I've wanted to start working out in the morning for some time now, but my apartment is not good at stopping noise from the living reaching the bedroom where the girlfriend is still sleeping. Thankfully, she is leaving next week for Taiwan, giving me two months of being as loud as I want in the morning.

My plan is to alternate body weight circuits with Zombies, Run! (Assuming it actually turns out to be fun. I haven't tried it, yet...) every other morning.

It should be an enjoyable experiment.

I've been hearing about the Zombies, Run! app everywhere, lately!

I am so interested in giving it a shot, except for the fact that I LOATHE running.

Ok, I totally caved and bought Zombies, Run!

Have to put together the perfect playlist and start this thing tonight!

I tried to do the Couch to 5k thing and didn't mind the running but had to give up because it hurt my knees too much (they are prone to problems). So, now I just do very fast walking, either outside or on the treadmill.

I think it's time I dug my bike out of mothballs (I think it's in my parents' garage), plotted a course and started doing something that resembles real exercise. I should probably also start paying attention to what I eat and stop eating so much crap. I'm approaching 270 again when I should be somewhere around 230-240 and even that would be on the heavy side of healthy for my height.

Zombies, Run! is awesome!

Here I am, about to go pick up supplies for my little township, at risk of becoming Zombie food.

And at the completion of Mission One. Zombies cannot withstand the power of my scrunch face.

Having a carefully crafted playlist is essential to getting the most out of this app. But I absolutely recommend it. I seriously cannot wait for my next run, so I can find out what happens next.

Maaaaaan. I've heard many awesome things about that app, and it makes me wish that I had a "real" Droid and not just a Kindle Fire, with no stupid GPS.

Terribly adorable scrunch face. Run fast, cuz if you turn into a zombie I will be sad. And you would lose scrunch face.abilities.

Anyone know if it works with an iPod touch? It lists it as supported on the iTunes page, but does it not require the GPS?

You only "need" the GPS to run the Zombie Chase feature, which is optional (though sort of the point).

I've heard that now there's also a way to turn on Zombie Chase mode using Accelerator mode, so that people can use the app on treadmills. But I'm assuming the iTouch doesn't have that, either.

You'll still be able to listen to the story, pick up items, do the missions, etc, but there won't be any randomized zombie chases (aka interval training); just the stuff that's included in the existing story.

Do you just hold your phone while you run? Or use an armband or something? Maybe I'll wait until I get an iphone to do this...I haven't yet attempted to put music on my droid, since I use itunes usually.

These pants have pockets, but I've got an Amazon tab open to research arm bands at this very moment!

I would really like to see Spotify integration added to this app. I listen to music on my Incredible daily, but have no idea how to actually put music files on it. I was hoping to keep it that way.

Starting Zombies, Run! Tomorrow, as soon as I figure out how to put music on my phone.

TRIPLE POST!

A: I need new shoes. These ones tore up my heels.

B: I'm really out of shape in the cardio department. I made it 4/5ths of a mile in almost 12 minutes, at which point I got bored because

C: For some reason, Zombies, Run! didn't think there was any music in my playlist. There definitely was. I will need to fix this...

ETA: My first tiny run. You'll note a walk in the middle, and again at the end where I gave up and walked do to lack of music. I've set the bar nice and low for my next attempt.

The heat is killing my workout routines. We do not have air conditioning (aside from an ancient window unit in the bedroom that doesn't work properly, and there's no room for me to exercise in there even if it did). Lifting weights and doing push ups and just otherwise exerting myself in the heat of my living room is brutal. And running outdoors in the afternoon is just crazy. So although I miss Sam Yao desperately, Zombies, Run! is out of the question.

My new scale says I am four pounds heavier than my previous scale, and I am trying really, really, really hard not to care about that at all, but privately, it's sort of devastating. Made worse by the fact that I was just going to drop into a new 10lb range, before, and now feel like I have to regain that ground all over again. I know it's only four pounds, and it's not like I suddenly gained weight, rather my weight is just now being reported more accurately. But ugh. It sucks.

Time to join a gym. Can't let the heat get me down.

Bah. I really need new shoes.

I've altered my morning cycle slightly:

Today: Zombies, Run!
Tomorrow: Body weight workout.
Thursday: Write.
Friday: Repeat.

I went to my second Zumba class Monday night (I happened to be busy every Monday since the last one) and I was barely sore afterwards! It was still wicked hard and I sweat like crazy but I didn't feel like I had been beat up the next day. I'm taking this as a good sign.

Bit the bullet and joined a gym (LA Fitness, to be exact).

The gym is shiny and large and expensive and AIR CONDITIONED. With a classroom, free weights, weight machines, and a ton of cardio machines, plus a pool, and racquetball and basketball courts. Whoa.

I have a complimentary assessment with a personal trainer on Monday, and my first time going to the gym is tonight. If I get over there early enough (depending on how long it takes to run my errands) I'll join the hip hop class tonight, and if not, then it's Zombies, Run! on the treadmill.

