Mac Question

Postby Rei » Thu Oct 09, 2008 8:47 pm

So with the recent demise of my hard drive, I had to get a new one. The repair centre dealt with that for me and installed OSX and all that jazz. However there's just one small problem... they named the computer "test". And from what I can tell that's impossible to change. Somebody please tell me that's not the case and enlighten me on how to fix that?

Go to System Preferences then Sharing. You can change the computer name at the top of the pane.

System Preferences > Sharing

There's a box at the top for your computer's name. Click the edit button to set the name of the computer as it will appear to others on the network.

If you want the hard drive icon on the desktop to have your computer's name, click in the name field and change it or right click, select get info and change it there.

Okay, but if I go to Finder, under Places there is "Desktop" "test" "Applications" and "Documents". Is there any way to change that place?

Oh, that's your Home folder (and, I presume, your account user name.)

Go to System Preferences, then Accounts. Under "My Accounts" on the left, control-click your account (presumably, "test") and select Advanced Options.

The exact inner workings of that screen are unknown to me (any BSD gurus want to comment?) but I'd assume you can change your username and home folder without causing any undue damage (but please don't take my word for it, and please back up your data first). Changing the home folder and/or username should change the Home Folder entry in your Places sidebar.

I have an external going and have been backing up my computer ever since the hard drive went.

If you're using Time Machine, then you should be good to go. Time Machine automatically does a full-disk incremental backup every hour.
