NOTICE: I couldn't find a "new members" board

Postby Warmaker » Wed Jan 30, 2008 1:50 am

Hello, I am Andy. I enjoy the Enders Game and Enders Shadow series and the internets, so I joined this lovely site. Actually, I'm reading Xenocide right now and I decided Warmaker would be a rad SN. I love good books, good music, good movies, fun people, and assorted video games. I also dabble in creative writings including songwriting, short fiction, and poetry.
80% rad, 20% kick-ass, 10% win. I give 110% to being awesome.

Welcome to Pweb. Have some limeade on behalf of the Canadian Alliance.

This is the right place to post "I'm new" threads, so you're fine there. You also used the words "internets", "rad", and you called this site lovely, so you should fit in fine.

My only mark against you thus far is that you claim to actually enjoy the Shadow series. Since you said you're reading Xenocide, have you already read all of the Shadow books and are working your way through the Speaker series?

Edit: Actually, now I see you're also posting in really old threads. That's a bit frowned upon unless you really have a reason to do it.

Welcome Andy,

I suggest you check out the FAQ thread that is sitckied at the tope of this forum.

You should be okay digging up old topics if you have something to add, especially in the forums outside of Milagre as they are far less active.

I know there are threads about most of your interests.
There is a movie review thread
There is a "books you are currently reading" thread
There is a "music you are currentyl listening to" thread
There is a poetry thread
I am almost positive that there is a writing critique thread, were you can post some of your work and members will give you some feed back
I'm sure there are some gamers among us as well.

You should be able to find most of these threads by doing a little searching or I may post the links here for you if work stays this slow.

Well, most of what I said was intended to be overly opinionated from my point of view. But point taken; not everyone minds. This may have been an irritation I was given by visiting some other places. Here it's not a big deal, but I've been rudely reprimanded elsewhere for it.

Really, though, you don't mind if people bump dozens of 3rd-page posts with "I agree"?

Edit: I may have sounded a bit strong, though, in retrospect. A post with relevant content is always welcome, no matter where the thread is.

That is an extreme example, but is annoying. I think that is perfectly fine to bump an old thread if you got something to say about the topic. Forums have a funny way of contradicting themselves on this rule though. I've been to forums where people will go into to new threads and be like "Dude there is already a thread about this topic. *post linky*", even though the old topic is over 2 years old. Conversely, I have also been places where you get yelled at for bumping old topics even if you have something worth while to say. So, I don't think there is really a rule of thumb to go by, but as long as they are contributing to the discussion, I don't see a problem with it.

On Pweb 2.0, oldbies were forever yelling at newbies for posting new threads with links to threads from years before. That drove me absolutely bonkers (both the proliferation of threads, and the attitude of, "Why didn't you find our old thread on page 34?") My experience with this particular community is that people as a whole tend to get far more annoyed by having duplicate threads than having old threads bumped.

Obviously, whether you're posting in an old thread or making a new thread, people will like it more if you have something to say, that's just a given. Personally, though, I'd rather have an old thread that has a lot of good conversation in it that I'd forgotten about and conversational strands we can re-pick up bumped by someone saying "I agree" than a new thread created for the topic that's already been discussed and argued to death and having to start the whole argument over. *shrugs*

I have to say, I am super impressed with these forums and the people here. Considering the content of the inspiration for this forum, I should have expected this, but the community here is way more intelligent than any other forum I have been a part of, while not being overwhelmingly elitist and exclusive.

Warmaker,

You are definitely right about the intelligence. A lot of very smart folks on these boards. Elitist?? Hmmm, maybe a little bit. But it used to be far worse. But we are a tight knit community here and if you mess with it, you will probably feel the wrath of the oldies. But once you're in, you're always in.

That's very true. We may be a little suspicious of newbies, and they get a bit more ribbing than others, but eventually the newbies become regular faces and will be defended like anyone else.

Eri,

I said once you're in, you're in. And by in, I mean not being considered a "noob". Some one who was in would not post in every single thread in the game room, just to be...hmm...well, just to be whatever you're trying to be. Because I don't really see what you were trying to acomplish with that one.

Well, you're sorta blending in with stereotypical rebellious youths.

Okay, so I guess this where I introduce myself.

I'm Helen, and I like Ender's Game. A friend of me showed me Ender's Shadow a few weeks ago, and since I finished it I've been totally hooked. I'm most of the way through Ender's Game, and I decided to look around for information on the internet, and this was the first place I found. It looks fascinating.
