The addictions thread
I didn't find this anywhere across the board, so...
You got any addictions? Confessions about them? Need help getting rid of that addiction? Tell us all about it.
For starters, I am addicted to diet coke. And that addiction is, in a way, actually good for me, because each time I get even a 1/8 of a chance to be addicted to something else that is really, really addicting (like tobacco, coffee, etc.), I can tell myself "you're already addicted to coke, you don't want to be dependant on more things..." and that ends the conversation between me and myself.
So, addicted and willing to tell about it?

Who controls the British crown? Who keeps the metric system down?
We do! We do!
Who leaves Atlantis off the maps? Who keeps the Martians under wraps?
We do! We do!
Who holds back the electric car? Who makes Steve Gutenberg a star?
We do! We do!
Who robs cavefish of their sight? Who rigs every Oscar night?
We do, we do!

I was most definitely addicted to cigarettes--but I've been cigarette-free for 329 days now (quit completely cold turkey).
I used to be addicted to biting my nails. I've had more stop-and-start success with that one, although currently my nails are long, which means I haven't bitten them in awhile.
I'm currently, always have been, and most likely always will be addicted to chapstick, and am applying it pretty much incessantly.
...apparently I have an oral fixation.

you snooze, you lose
well I have snozzed and lost
I'm pushing through
I'll disregard the cost
I hear the bells
so fascinating and
I'll slug it out
I'm sick of waiting
and I can
hear the bells are
ringing joyful and triumphant

Cloves primarily. But I'm not against other substitutes.
I've got a pretty addictive personality though, and can be very impressionable (not so much as I used to be), but I can wield it in good ways as well as bad.

Picking. The skin around my fingernails as well as my scalp. I'm trying to accept the fact that I'll never stop but a small part of me keeps thinking maybe I can. Even though I don't remember a time that I didn't do it. Ah well, could be worse.

My brain! Oh sweet God, my brain hurts!
I took a full month off coffee once. No coffee at all. The first three weeks were BRUTAL.

Even as I read this I'm pressing a tissue against the huge tear in my thumb from where I ripped my cuticle clean down past my nailbed. If you find a way to stop, let me know.Picking. Also, in other news, I gave in. I am right now drinking a grande half-caff. I am a weak, sad, pathetic shell of a man.

I've been a nail biter for pretty much as long as I've had teeth. I've never tried to stop, and I have no intention of ever doing so. I see no reason to. People say that it's unsanitary, but I only do it when my hands are clean. People also that it makes your nails look ugly, but I do it well enough that mine actually look neatly groomed after I bite them.
My only other addiction is lurking and posting on certain forums.

I used to chew my nails. Now I pick at them & under them till they tear off.
Also, facebook is a fast-growing addiction.
My coffee-issues wax and wane. I'm mostly a social drinker these days.

Now that I don't bite, I do pick at teh skin around my fingers. Especially when it's dry in the winter! Ouch.

I guess I'm in good company. There are many fancy names for skin picking. Psychogenic excoriation, dermatillomania, psychodermotosis...
And Mich, skin biting is called dermatophagia.

I am definitely addicted to caffiene. I consume a lot of it, and if I go without for 18-ish hours, I start to get a headache. Unlike most people, I don't use it to keep me alert or wake me up or anything (in fact I feel none of those effects, I sleep right after coke easily), it's just a major component of Coke and I love my coke. Still, it's probably not good...
You could say I'm also addicted to pot. That may be a too PG-13 topic for here, but let's suffice to say that I don't sleep without it.
I'm not proud of either, moreso the pot than the caffiene. But, I fail to see any negative impacts on my life by them at this point, so I have no reason to stop.

Webcomics, possibly. Or, well, "stories" in general, in a sense; I just think the comic medium expresses things best, and print comics in syndication tend to suck for reasons the creators cannot control; so webcomics are most prevalent form that I see this happen. People may not see this as bad, but I get way, way too into them sometimes*. I thought this was transient, but I'm becoming less sure. If I didn't consciously curb this, I'd probably be checking over a hundred comics daily by now.
* EG is not an example of this, although it is probably the story I am most "in to" as of now. It's just a good story I enjoy experiencing, and even talking about with other people. Some others, though.... I can feel the lure of an unhealthy level of escapism, and it quite honestly scares me sometimes.

zero, have you ever heard of The Comics Curmudgeon? Makes the daily comics much, much funnier.

I'm another nail bitter, i've been doing since I can remember and I don't really see myself stopping.
Other then that my biggest addictions are coffee and dr. pepper. There are some mornings where it's just so cold I HAVE to have a cup of coffee, even if I make it myself. I just crave dr. pepper pretty much 24/7.

I'm also a skin picker. However, I also have eczema really badly, so the two do not mix well together. Needless to say, you'll often see in long pants, despite hot weather.
