Young Val: What is your writing background?
Ratesjul: Same question.

Between the two of you, I don't know if I have ever seen more beautiful writing. I am fairly certain I have said that to both of you, but...
I don't really have a writing background. I failed english the last year I took it at high school, and only took one english paper at university - and that was about speaking.
I started writing poetry about halfway through high school. I don't remember when I started writing fiction that wasn't thinly disguised bad fanfiction - possibly the first year or two of high school.
I've written several novels for NaNoWriMo in the last few years.

*shrugs*

Mostly I suppose my writing comes from reading a lot.

A question I just thought of: Does anybody else here (other than me) live outside of the U.S. (or Canada, for that matter; We can just call it "Western Hemisphere" and "Eastern Hemisphere", for that matter)? If so, where do you live?

Open question to anyone:
What's your highest level of education and do you see yourself getting more? (for those still in HS - are you going to University?)
Graduate Diploma of Business Studies - majoring in Finance (this is actually an undergraduate diploma)
Bachelor of Business Studies - majoring in Accountancy
Post Graduate Diploma in Professional Accounting.

Ee-ah kwai, or something close to that. It's three syllables, and it's actually two words: "ea" and "quae". When I was new to the Internets I didn't think they'd let me get away with three words in a name, so I went with two.
You mean to tell me I've been mispronouncing your name for past six years?

Goddammit.

JL, can I ask the story behind the duck?

Don't ask me to point, to it, but someone made a comment on it some time ago that made me think there was more to it than meets the eye.

Story behind the duck... hmm.... I wish we had old pweb so I could search the exact story, because it's somewhat fuzzy.

Basically, I like duckies. I used to have a duckie on top of my computer monitor, so it was associated with being online. If I recall correctly, on pweb, it started with me throwing duckies at people - specifically Limegiver. He would hit me with a whiffle bat, I would throw duckies, etc. At some point it became my avatar.
At a different point I joined the Canadian Alliance, and my duck got turned into the Canaduck, and I photoshopped the maple leaf onto it.
Now, the Canaduck is a symbol for me, and if I change my avatar, there will be much outrage (even though right now I really, really want to change it to the girl in the Penny Arcade strip that I posted in the Web Comics thread).

Also, I came up with the "one duck to rule them all" because I think it's funny, and because it makes Janelle jealous.

I was wondering from all of you, are you highschoolers, college students, or grads (if so what do you do). Also does anyone know what that logo in the top left of the screen is?

That is one crazy looking person.

I believe you are missing some options there...

I'm in college, but have been in high school and middle school while being a pwebber, at various times.
Also does anyone know what that logo in the top left of the screen is?
If I recall correctly, it's from a piece of artwork by the husband of Amka, the site admin. It was put up there when this incarnation of the board was set up, I assume because it was just because it's an image she had handy. Supposedly it's going to be replaced with a less confusing logo we voted on... any day now...

I am getting into this a little late....
How did you find this site?
I found this site in college, before I read EG, from Oliver. I was intrigued as to what he did and talked about on this site for so long. I did not join till I read EG and then I finished the series shortly after that. I still think the the Ender's series is the best. :)
What about names?
It should be obvious; but I created this name after my second read through the Ender Series since I just liked this character. I liked how he watches everything and I also liked how he could go back and review past events. I really need to reread that series again. :)

I'm a high schooler, to my dismay (say what you want, but as long as you're still in puberty, or everyone around you is- life is annoying).

Nobody knows what it is; there have been talks about replacing it, and they even found a substitute, but, you know...bearaucracy and stuff. Anyway, it needs to be changed.

Oh, now i don't feel as out of place still being in highschool, seeing that quite a few people joined then or before.

For the new logo we should find a picture of something relevant (a dragon for instance).

We had a design contest and chose a new, relevant banner a few months months ago, AM. But it was rather futile since the only time the admin even acknowledges that the board exists anymore is when it's down and she's required to get it back up and running again.

I joined Pweb in 8th grade. And I'm going to be senior in high school come August. Holy cheese--have I been a member that long?

And the weird freaky chick in the logo reminds me of the Matrix.

I think I'm one of the top 10 oldest regulars here, if not top 5. Anyway, I was well out of school when I joined pweb...23 then, 31 now.

Okay, here's a question that came to me today, as I was folding laundry: for those of you with the youngish kids (I'm assuming any with old-ish ones have already answered "no" to this), when they become mature enough for you to introduce them to Ender's Game, would you then introduce them to P-Web, should they take interest?

Didn't Ela introduce her kids (JaneX and... shlomo, I think?) to this place? Or did that happen the other way around?

I joined pweb in 2002, right after graduating with my B.A. I took a year off from college, and then went right back in and am about a year off from finishing my Ph.D. in Counseling Psych.

Good lands, a lot has changed since I first joined. Pretty well all for the better.

[edit to add]

I'm not a parent, but my little brother is 12 years younger than I am, and I did indeed introduce him to Ender's game. And I did not introduce him to this site and rather hoped he wouldn't find it on his own. Probably I'd do the same with kids.

I wish I could claim credit for that one.

It is from Episode 25, named "17 Seconds," of Grey's Anatomy...a tv show I've never watched. I don't even remember how I found the quote. I think I was doing a lyric search.

Meredith: You don't get to call me a whore. When I met you, I thought I had found the person that I was going to spend the rest of my life with. I was done. So all the boys and all the bars and all the obvious daddy issues, who cared, because I was done. You left me. You chose Addison. I'm all glued back together now. I make no apologies for how I chose to repair what you broke. You don't get to call me a whore.

I'm glad Jan asked where it was from because it was driving me crazy, but not crazy enough for me to remember to ask when we talk.

I watch the show and thought that was where it was from, but knew you didn't watch the show.

I have questions...

Everyone:
How did you find this site?

What novel turned you on to the Bean/Enderverse?

What about that novel did you like?

How old were you when you read that novel?

Did it mean something to you the first time you read it? or did it take a few reads?

If you read EG first did you read EShadow or Speaker next?
1. Orson made mention of it in one of his books.
2. Ender's Game
3. I liked the concept, the characters, and pretty much everything else about the novel.
4. 18--Specifically my aunt introduced it to me, but I didn't read it until my prom date recommended it to me.
5. It meant something to me then. And more each time I reread it.
6. Ender's Game, Speaker, Ender's Shadow, Xenocide, Children of the Mind, Shadow of the Hegemon, Shadow Puppets, Shadow of the Giant, First Meetings (and I have, but haven't read the War of Gifts or Gift of Wars or whatever it's called.)
