Free Antivirus Software?

Postby Wind Swept » Thu Feb 28, 2008 6:04 pm

So, I went ahead and installed XP on my Mac. Does anyone know of a good, free antivirus application?

Without the question mark and the username, this thread would so be spam.

AVG has always been good to me, and it tends to score much higher in comparison rankings than most commercial ones (Norton, McAfee, etc.).

I've also never had a problem with Avast, though the actual software looks kind of like a cheap computer game from the late 90s.

Free web-based virus scan: housecall.trendmicro.com works right from the website and completely free. does everything, sweeps for viruses, spyware, malware, grayware. And deletes it all too. once a week works great for me.

I second wigginboy... except that I don't do it once a week. It's been multiple years since I've had a virus and since I've had to use that online scanner, but when I did have to use it it's worked great.

I use AVG too, with great satisfaction. I complete it with Spybot: Search and Destroy and AdAware to be protected from web threats. This protection should be completed with Firefox + AdBlock + NoScript add-ons.

Clamwinis good if you want a free one that isn't based on the internet. It doesn't run in real time on it's own but if you connect it to Winpoochit can.

Thanks, guys. I'm giving AVG a whirl, along with jota's add-on suggestions.

I do the same as jotabe. All free versions and have never had a virus.

Well, my husband works as a network/computer tech and he does the virus scans on a regular basis so I'm not too worried.

yeah, AVG is pretty damned good. Ad Aware is also nice. you can always look up others at www.majorgeeks.com which I use whenever I need to fix all the problems on may parents/sisters computers.
