There's something irksome about people complaining about a decresing bonus when they're only paying $2 a ride for one of the most advanced subway systems in the world, but for the life of me I can't quite put my finger on why.
NYC Subway? Advanced?

BAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA! Sorry, but no. NYC Subway may be one of the largest in the world, but it's sub-par in nearly every other respect.

I'll take WMATA (Washington DC), SF Bart, London Underground, Paris RATP or Tokyo Metro over NYC Subway any day of the week.

NYC Subway doesn't even have centralized signaling, ferchrissakes.

I was paying $137.50 a month for my bus fare, before I moved across town (technically, to another city. Only not really). Now it's $14 for 10 trips.

I can see how it would be annoying only getting 3/4 of a trip... frustrating, that!!

'Least you guys HAVE subways. We need to rely on the stupid bus roads that change once per month, god knows why.

I dunno, in many ways I prefer the buses in Illinois to the DC metro. But maybe that's because I can ride the former for free. Maybe.

I prefer the MTA to the public transportation I've taken anywhere else, actually.

Ditto.

Plus, you've got to think about scale. Every time I look at a DC subway map I laugh. It's so ridiculously puny.

Don't you think this city is almost TOO large, though? My boyfriend and I live over an hour apart and yet...we're still in the same city.

Now this place has grown on me bucketloads, honestly. I'm coming up on my FOURTH summer in NYC, which is actually sort of insane and terrifying. But I do have one serious cautionary note for those who may be considering a move to the Big Apple.

Fall in New York City is absolutely fantastic.
Winter in New York City is actually surprisingly romantic.
Spring in New York City is delicious.
Summer in New York City sucks.

It's SO hot and crowded and sticky and the subway stations could DROWN you in filth and humidity and although at least 80% of the subway cars have working AC, the people IN the subway cars are red-faced and sweaty and apparently half of the New York population has never discovered deodorant. Everyone's outside "enjoying" the smell of baking trash on the concrete so the side-walks are HELL to navigate.

AND HAVE I MENTIONED THE BLACKOUTS?

Queens lost power for TWO WEEKS in the summer of 2006. Nya-nya, ooo in 2003 Manhattan lost power for three whole days, well, CRY ME A FREAKING RIVER. Have you ever got without electricity for two whole weeks? Not just your apartment, but ALL apartments, all grocery stores, all restaurants, all EVERYTHING?! No charging your phone, no computer, no AC, no fans, no television, no charging your ipod, NO NOTHING. My boss has been stuck at her home in Jersey for the last three days cause they haven't got any power and she can't get her car out of the electric garage!

I'm telling you. NYC is swell 9 months out of the year, but for your own sake invest in a damn summer home!
you snooze, you lose
well I have snozzed and lost
I'm pushing through
I'll disregard the cost
I hear the bells
so fascinating and
I'll slug it out
I'm sick of waiting
and I can
hear the bells are
ringing joyful and triumphant

Agreed. However, I will say that there so many lovely things that happen in the city over the summer that it almost makes up for it. Or at least makes it bearable.

Shakespeare in the Park, street fairs everywhere you turn, Summer Stage, the Mermaid parade in Coney Island, Bryant Park film screenings every Monday, free concerts weekly at Mccarren Pool, giant first Saturday museum events, and best of all, the beauty which is RESTAURANT WEEK! It just makes you happy to be alive. Or at least it does for me.

Blah. I used to live in Nigeria. Blackouts were a daily fact of life.

As long as I'm not trapped in an elevator or subway car when the power dies, I'm good.

And I live in upstate NY where all those wealthy city people own said summer/weekend homes. We don't like them so much.

Haha, I don't much blame you; I don't like them when they're here, either.

After seeing the Incredible Hulk last night, New York is getting worse then Tokyo for monster attacks.

How'd you like the movie, JL?

I'm an Edward Norton fan so I plan on seeing it ASAP if I can.

It was better then I expected. It was definitely better then the Hulk move a few years ago. I liked Edward Norton quite a bit in it, though him and Liv Tyler don't really have any chemistry onscreen, which was too bad.
