I've been getting into some chiller music lately. Here's what I'm probably gonna grab today:

Bon Iver's album For Emma, Forever Ago

Devotchka's latest album: A Mad and Faithful Telling

The two Nick Drake CDs I don't have. I just watched a good documentary in parts on youtube, and I can't help but get into Nick Drake more now.

An album by a group called She & Him which is two musicians (M. Ward and some great female musician I can't remember the name of). They have some good originals and do good covers.

What are you gonna get next?

There are stores with music? I thought it just came magically from online.

I'm not a big music person, but I'll pick up some Jack Johnson and some Josh Ritter.

Making a pretty big assumption there. I have never bought music in my life. I don't own any music, and I probably never will. I'm not much of a music man -- I'm fine just listening to the radio.

last album I bought was the new Dolly Parton Backwoods Barbie. which I'd give a 4 out of 5. some outstanding tracks on that, The Lonesomes, Cologne and Shinola (as in you don't know s*** from). Last album I bought on itunes was Loretta Lynn's greatest hits which is probably one of the best albums I ever bought, damn that girl had an ear for turning a phrase, no wonder Jack White is such a fan.

right now i'm enamored with classic folk and folk-rock.

i've been listening to donovan and loudon wainwright III and don mclean and so on and so forth. so i'm trolling for some of that online with plans of purchase.

in a very mellow state of mind this week i guess.

I just "bought" (but am still downloading) about 700 mb of Dire Straits. They seemed to be lacking from my library.

I'm really excited for Laura Marling's cd to come out in the US. If you like female singer-songwriters and have never heard of her, you really should check it out. Sincere, beautifully-written, clever tracks which are both addicting and completely un-annoying and non-poppy... which appears to be a really difficult line to walk. So yeah, that'll probably be next.

The last thing I bought on iTunes was Yael Naim's first album. She's a French-Israeli sort of gypsy-rock (is that even a genre?) kind of vocalist. If you've seen the new Macbook Air commercial, you've heard her single, New Soul.

I highly recommend Carbon Leaf, and their best album "Indian Summer", although "Love, Loss, Hope, Repeat" is a great one, too (and not just because of the awesome album art). They're a kind of folk-ish indie band with Celtic roots. Maybe someone who understand genre better would be able to describe them better.

Dire Straits. They seemed to be lacking from my library.

I just did the same thing! I realized the only Mark Knopfler I had in my library was from the Princess Bride soundtrack.

I need new music so badly, but I'm very picky. And I'm not even picky in a specific way--there are just some bands that I like, and some that I don't. I haven't figured out what seperates the two.

Hmm. I guess I'd like to get more Math the Band. Uh...Counting Crows are supposed to have a new album out eventually. That's about all I can think of right now.

Ah...I remember falling off my bike while singing Mellow Yellow when I was about 6 or 7. And Don McLean was my first concert at about 10. Good stuff.

My mother says she went to a Don Mclean concert on some Christmas Eve back in the day. He played for about twenty minutes and decided since it was Christmas Eve he was done for the night. She has held a grudge ever since. I can't blame her. But I can't blame him either. Siiiiiick story though.

Okay, I take that back. I've bought a total of three CDs in my life, for myself. Jason Webley "Only Just Beginning" and "The Cost of Living" and Gatsbys American Dream's self-titled album.

Speaking of which, you should try some Jason Webley. He's a folk singer who half the time is singing nonsense songs and the other half about the apocalypse (the second song on his list). Hilarious guy, nicest guy I've ever met. In fact, I shall now share a story:

Webley had a concert in Boise last summer, which I, of course, was going to, and my friends from Spokane/Moscow decided they were going to come, too. It was at some bar, but it was an all-ages concert, so we were good to go. My friends were running late, so I went there to meet them. I paid to get in, and was told that all underage would have to leave in half-an-hour. Naturally, I was upset, and I soon found out that Webley was, too (all of his concerts are all-age). Apparently there had been some miscommunication, so he played a few songs, and then, at the proper time, announced he would be going onto the street to play for those who couldn't stay.

My friends showed up just in time for the first song on the street, and he played about seven more. I know it's not that unusual for someone who used to be a busker, but it was so cool. We got a picture that we definitely wouldn't have had without this odd bit of bad/good luck.

So, the moral of the story, I suppose, is to be a fan of friendly people, and not put too much faith in old 70's singers.
