I need to re-read That Hideous Strength. That is the one that I struggled to get through and never understood. Now that I have a better grasp of the planetary figures and the trilogy as a whole it should be easier to get through.

That Hideous Strength was probably my favorite, largely because of the tie-in to Arthurian legend, and I actually wrote a comparison of Out of the Silent Planet and H.G. Wells' First Men in the Moon for my final project in AP English a year and a half ago. Perelandra just never really "clicked" with me. I "got" the (fairly blatant) parallels to the Fall and the temptation of Eve, but I had a hard time paying attention to the debating between Ransom and Weston which made up a pretty significant part of the book.

Weird. I use Xmarks to sync mine between my various OSes (all of whom use Firefox).I've developed the weird habit recently of dragging interesting links to my desktop instead of bookmarking them.

In learning the Bayley's Scale of Infant Development, I found out that I have not, in fact reached all of my developmental milestones. This is because I use a "quadrupod" grasp of my pen rather than a "dynamic" grasp.
This, frankly, PISSES me off. Particularly since four year olds can apparently do it.
Oh, and because my handwriting is actually really good in spite of the fact that I "never learned" to hold my pencil.
Seriously. I was a little on the oppositional defiant side about this. They'd give me grips, and I'd move my hand around them. Or remove them. Or slide them further up the pencil. f*** the tripod dynamic pencil grip and the elitists who espouse it.

According to this, the "quadrupod" grasp is a functional grasp pattern. At least you're functional as opposed to immature or inefficient!

Good to know.
Actually, with standard-size pens, apparently I have an "inefficient" thumb wrap grasp. However, with the kick-ass gel-grip pen I use, it can pass for quadrupod.

Honestly, I never realized there were so many ways to hold a pencil. I don't even remember being taught how to hold a pencil or anyone trying to correct my habits. Either way, I have the "tripod grasp with open web space" and a hooked wrist.
I just tried several of the others and they're mostly really uncomfortable for me. But if it's comfortable for you and your writing doesn't suffer as a result, I don't see any reason you shouldn't hold the pencil whichever way you'd like.
On a related note, I've never used "home row" typing and really only use my right pinky to hit the "Shift" key. But it works for me, I've been typing like this for years, and I don't plan on changing any time soon.

Perhaps that's why my handwriting has always been awful...
I trade between a tripod with a closed web and the thumb wrap grasps. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only lefty doing the closed web thing, but I never did get the hooked wrist thing. I always found handwriting to be so painful for my hands and wrists that I wouldn't dare that awkward looking method.
Unrelated confession: My day to day life consists primarily of fumbling around in the dark. Can someone please turn on the lights in here?

Hmm... none of those are mine. I rest the pen on my ring finger and don't use my thumb at all.
Maybe I'll have to take a picture of my weirdo grasp. I never get a writers bump, but I do get hand cramps from writing too long.

This is almost making me curious enough to go looking for that Lefties thread we had, to see how many of you there are here. I don't remember there being quite so many of you.
ETA: Looking at that, I'm closest to Tripod grasp with open web space but unless I'm misreading it, I'm not quite there. My ring finger and pinky don't rest in my palm; they stay curled beside the middle and the ring, respectively. The middle finger has a writing callous.

Hmm, at first I thought I didn't see my grip on there, but reading the text for the tripod grasps made it sound more like what I do. But in the picture, it looks like the pencil/pen is at the tip of the middle finger, not on the side.
I'm a bit like that, but it rests between the minor knuckles of the middle finger; I don't really see that on there.
I also have "horrible" handwriting. But I can read my own, and have trouble reading some "good" handwriting, so feh.

Unless I use my middle name, you can't make an anagram that doesn't use my last name as a noun.

I share that sentiment. I've been self conscious about my own unorthodox pen holding style all my life! I've actually taken the time to practice so that I can at least sign my name neatly with the tradition "tripod" grip.

Today at work, I was invited out by a man to this church service and was relaying the story to my supervisor, commenting that I must look like a heathen.
My supervisor then told me this story about an experience he had when he was in college. "This really hot woman..." he starts off but at that point, my mind kind of did a put-the-brakes-on thing because I had to try very hard to keep following the story.
For some reason, it was completely strange and unsettling to hear a 50something year old man use the word hot. It was even weirder to have it coming from my supervisor and not just because he is my supervisor.
Then it occurred to me, that word has always been an awful lot like "panties" to me. Sure, it's perfectly acceptable and not even all that bad but I'll still be hesitant to ever use it with a straight face.
Dollhouse-random-comment with potential ***SPOILERS***:
I've seen Ballard shirtless (not too shabby, I'd say) but the sexiest he's ever been to me was in last week's episode when he was fully clothed, hugging Victor-as-Kiki and asked if the people looking on had a problem with it.
And the actor who plays Victor is basically the best actor on that show. Amazingly believable to me as all of his characters.
[/potential spoilers]

I've never found Ballard sexy, but I loved that moment too, Alea! I love Victor, and I love Sierra - I always find her believable too. Far more than Echo, who never really slips into her roles properly.

Really? Really? That's awesome. It's nice to know there are other freaks out there. This picture makes me very happy. I didn't think anyone in the world held a pen like I do. I guess this makes two of us. Maybe there are others out there.

Hey, can anyone suggest a good proxy? The Southpark website, in what I can only assume is an insult directed solely at myself, has stopped allowing their episodes to be streamed from Ireland, which sucks, so I need to fool them into believing I'm in the US. Being able to watch Daily Show clips again would also be happy-making.