The heat will no longer be an excuse. Woo!

Shiny racquetball courts. Whoa.
All of the racquetball courts I've found here are the opposite of shiny. It's most upsetting.

LA fitness is our gym. :) I rather like the treadmills that have an interval setting, a lot easier to switch from walk to run speeds with a single preset button.

I just did my second day of free weights, deadlift, press and chinups. Chinups are more difficult with a wedding ring on--ouch. Shooting for five days exercise this week. First week back was two days, last week was four days, this week will be five days. I stuck to walking for exercise the first two weeks (but it is amazing how much of a workout you can get by walking for an hour and increasing the incline every five minutes), so it's nice to get back to more variety (2 or 3 days of free weights, alternating with walking inclines (and maybe an occasional sprint during the walk).

Bought my first pair of real running shoes! I have to say, they make a HUGE difference. I was wearing clunky old cross trainers before. Not great.

I didn't have time to go to the Hip Hop class last night (though I peeked in and it looked fun!), so I ran on the treadmill with Zombies, Run! Although I had the accelerometer and the Zombie Chase feature turned on, I didn't get mobbed at all, so I can't weigh in yet on whether that feature works as well as the GPS or not.

For those interested in my on-going emotional attachments to these characters, still in love with Sam Yao like whoa. Runner 7 is smug. Runner 8 is a bitch. Also, I miss the radio guys.

I'm suddenly using the money I was going to spend on new shoes to take a trip to Minneapolis next weekend...

I should probably buy new shoes this weekend, regardless.

The new shoes are great. The 85% humidity I just ran in was detrimental.

I finally finished the first episode of Zombies, Run! I experienced a moment of true terror in the final segment. Oh, God. ... It's her... It's the previous Runner 5. ... She's still got here headset on. My near exhaustion did amplified my terror several fold.

I was not expecting that. A pleasant surprise.

So...my left armpit lymph node aches when I really exercise (zumba class). Never any other time. Anyone else ever experience this or just a random weird body thing?

Any of you kids doing the GoRuck by chance? On my list of conquests today. All my CrossFit people are doing it in October and trying to drag me along.

I see a number of CrossFitters on here...what's your preferred WOD?

So I have been taking a parkour class in LA for the past 3-4 months. I have to say I enjoy them very much. It's hard! and I have hurt myself in strange ways (not knowing it was possible to hurt there) and I am very excited by what I can do with my body now. I am not at the level to do flips and tricks, but then again, that's not parkour.

Wow. Impressive.

(I had to look it up. If you had asked me before what parkour was, I would have guessed a board game, similar to backgammon. No idea where I got that idea.)

Everything you need to know about Parkour can be found in an episode of The Office haha

I have never heard of this zombie running app, I hate zombies but I also hate running so maybe the two together will be more fun!

I haven't really dedicated myself to trying to start up with running again but I tried doing just the .3 mile to the library to drop off a book and while my legs were perfectly fine and could have kept going, my lungs, oh holy crap my lungs, were not having any more. Which has always been my downfall with running; my legs are pretty awesome but my lungs suck.

I have tried to up my walking these past two or so weeks, though, to help counter the effects of stupid BC making me gain weight.

I'm having external? internal? rotation issues with my right shoulder. Some muscular imbalance of sorts with my right lat? rotater cuff? or whatever. Seems to be some knot of muscle making it slightly uncomfortable to widen my right shoulder into proper posture. Had the problem during the summer, took 3 months to figure out how to fix it - may need to stop working out my back/delts?/lats? for a week or so, to get rid of the muscle. And then build it back up. We'll see how it goes.

May be related to my left arm being two inches longer than my right.

In other news: So far this semester, I've had at least two different people mistake me for an actual college athlete. Random people actually. "So, do you play basketball?" "Hey, you're that Lacrosse player" All when I'm getting food at my school cafeteria, after I workout(in my wifebeater). Please, please don't feed my ego...I'm just barely keeping it in check.

EDIT: Back to my Stats homework that I'm procrastinating finishing.

I'm gearing up for my first 5K in October.

http://www.colormerad.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I've been running by myself for a while, but this will be the first time I've done an organized group run. It'll be interesting to see if I can actually run the entire thing, 3 miles is just about my limit right now. Either way, it looks like this one will be fun, though, and my girlfriend and a bunch of other friends are doing it as well. I'm sure there will be pictures afterwards :D

So, in the lead up to the wedding and the many months after, I basically dropped my workout routine and all my good habits. Packed on a few pounds, though didn't regain everything I'd lost, or even close. Still, the gain is upsetting and I'm back at it.

Took a hip hop class at the gym on Thursday. And went back to the gym today to reunite with Zombies, Run! For those interested, Mission 9 is the most depressing mission ever, oh my god.

Still in love with Sam Yao.

Going to a zumba class tonight. First one in four months. If I write it here, I'll have to do it.
