 210$ (since I don't have any use for dollars other than shopping with them).

I would, but my computer isn't really fit for running games- in terms of graphics cards, sounds and whatnot, and also the only gaming console I have is a PS2 with no NTSC-to-PAL converter- so both PS3/Xbox 360/Wii games or PS2 games are out of the question.

Plus, I don't think I'll play Left4Dead. I hate horror in all of its fashions.

If you have a DS, all the games are non-region. So you could get DS games...and if you don't have a DS, I recommend using the money on that :D And get The World Ends With You, one of the FF games (I have III, IV, and Tactics. Tactics is really cool), Chrono Trigger..the Sonic RPG is fun...I just love RPG games.

Ah, Twinny. Me, too. If I hadn't been so good about saving before, I'd be in a serious world of hurt right now. I used to get such a thrill out of updating my spreadsheet on my savings account.

Ah, but Left 4 Dead is so much fun.

There is no feeling quite like playing the Tank on the Rooftop Finale and sending a survivor flying off the roof with one swipe of your arm. Makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside. :)
Yeah I got a response............er..WHAT?

I stand by what I say. Plus, I probably won't be able to run it on my computer anyways -_-

Then spend the money on upgrading it

You can get stuff really cheap in some places, and since it's online it doesn't matter what currency it is!

Did you not read his first post? He doesn't like shopping online.

I think you should donate it to the Poor Wives of Masters Students and Mothers of Adorable Daughters Fund of Canada. It totally exists. Just deposit your money to my paypal account and I'll make sure it gets to them.
