Title: Shadow Zebra

Dr Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog!

Postby Yebra » Sat Mar 29, 2008 9:42 am

A musical about a low-rent super-villain? That sounds pretty good right?
A Musical released on the internet? Well, that sweetens the deal.
What if this musical was also Joss Whedon associated? Well, that would just be TOO AWESOME FOR WORDS.

It's got Neil Patrick Harris as Dr Horrible, Nathan Fillion as Captain Hammer (the hero who keeps beating him up) and Felicia Day as Penny, the cute girl from the laundromat he's too shy to talk to.

If you'll excuse me, I'll be over there being pathetically happy about this.

First ACT is out. It is made of win. Win and awesome. Sadly, nobody I chat with on the interblogs seem to care about it. So I told them to all f*** off.

This appeared as a moral dilemma, because at first it was weird though I swore to eliminate the worst of the plague that devoured humanity, it's true I was vague on the how so how can it be that you.. have shown me the light. It's a brand new day, and the sun is high! All the birds are singing that you're gonna die! How I hesitated now I wonder why... it's a brand new day!

Also, Act II is out.

I've been singing the Bad Horse song since it came out.

"So make the Bad Horse gleeful or he'll make you his mare" - best line ever.

Yeah, still not sure about the ending, but really, that was amazing. The second act is easily my favorite, for the opening and closing songs, and for the best line in the entire... show?...(very)mini-series? ...thing: "The hammer is my penis"

*Spoilers and ramblings follow*

Ok. I've loved Buffy, Firefly, How I Met your Mother and The Guild. This project had my dream team. And I really wasn't disappointed. I've been singing the freeze ray and bad horse songs all week.

But now it's over. The first time round I was very ambivalent about Act III because I wasn't expecting a Whedonian ending. I wanted a happy musical with songs and supervillians and cheesy superheros and pretty redheads. I would have gone away quite happy with that. It should really have been obvious from early on that anything where the villain is the hero is unlikely to have a happy ending (in fact, ruling the world and penny's love were always mutually exclusive goals, but there still could have been happy redemption in there...maybe). Also you know, it's Joss. He hates us.

The role reversal stuff was fun (The villain is the one with the double life, the hero is always in costume, who's dressed in white and who's dressed all in black and so on). It all made sense going back to the beginning when I twigged that this was an origin story - it was how the Evil Dr Horrible, red-garbed villain went down that road. It's how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader - without knowing that was going to happen. You've spent years reading the stories knowing that the great rivalry between Captain Hammer and Dr Horrible began when the Doc killed the girl Hammer loved. Then you see this and find out "that's not how I remember it".

He puts on his new costume and he's the Doc we've known for years, taking his rightful place at the evil league of evil. I'm going to bring back the Darth Vader analogue, his decent into evil concludes when he puts on the suit and is cut off from his humanity. The doctor puts the goggles on, and no one sees the tears. In the sense that it's a very interesting, wonderfully musical and sad back story for a evil character (in a world where it happens there were no stories first) that'd make you see another side to him, it's brilliant. As my happy fluffy musical, less so. But I will always have the freeze ray song (which might have lured me into a false sense of security).

The only vaguely negative thing I can say is that it was a little strange that Penny only really existed as someone who's perfection spurred the other very flawed characters into action and the superhero's perfect girlfriend who's fated to die is a bit of a trope, it would have been nice to see a bit more subversion of that. But really there's only so much I can ask for in forty minutes. And you know, for free. I'm so buying the DVD for that musical commentary.

Also: Bad Horse really is a horse :-D And Moist trying to open that jar remains one of those brilliant little touches that littered the thing.

I think the abruptness of the ending was the only thing that really surprised me; I watched the credits, convinced there was something else that was going to be shown (besides that awesome little mummy).

I agree. It's Whedon; I so should have expected it.

I actually teared up at the ending! That said, I love, love, love it.
you snooze, you lose
well I have snozzed and lost
I'm pushing through
I'll disregard the cost
I hear the bells
so fascinating and
I'll slug it out
I'm sick of waiting
and I can
hear the bells are
ringing joyful and triumphant
