Wait... so those special few get an extra chance at points? :( Doesn't seem very fair.
I was going to jokingly/semi-seriously say they aren't special but it would sound wrong, while still being technically true. I guess I went and said it, though, eh?

Top of page 6 of that thread, about two weeks ago, I asked for people to make sure I had active email addresses. I don't need them this week but I will next. A quick thumbs up post, a PM, an IM, any would have sufficed.

The five people who got to start on the first question are the people who gave a thumbs up-PM-IM. I know it's super easy to assume I have everyone's email address but I hardly ever use e-mail addresses for Pwebbers, so I asked to be sure. As it is, I will now have to ask people who stopped playing but who I still need them for because I simply never had them in the first place.

Unfair of me? I don't know. It's certainly possible.
Hrmph. I read that post as "everyone who I've asked already, make sure I have a valid email address". It seemed like a message to people who already knew what you were talking about - aka the "participants" - similar the those who were "participants" in the picture challenge.

Nevermind, it's just a game.

Carry on.

You know how in Alvin Maker, everyone has a knack? Apparently, mine is the subtle art of making no sense to 99% of the population.

And I repeat the above.

If it makes you feel at all better, I've been trying to think of (fair) ways to stack the deck against a certain, frustratingly knowledgeable person for the last month. Kind of doesn't work when you think most of the stuff up too far in advance of knowing said person's weakness and adding it in after the fact would be unfair.

If that does nothing for you, I <3 you (really!).

If that still does nothing for you, I was declared Jerk of the Week/Month.

If that still does nothing for you, if I must admit it, yes, it's only a game. :)

Today, by crazy random happenstance, I found out that Miyazaki's studio (although not him, directly) is doing an anime version of The Borrowers.

So that's... interesting.

Dudes! Apparently there was an earthquake of some sort in the greater Toronto area! I didn't feel it though. :(
...And now tornadoes?!

Yeah, but still!

Earthquakes (and tornadoes) in Ontario?! WTF? We're only equipped for blizzards.

Yeah, what's with that? We leave Ontario for BC, and look who gets the earthquake!

Syphon the Sun, I know that you're not really a criminal law person, but I was wondering if you know something.

See, I have someone telling me that if you see a person assaulting, lets say an old lady, in the street - and you jump in and attack the attacker in her defense you can get charged with assault.

I know this probably varies from state to state but what are the general laws in concern with that? Like aren't there Good Samaritan laws?

a sizable majority of my faculty and a sizable minority of students at my grad department later on identified as GLBT
I didn't want to distract from Confessions, so I'm posting here: Is this just a trait of grad school everywhere? This was really my experience, too. (Okay, I've not gone to grad school... but I've taken graduate classes! and my friends are all phd students! and I'm an HONOURARY grad student!)

Could it just be the universities that you attended/know? My university is very pro gay rights, so even in the undergraduate population, there was a sizable minority(maybe majority?) that were GLBT. So I imagine the grad school would have a similar breakdown, but I'm not sure if that is true of grad schools everywhere.

I don't necessarily think so. I'm pretty sure the clinical department across the street had a very different breakdown. It's that a couple of professors when I started there had research interests in GLBT issues, and that ended up attracting students who had similar research interests, and often that means some investment in the community/issues. And, then, when they hire replacement faculty, again, it's known as a very gay-friendly department in an area with a culture that is, if not gay-friendly, at least very, "mind your own business and don't embarrass or harrass people." So, over time, it just worked out that way. Whether there's a higher proportion of GLBT folks in universities/grad schools than in the general population, I couldn't say -- I'm sure there's some research on that, somewhere.

I just don't have the energy to read his reviews anymore. I get tired of the snide remarks about left-wingers being put into reviews of all movies, tv shows, chocolate bars, tool kits, deodorants, vegetables, etc., etc., etc. There is nothing on earth that cannot be used as a kickoff to a rant about the left-wing PC liberal bias propaganda global warming apologists. Or, if not that, then a touchstone for a sermon on the beauty of conservative family values and candidates. It gets old.

I have this crazy need to see Power Rangers, from when Tommy was still the green ranger and kind of evil until he turned into the white ranger.

Tommy was only evil for the first five episodes he appeared in, the Green Ranger cycle. then he became a regular character, iirc.

He didn't become the white angel until he was resurrected and they went to the 'new' zords.

The best prevention from West Nile virus and dengue fever is to avoid mosquito bites by remaining indoors, preferably under two or more layers of mosquito netting.

I don't know any impartial networks, but lets put that in context.
Here's why: It's so incompetently programmed that it continues to show the news items from the day that I loaded the gadget onto my iGoogle page. CNN and the New York Times update automatically; FoxNews doesn't.

Besides, even when I do remove and then reinstall the FoxNews gadget, the news they cover is all "soft" news -- scandals, car chases, missing people. Not a breath of genuine news. When I looked at the headlines I realized: FoxNews on the air might be "fair and balanced," but it's still a Rupert Murdoch-owned news outlet. Always aiming at the lowest common denominator.

And they're probably right: That's what most Americans seem to want to watch. But not me. I didn't watch the O.J. Simpson trial. I switched away from the endless coverage of not finding that girl who was (probably) murdered on a Caribbean vacation after the first minute, which contained all the actual information that they then spent a thousand hours repeating and talking about.

So FoxNews doesn't update itself on iGoogle, and when I update it manually, it's not worth reading -- to me, anyway.

It's a sad day when Ted Turner and the Times are the best source of quick-headline news. Next thing you know, I'll start believing in global warming.
These are all more or less accurate statements. Also, despite being what most people would consider to be an environmentalist, I'm perfectly okay with him not believing in global warming, since the phrase is largely incorrect anyway. And Fox News may not be balanced, but it's no more right wing than CNN is left wing. The problem, as with all the major news outlets, is that it's incredibly unintellectual (which is exactly what OSC is saying).
"But the conversation of the mind was truer than any language, and they knew each other better than they ever could have by use of mere sight and touch."

I failed the cracker challenge. I just know this says something deep and meaningful about who I am as a person, I just know it.

Okay, not really. I'm surprised at how much harder it was than I thought it would be, though.

And there will be no attempts on the cinnamon challenge; that just looks gross.
