I had no idea the insanity that is the Royal Canadian Mint.

The world of numismatics is a strange one.

But I want a dinosaur quarter.

I don't really get how they can legally charge $30.00 for $0.25. Anyone want to explain that? Is it the case/encapsulation that you're "really" paying for?

That being said, I'm totally sad these won't be in regular circulation. The poppy coins were pretty dang cool.

I was asked, by an Indian (of Asia, not a Native American), if I was Indian.

He then asked if I was a student, likely because of my backpack, and seemed intrigued that I'd be in that suburb, all the way away from Chicago. Clearly I radiate a longing to be in the city.

Then he kind of followed me to a seat on the train.

And that interaction was over.

Yeah. There was no point to it. Randomness!

I have a name for this: "awkward public transit friends". They're the best. Actually, I call them "awkward bus friends", but that's only because we don't have trains around here except for Amtrak and freight.

Subway Boyfriends! You could have lots of other Subway Relationships, too, but mostly in New York I had Subway Boyfriends. Wow, I miss the city.

I'm approaching 1500 posts a lot more rapidly than I approached 1000. Probably because I am making more random posts like this. It took me 5 years to reach 1000...

It smelled like wet zoo for the first mile of my walk home tonight.

Then it smelled like fresh laundry.

Rei got me a pocket knife for Christmas. I've never had one before, and never felt the lack. I've been vaguely amused for years at their constant presence in Rei's life. Never really objected, but I just didn't need one myself.

Now I find more and more reasons to be glad I have a cutting tool on hand, and whenever I leave it at home there's always something that needs cutting. I like my knife, and I am glad to have it.

Is it just a single blade, or a multitool? Either way Rei is darn right, but this is a serious difference.

I should have specified, I asked for it for Christmas. I don't know what struck me, but it seemed like a good gift idea.

It's an "opinel" knife, pretty much the only kind of locking blade allowed in England (we speculate because the locking mechanism is manual, rather than automatic). Just a straight-up folding knife. I was impressed at how sharp it was right out of the box.

Knife safety is something Nom-nom is going to learn from a very early age.

Has Rachel McAdams been an artist in every chick flick she's been in?

I wonder. Actually, I have no idea.

But thinking about it, a disproportionate number of women in "chick flicks" are in artsy jobs. Even when they're executives, they're not at the head of, say, a mining corporation. I guess it would be less romantic?

Or just plain artsy and also depicted as (somewhat negatively) crazy and the men in their life just can't handle the complications brought on by this exuberance...

At least, that's something I've seen in a few chick flicks.

True story:

In my creative writing class we've been listening to people present their writing (I'm going Monday, nervous!!) and I was a little bored so I started drawing a picture for my friend who sits next to me. The guy sitting next to me passed me a note that said "Are you drawing a liger?" I wanted to die of laughter because I totally was. I told him yes and he said it was awesome :D

So, I've handed in my two week notice and any desire to do anything even potentially resembling work has left my body. The next two weeks are going to be SO SLOW.

Even though we can't really afford it, THIS is going to be our mini-vacation this summer. Vermont Bed and Breakfast! Treasure Hunt! Prizes! I better get in shape. Ten to fifteen miles of hiking in two days. :)

I learned a new word last night at work: nuggetting.

It's been happening a lot this past week because the high schoolers had finals and overran the library to study for them (we give them free food, see...it's our fault for encouraging their presence).

What I Didn't Miss When I Was 20+ lbs Heavier

Cat calls and strange men following me (to my car, subway stop, around the grocery store, whatever).

It is 8:00 in the morning on a busy residential street. I am walking to my car so I can get to work, and yes, my ass does look fine in this skirt, thanks!

How's that one-liner working for you, a******? No woman in the history of EVER has ever been cat called on the street, turned around, smiled brightly and said, "You know what, I WOULD like you to 'give it to me' right now. Hang on a sec while I remove my clothing."

I don't understand people like that and I don't think I want to. I feel wierd enough when it only seems like I'm following someone because we're both going in the same direction.

I can't say it has ever happened to me, anywhere, at any weight. I think I would take it as a compliment if it did, only because it never has. :)

A parking lot attendent called me gorgeous and said I brightened his day when I walked past yesterday. I decided to take it as a compliment, as it was much more polite than any catcall ever is.

Also, I clicked on this video in the end screen of the cat video. It started out Meh, then became surprisingly hilarious, and finished on a rather disturbing note.

I love mondogreens.

Been listening to the new Fiona Apple album incessantly (it's wonderful) and one of my favorite songs on it is "Hot Knife" which includes the lyrics:

If I'm butter, If I'm butter
If I'm butter then he's a hot knife
He makes my heart a cinemascope...

But I keep hearing:

If I'm butter, If I'm butter
If I'm butter then he's a hot knife
He makes my heart a cinnamon toast...
you snooze, you lose
well I have snozzed and lost
I'm pushing through

so fascinating and
I'll slug it out
I'm sick of waiting
and I can
