Happy Easter, everyone!

I am already back from the Vigil mass, so it is already Easter for me! The lights are on, the candles are lit, the Exultet is sung! The bells are ringing and the banner unfurled!

Exultet!
Rejoice, heavenly powers! Sing, choirs of angels!
Exult, all creation around God's throne!
Jesus Christ, our King, is risen!
Sound the trumpet of salvation!

Rejoice, O earth, in shining splendor,
radiant in the brightness of your King!
Christ has conquered! Glory fills you!
Darkness vanishes for ever!

Rejoice, O Mother Church! Exult in glory!
The risen Savior shines upon you!
Let this place resound with joy,
echoing the mighty song of all God's people!

My dearest friends,
standing with me in this holy light,
join me in asking God for mercy,

that he may give his unworthy minister
grace to sing his Easter praises.

Deacon: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Deacon: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them up to the Lord.
Deacon: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is truly right
that with full hearts and minds and voices
we should praise the unseen God, the all-powerful Father,
and his only Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

For Christ has ransomed us with his blood,
and paid for us the price of Adam's sin to our eternal Father!

This is our passover feast,
when Christ, the true Lamb, is slain,
whose blood consecrates the homes of all believers.

This is the night
when first you saved our fathers:
you freed the people of Israel from their slavery
and led them dry-shod through the sea.

This is the night
when the pillar of fire destroyed the darkness of sin!

This is the night
when Christians everywhere,
washed clean of sin and freed from all defilement,
are restored to grace and grow together in holiness.

This is the night
when Jesus Christ broke the chains of death
and rose triumphant from the grave.

What good would life have been to us,
had Christ not come as our Redeemer?
Father, how wonderful your care for us!
How boundless your merciful love!
To ransom a slave you gave away your Son.

O happy fault,
O necessary sin of Adam,
which gained for us so great a Redeemer!

Most blessed of all nights,
chosen by God to see Christ rising from the dead!

Of this night scripture says:
"The night will be as clear as day:
it will become my light, my joy."

The power of this holy night dispels all evil,
washes guilt away, restores lost innocence,
brings mourners joy;
it casts out hatred, brings us peace,
and humbles earthly pride.

Night truly blessed when heaven is wedded to earth
and man is reconciled with God!

Therefore, heavenly Father,
in the joy of this night,
receive our evening sacrifice of praise,
your Church's solemn offering.

Accept this Easter candle,
a flame divided but undimmed,
a pillar of fire that glows to the honor of God.

(For it is fed by the melting wax,
which the mother bee brought forth
to make this precious candle.)

Let it mingle with the lights of heaven
and continue bravely burning
to dispel the darkness of this night!

May the Morning Star which never sets
find this flame still burning:
Christ, that Morning Star,
who came back from the dead,
and shed his peaceful light on all mankind,
your Son, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Amen.

As I wrote in my confession post, I love LOVE LOVE Easter time. I'm excited to go to the Easter Vigil in a couple hours.

Paul and I spent a bunch of time at the church today blowing up (by helium tank) tons of balloons for tomorrow's service. I love giving them to the kids. Balloons are great.

I've never had balloons at a service before. Probably too difficult to mix with lit candles everywhere! But last year we had banners unfurled during the Gloria, and the congregation had all brought bells, and there was a bonfire to light the Vigil candle from... it was so wonderful.

I think this is my favourite time of year, bar none. Even better than Christmas!

Oh, no. Candles tonight, balloons tomorrow morning. Candles and balloons seriously don't mix.

My church does sunrise service. We all sit outside before the sun comes up, and the sermon is getting to the finish just as the sun rises over the top of Baker mountain.

Then we eat.

All of your services sound great!

I've been talking to Tyler a lot about Easter and Jesus lately, and holy cow, does that kid crack me up! For example:

- When he saw the statue of Jesus at the LDS Denver Temple, he noticed there was a half-wall of glass around Him and said "Jesus is trapped!"

- He told me that Jesus needed new batteries (because He died)!

- When asked what Jesus did in the Garden of Gethsemane, he replied "planted flowers!"

- When we were finishing up telling the crucifixion/resurrection story on Monday night, he suddenly yelled out "Don't nail me, Jesus!"

Oh, the fun of teaching your 2 1/2 year old about Easter. But more importantly, the JOY of teaching your 2 1/2 year old about his Savior. It's been one of the great experiences of my life to begin to help him understand the greatest sacrifice that was ever made, and that it was made for him.

Happy Easter, everyone. Christ is Risen.

Hee, that is very cute, steph.

I am still amazed at Easter which for years was important, but never quite so gripping as it has been these past two years. This Vigil marks one year for me being part of the Catholic Church, however hard that is for me to imagine.

I was sitting outside thinking "Was it a morning like this?"

When I was keeping the 2-4's in the nursery last year, and one of them asked why we have a holiday, and I said "because Jesus died and came back to life." She said, "Didn't He do that last year?"

I started humming "O Holy Night" today. Completely out of season, too. I do hope I can be forgiven. There's just something wrong about Christmas carols on easter.

Too bad it's the best Christmas carol, or more of that ol' Catholic guilt would be piling on.

S'ok, most of the time Handel's Messiah gets sung at Christmas time when it's really about Easter time.

I went and downloaded some of the classic Gregorian music for the season. I will happily listen to the Pange Lingua, the Stabat Mater, and the Exultet all year round, and I'm bitterly disappointed if they aren't intoned during the Triduum.

I was a touch amused to hear two priests at different parishes say tri-dum this year, as opposed to tri-du-um.

I did not enter this topic to start a rousing debate about easter or christianity. I understand now that my reply may have been out of place but i feel that it could have been corrected through a pm. but i do not understand why a simple misjudgment on my part is cause for such an irrational response over such a trivial error. I can see the need for organizing your forum and i respect that, but there are far more civil ways of dealing with wayward posters.

That remains to be seen.

Besides, you have to remember that forum posts, like email, are toneless. I don't know who it was addressed to, so the fact that I interpreted it one way reflects badly on you, even if you didn't intend it that way. You have to be ready for all interpretations of what you write.

Anyway... if you truly didn't mean that to be addressed to me, I forgive you. If.

Easter was awesome, but long.
Night before, neighbors decided to throw a huge party. They kept me awake til 3.
Then, choir and handbells performed in both services. We sang Antiphonal Praise and For God So Loved The World in the early service, and Antiphonal Praise and In Christ Alone in the second service. The version that goes "In Christ Alone My hope is found, He is my rock, my strength my song..." Good song.
The bells played "Joyful joyful" in both services.
Great day.
Oh. I was also Lay Leader, so I got to read John 20:1-18.

I'll confess, I'm a bit bewildered at having two different, Easter-related sets of lyrics for the same tune. One set begins "Christ the Lord is risen today / Alleluia" (well, the alleluia is considerably longer, but yeah); and the other set begins "Jesus Christ is risen today / Alleluia". If the rest of the song were that similar, I could manage to follow along without the words right in front of me, probably, but the page number was not mentioned and the words really quite diverged from there.
